It doesn't require a persistent online connection, not as in every single minute the console is powered on, to play SP games. So if you lose your connection for a few minutes or even a few hours, your game will still play.

BUT it does need to be logged in 24 hours from the last time it was online. Any longer than 24 hours offline, then the issues occur.
