Poll SOCOM PS5 in development for a while, according to new rumor (29 votes)

Will be true 62%
Not happening 38%

https://www.dualshockers.com/socom-ps5-rumor/

One leaker who recently outed the upcoming State of Play live stream for August 6 ahead of time has gone on to suggest that SOCOM is set to return with a new iteration on PS5. While this reveal for SOCOM wouldn’t happen during this State of Play presentation specifically (Sony has already made clear that the show is focused on PS4 title primarily), the leaker in question goes as far to suggest that this series revival has been in the works for quite some time and could even launch in proximity to the PlayStation 5 itself.

What do you think, SW? True or not true? I am inclined to believe that a new SOCOM is in the works and will bring Sony's lackluster multiplayer back to glory!

Who would the developer be?

The only way this works is if they make it a true tactical shooter. No interest in another 3rd party CoD clone. I mean something taking it more in the direction of Operation Flashpoint. I have interest if they go that route, with a competent dev. Hell, even the last gen Operation Flashpoints weren't terrible - even though they seem to get alot of hate. Maybe they can get some of those devs and give them an AAA budget.

Last gen Sony ruined the franchise. 1st by pawning it off to an incompetent developer, who made a broken "online only" game. Then, Zipper took it back and set an unfortunately low bar. Technically did an OK job (just in terms of optimization and how it ran technically on PS3). But it was a very dumbed down game and not SOCOM and not tactical. Basically a 3rd party CoD - arcade shooter.

If so, who’s making it? The only studio that seems in play to make a game of that sort is GG, especially given their hiring patterns in the past few years.

It also didnt help that Socom 4, a game with its primary selling point being multiplayer, released smack in the middle of the 2011 PSN network data breach, where PSN was down for 3 weeks.

i think sony is dividing up there teams even more because the ps5 is easier than the ps4 to develop for. meaning it is faster to create a triangle as mark put it in the deep dive. i mean look at Insomniac Games making spiderman and ratchet and clank and rumored resistance with mark. even Guerrilla Games is working on socom and hzd2 if rumors are correct. then bluepoint working on demon souls and rumored to be working on something else like legacy of kain remake or something else. then you have uncharted being done by a unknown team which i believe are the group of people that left naughty dog during last of us 2 development.

I'm thinking Guerilla Games, year or so ago they were linked with working with Rainbow Six Seige devs on something. Killzone wouldn't necessarily make sense to be working with rb6 devs.....Socom would be more likely project...

They gotta get rid of the noob aim assist, socom 4 had on ps3, socom 1/2/3 had no gay aim assist in the multiplayer and it needs to continue to be that way.

The image is what I previously said that was gonna happen. And for the most part it’s correct and will be proven more so in the next couple of weeks. A tear down will come not too long after the State of Play, at max 2 weeks. The price will be revealed and preorders will be available this month. Now I’m allowed to give some more information. There will be more announcement in a couple of weeks. I’m not Sure if it will be a dedicated PlayStation event Or if it will be associated with the GamesCOM opening night live. But, more is coming. Sony still has a big multiplayer game coming close to the launch of the PS5. Some other tidbits I know is

– a slight hardware revision/upgrade.

– the major third party deals that Sony has secured. Such as locked off content exclusively for Sony that will definitely stir up some controversy. One in which that will be revealed in a couple days.

– the detailing/revision of Its services that will come soon such as PlayStation Now and Ps Plus.

-( I hid the secret Sony game somewhere in the text.)

I’ll be in touch

here is more proof there is a secret inside this text on what game it is. i underlined the secret code lol. notice the capital letters.

Man... I have to say true since I want it to be so bad... easily my favorite shooter franchise of all time, and it isn't even relatively close.. I need that SOCRACK back baby. I mean Rogue Company IS scratching that itch for now, but the rumors about a new SOCOM are EVERYWHERE. Also they are saying like 5 different studios are working on the game and it's supposed to take the gameplay back to its roots.

