At least out of all the ones I've played, and I've played your Thiefs, your MGS's and your Splinter Cells. One game kills them all and all others when it comes to stealth and that game is...

...

...

...

...

...

COUNTER-STRIKE

Yes, it's true. There's nothing like the stealth you can employ in this game, when it's say just 1 v 1 but it can manifest itself at any moment. That's one thing about CS that's often forgoten - how amazingly well the footstep sounds affected the gameplay. It's much more "real" than other stealth games, too, because you're holding the walk button and have to painstakingly slowly check your corners, etc. This results in many a genuinely tense, stealth-driven, gameplay scenarios.

If you disagree, you've never played CS.

I can't see that myself, but I always thought that Manhunt raised the bar.

Nope. In splinter cell your enemies are stupid NPCs. In CS youre going against other players also using stealth, resulting in far more dynamic gameplay. Sorry, CS hands down.

It's harder, too. In Splinter Cell you also have a third person view, allowing you to pretty much check behind all corners with ease. CS all you have is first person view, so you don't have eyes behind your back and above. This makes a massive difference.

*shrugs* truth be told I havent played the multiplayer so I couldnt say. As far as the single player goes, it's another story. You don't win by "default" either.

I've not really played too many stealth games but i must say MGS4 for pretty good for it's stealth, though i know it's not the best the stealth action in Uncharted 2 was really fun.

Counter-Strike is a shooter. Is Half Life 2 a racing game because it has vehicle sections in it?

Thief: The Dark Project and Thief II: The Metal Age are the best available stealth games... since they were designed to be played in a stealthily manner and reward the use of avoidance, trickery and patience.

Stealth is my favorite genre. Octo-Camo in MGS4 was my favorite stealth mechanic ever. Thief on PC was excellent back in the day, but I think Oblivion actually did a decent job with that style of creeping too. And if you want to surprise people with an FPS that used stealth well, nothing beats Modern Warfare. The Guillie suit is the best thing to ever happen to an online sniper ever. Just hide, pull out the pistol, cap a dude with an SMG and you become a lethal pile of leaves that can camp his way to glory. So yeah... I disagree. Respectfully.

Either MGS1 on the PS1 or Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow on the Xbox. Playing that online on XBL (before they screwed it up with Double Agent) was amazing. The 2 spies vs 2 mercs gameplay was perfect.

I don't know why Deadly Shadows is available almost everywhere (including Gametap) but the two excellent games aren't even available on GOG.com.

Splinter cell 3: chaos theory hands down.

Major_Reeves

I second that.

Not only did it have great solo-play, it had stealth co-op as well as versus... in my eyes, one of the more innovative interpretations of stealth multiplayer starting with Pandora Tomrrow. Simply awesome.

I think the original Tenchu, the first 3D stealth game ever made, was slightly more influential, but I share your love for thief.

MGS4 of course. It's stealth elements are completely unmatched and miles ahead of the competition. 10.0 speaks for itself.