God this has to be real... :(

I mention SOCOM in about a quarter of the posts I make.. lmao.. I feel like Ghost in that aspect towards Doom or some shit... lol

SOCOM is supposed to be a launch window game that directly competes with Halo. It all sounds like it adds up and SONY DID say they wanted to push multiplayer a lot more next gen.

The problem is... I've been excited 50 other times about a "new SOCOM" and they never panned out to be true.. sigh. However, one of the most plausible sources DID say that many new SOCOM games have been pitched and started development on through recent years but none made it much past the drawing board/early dev cycles.

This has to be true.. it has to be (wishes upon a shooting star)

Two biggest rumors are Guerrilla Games 2nd studio and San Diego Studios 2nd studio in collab with Bluepoint and a couple other dev teams as well. Both are confirmed to be real but no one knows either game that each is working on.

Also, Confrontation (Slant 6) was an awesome game, but it released nearly unplayable. SOCOM IV... well, we don't talk about that since I don't even consider it a SOCOM game at all. SONY forced Zippers hand on that one instead of letting them have creative freedom.

Rumor has it that the new one has graphics nearly on par with the tech demo, a fully fledged campaign, and gameplay being taken back to the roots (S1,S2). I'm more than ok with that if those rumors are true.

It was SOCOM 4. Confrontation released in 2008. SOCOM 4 released in April 2011, just a day or two before the hack forced Sony to shut down PSN. I agree that Confrontation was really good mechanically, but the bugs and crappy servers made it difficult to play.

What kind of Socom do you think it's gonna be? I can't imagine it being so different than popular mp shooters if Sony wants a better chance for market penetration in that segment.

What do you think should it be?

Should Sony take a risk/hit and be completely different against its competitors and only target a possibly minority case of hardcore socom fans, much less chances of being a wildly popular entry (CoD, Pubg, Fortnite, etc.)?

What would be your metric for success?

I'm not being combative here. I just want to hear from a Socom fan.

It was SOCOM 4. Confrontation released in 2008. SOCOM 4 released in April 2011, just a day or two before the hack forced Sony to shut down PSN. I agree that Confrontation was really good mechanically, but the bugs and crappy servers made it difficult to play.

Well right on. I know something big like that happened when Confrontation released too though, because a lot of people said screw it and stopped playing altogether. SOCOM is the only game a lot of people I know will even play.

Man I wish I could work on the title if it is true.

What it should be is SOCOM 1 and 2 type arcade feeling gameplay with strafe battles only with tighter gunplay and hit registration.

I am more than ok with a SOCOM Confrontation armor system. Light/Medium/Heavy and an encumbrance system, but give us a classic mode as well where everyone runs the same way without the options and no encumbrance (the best of both worlds since it would be a newschool/oldschool approach and would cater to everyone.. a core/hardcore if you will) I would personally play BOTH ways and they would vary very drastically.

Have to keep gun hot

No health regen

No sticky cover

Lobbies and UCRR (User created ranked rooms)

Tournaments built directly in

Clan system

YES do add a battle pass with HEAVY customization of characters, weapons, and camo. SOCOM is well known for crazy skins like the yellow rainsuit and many others. A game like SOCOM would work GREAT with all the new school systems today. Add a skin shop, etc. It's not like it wouldn't be a perfect fit since SOCOM always had a fair share of over the top skins and voice acting.

4v4, 8v8, and maybe even 16v16 rooms

Have to have Demolition, Suppression, Elimination, Escort, Extraction, Control Points, and Breach. I don't care about a larger game mode but if they DO add a FTP BR then might as well include a 32v32 mode or convoy as well.

A game like SOCOM (what you say is catering to a niche audience) would KILL IT right now. Look at popular games like Siege and Battle Royale. One life games are very big right now (again.. finally.. and SOCOM started the trend years before). Throw is a tournament scene with paid winners and it would be huge.

Hell.. I don't even care if they throw in a battle royale (to bring in even more people and a new audience). It's not like they didn't basically have the idea down with MAG. Make THAT FTP with the multiplayer sectioned off with the campaign (if there is one) like Modern Warfare.

Need to include matchmaking to similar input devices.

Add things like colored tracers, smoke, character, camos, skins, etc. to either unlock or purchase in the shop.

MUST have verbal taunts and dancing (both new and classic on both accounts). Custom taunts like the older titles would be awesome as well.

Shorter round timers than newer games

Quieter footsteps than newer games

classic time to kill without armor and weak points and critical areas w/armor.

either one hit melee kills or one to the back and two to the front

rank progression

Push to talk if not in game chat

partial world destruction and access points to blow bridges, walls, etc. (a mix of oldcshool and throw in some new school minor destruction or certain walls that can be breached outside of breach).

Build maps around a certain game mode, but don't limit it to that one mode. Have all modes that work on each map.

I'm cool with a small/large version of maps like in Confrontation.

Day and night versions of maps

add option of dynamic weather and time of day (either rooms or hosted)

must be able to shoot out lights

must have NVG's

better hostage AI (new idea) with the ability to set follow distance.

New weapon systems

no noob tubes in ranked play (includes 203's and launchers)

must have unranked respawn (for warm up)

binos

bomb must explode after planted if it reaches 0 even if being defused when it hits it.

Open lobbies with either PTT or Open mic so everyone can talk shit pre-game and after game.

Add in custom game modes (like Modern Warfare) like paintball, Sniper no cross, and knife fights. (SOCOM classic community games)

Have to G up (green up.. or ready up) room starts when over 75% readies up, but also a quick match match finder and team/friend lobby.

large focus on gunfights, CQC, and teamwork.

No revives.. UNLESS it's specific game modes or a core mode (Once again options are a good thing). I have no problem with a core mode with armor types, encumbrance, and revives (still no health regen though) and a hardcore (oldschool mode) with no armor, encumbrance, or revives. Like I hit on before, both would be awesome.

Classic maps. Of course I want the VAST majority of maps to be new, but we need Frostfire, Desert Glory, Fish Hook, Crossroads, and a few others as well. Perhaps paid or free DLC for most. IF they make the game FTP (which I'm ok with overall as long as cheaters get banned) then add new maps as FREE updates.

If you want to know more then I can keep going man. It would NOT be hard to bring SOCOM into modern times and it isn't as niche as most people think. Look at the most popular shooters right now.. all one life and tactical (to some extent) As a matter of fact it's quite simple. They don't need to chase mechanics of other games (like they did with S4) just implement some of the NON GAMEPLAY features like those mentioned above. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with skins, gun skins, tracers, colored smoke, dances, and taunts being added in a cash shop or season pass. It is NOT pay to win but also adds a lot of options for the studio to make money, keep people interested, and bring more content on a much more consistent basis.

There also has to be open weapon picking (no classes) and I would strongly prefer an in depth weapon customization (yes I know this isn't classic, but it's something that adds to immersion and gameplay.

Classic 3rd person

limit OTS

Add duck with new tilt tech in controller like 6 axis.

roll

crawl

I would prefer no perks, but it wouldn't be terrible if you had to pick a character if each one had a unique passive or something like that.

The gameplay of SOCOM is king, don't mess with that. Just put on a new coat of paint and modernize the menus and options. Those that don't like the idea of a cash shop or season pass would get over it extremely fast if the gameplay stays true to the core.

So to sum it all up.

Make it fast paced, team based, modernized (all the things I mentioned), emphasize gun battles, mix up the maps with rush/flank/and snipe lanes, keep things simple and classic as far as actual gameplay with an emphasize on strafing and precision in 3rd person with no ADS, either completely remove or minimize aim assist like 1,2, and Con, players must play with similar input devices automatically, no health regen, guns hot, taunts, dancing, all mentioned game modes, and maybe even throw in a campaign and you can forget about it..

It would absolutely KILL it these days. All the old school SOCOM vets (as they call themselves) coming back to reclaim their throne, new kids from BR's and Siege thinking they have something to prove and with the popularity of one life games again, and... well this could be HUGE.. they just need to do it right.. and MARKET IT RIGHT (bring back the AWESOME old SOCOM commercials and paid advertising!!!).. which after S4... I'm scared.. they need to rewind the gameplay and modernize everything else if they want to appease BOTH sides. If that happens then just watch the records that get broken for SONY overall. It could EASILY be the most popular online game SONY has ever released. I just hope they have the right people working on it and they know what the fans want.

I'm ready for the sweats, try hards, shit talkers, and last round tie breakers. They don't call it Socrack for nothing and now that kids today love the competitive nature of single life online experiences? This could be monumental in more ways than one. We could EASILY see tournaments featuring 50-60 year olds facing off against kids younger than teenagers.. lol.

I hope if this is true they don't screw it up... but as always, when it comes to SOCOM I'm going to sit back and wait because I've been excited many other times in the past few years and things didn't pan out.

They just need the right people working on the game who are listening to the right people. If they chase other games like they did with S4 they will fail. They MUST make gameplay the way that fans of the franchise fell in love with in the first place, and the masses will follow. Which is largely the same reason I am interested in the new Halo game because you can tell they are taking it back to its roots. THAT is what players want. Classic gameplay with NEW features. Not new gameplay and rewriting the entire system with old menus and barebones features. They got it backwards with S4. It's time to right that wrong and push egaming, tournaments, and competitive edge with the new SOCOM while keeping its integrity and also pushing the boundaries with features and options OUTSIDE of gameplay.

Man I could keep adding to this almost indefinitely. A lot of info here.. lol.

@SolidGame_basic:I wouldn't mind a new SOCOM title as long as it doesn't have a story mode like the previous one. You couldn't even use handguns in the previous game. The game was total garbage. If they do make one, I'm hoping it's more of a realistic multiplayer sim.

Isn't SOCOM a multiplayer game?

It was, but the PS3 version added in a crappy story mode. And it seemed like the developers focused more on that. Handguns didn't exist in the game. It's beyond me on why that game was even released in the first place. Not surprising that the studio shut down back then.

@WitIsWisdom: That was massive. I'm gonna have to digest that.

Thank you. So far I'm reading "do both" and me after seeing Sony making bank, they should do add both hardcore socom stuff and trendy modes.

If Sony was smart they would just buy whatever the H Hour people have been working on,then bring in their own team to polish it up. Send it out the door as a free to play game with a battle pass. Also make it a day 1 download on Playstation 5.

Not sure if true or not but SOCOM and Warhawk were my favorite PlayStation multiplayer games.. those would be good picks to lead the charge on some new online titles for PS5..

yes warhawk lasted all gen for me. its was fun and fast passed. loved the tank and binoculars. i wish they would bring it back. starhawk did not have that same affect but i liked the idea of it. them add things dropping from space like the bases. but it was sluggish compared to warhawk

blend in what made starhawk good with warhawk play style = best multiplayer game ever lol.

YES.. can't believe I forgot that. NO dual primaries.. and YES pistols are a must. I have no problem if there is an encumbrance feature to not carry a pistol and only have a primary (or no primary and only a pistol) as well though.

lol.. yeah, sorry man. SOCOM means a lot to me. Pulled me out of some bad places after returning home from Iraq and learning to cope again. Met a lot of longtime friends that I still talk to today. The community, the camaraderie, the competitiveness, the shit talking, the clutch moments... man nothing compares to SOCOM. I also loved 1 and 2 before going in but missed most of 3 (although 3 is my least favorite besides 4 anyways, so no love loss there).

Man that would be awesome. Testing has been taking place on PS4 already though and rumor has it that it may release on PS5 now instead. I invested so much time and money into that project, but that was a couple/few years back now. I hope to get to play it in full capacity at some point though, because my laptop doesn't run it well enough. I'll have my name in the credits as a backer, mod, and possibly even an employee if it reaches PlayStation though. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it will still happen but not holding my breath... that game has been through developmental hell.
