Now that the dust has settled on Breath of the Wild, how does rank among Zelda games? (3D ones mostly)

Here is my ranking, from best to weakest.

1. Ocarina of Time.

2. Breath of the Wild.

3. Wind Waker.

4. Majora's Mask.

5. Twilight Princess.

6. Skyward Sword.

To me personally, EVERY Zelda game is a 10/10, in terms of enjoyment. That's why it is my favorite series.

Breath of the Wild is a 10/10 game, but as a Zelda game, it's more like a 9.

I just can't say it's better than Ocarina of Time. Reason being, it's main dungeons.

OOT has the best and most memorable dungeons in the series, IMO. One of the reasons why, is because of how different and distinct each dungeon is from one another.

BOTW's 4 main dungeons feel too copy paste. Not enough variety. No mini bosses, and no special items. (Which is excusable for not being in the dungeons, but they are still absent from the game.) (Not talking about the Shekah Slate)

Other than the shrines, I feel like BOTW's overworld, amazing as it is, has no purpose. it's vast just because it is. The concept of the 4 Beasts could of bee done in a, lager than average, Zelda game. I get what they were trying to do, but without dungeon variety, it feels....Underwhelming. The main campaign, that is.

I think BOTW would of been perfect if it took it's overworld, and blended it with OOT's quality of dungeons, and Link between world's approach to dungeons. (Hookshot, hammer, boomarang, etc, all available to use from the start)

However, if you one of those who do not care about the dungeons, I can see why some say that this is the best game ever.

Anyway, Just my two centz. I just to see what everyone else thinks.

1 - Breath of the Wild

2 - Wind Waker

3 - Ocarina of Time

I couldn't bring myself to finish the others. Especially Skyward Sward and Twilight Princess. Those weren't very good games.

Haven't played BOTW but unless it has boating/sailing the big blue, nothing gonna beat WW for me and I'd put OOT as close second. :P

Of those I've completed:

1. Majora's Mask

2. Ocarina of Time

3. Wind Waker

4. Skyward Sword

5. Twilight Princess

I am currently playing Breath of the Wild, and it is very, very good. It could take the number 1 spot.

I feel you with the dungeons. NIntendo makes by far the best dungeons of any developer in the world. So I did miss them in Breath of the Wild. I remember thinking to myself 'oh my, and there are going to be temples in this world? Like a fire dungeon? This is going to be epic!' And the Divine Beasts were pretty epic to be fair but they weren't the deep dungeons that I loved.

Btw I was quite surprised to hear that quite a few people were kinda done with dungeons, so maybe they made the right call to kinda spread dungeon rooms all over the world instead of doing full on dungeons. But personally I did miss them. If Nintendo would never make dungeons again, then who would replace them? There's nobody in the world who could replace their dungeons. So that said, I wouldn't mind if the next Zelda would have some solid dungeons. They don't have to but I hope they will, at some point, do more dungeons.

IMO the only reason OOT gets such favorable views is because it was the first to go from an over head view to 3D. The game is good, I guess, but I wouldn't present it with the gold medal.

Right- while I do think Ocarina has the better soundtrack and better dungeons without any question, as a whole, Breath of the Wild so thoroughly outclasses Ocarina (and honestly, every other game in the series) that I struggle to see how it wouldn't be ranked at #1- unless, that is, you really cared about things that BotW isn't quite as good at. Then I could see BotW falling behind other games, yes.

And I still haven't finished Majora's Mask. Not that I don't like it, I just get distracted and taken away from it.

Breath of the Wild is the first 3D Zelda game that wasn't just a different take on OOT. OOT gets the praise because until now, it was the game that set the standard for 3D Zelda and plenty of other 3D adventure games.

This is a smart thread and allows me to assume that you're leaving out what is clearly the best Zelda (A Link to the Past) because it is to great to be beaten by any other Zelda, past or present.

Breath of the Wild is better than A Link to the Past. It's not as tightly designed throughout as Link to the Past is, but it more than compensates in other areas.

1. Breath of the Wild (thus far)

2. Majora's Mask

3. Ocarina of Time

4. Wind Waker

5. Twilight Princess

6. Skyward Sword

assuming the 3D/HD versions of each game, if they have one. i should mention that i've played WW HD but not TP HD, and i think WW HD fixes enough for it to be a better experience than the original TP, even though i don't like WW HD's artstyle change.

BotW is amazing right now.... I'd hate to compare it to the rest of the series while I'm still living in.

I think if you look at the BotW world as a whole its dungeons really stand up against the larger dungeons in previous games. Some of the puzzles are blended right into the overworld... if you are comparing to the previous games dungeon they will fall a bit short of you only look at the interior. But so many of them are a challenge just to get to... puzzles to solve just to reveal the entrance. These can be challenging enough that you are given the reward just for entering.

If you count the overworlds this game has huge puzzle areas that stack up nicely against the dungeons of old.

I'm there with you, because if one doesn't like TP, then he or she shouldn't like OoT either. The wolf causes it to have a slow beginning, but otherwise TP would probably be my favorite Zelda too, because it easily has the best dungeons (and the best sidekick) in the series.

It's creatively the laziest is usually the reason, one I'd probably agree with were it not for the part where Wind Waker sucks and Skyward Sword actively hates the idea of the player having fun. Plus pure systems are concerned Twilight Princess is refined all around better than the rest of the 3d zeldas built on Ocarina's template, as you said easily the best dungeons from an aesthetic standpoint, atmosphere standpoint, and collection of enjoyable, if nothing particularly special puzzles.

It's dungeons being linear isn't exactly much of a knock when Wind Waker is just as offensive about that, and TP's dungeons are all around better.

1) breath of the wild (i still cant decide if its my fav game ever but i certainly see it in my top 5 for a long long time.).

2) wind waker. this is my ocarina. i played OOT after this so OOTs impact is not as great

3) twilight princess. it failed to meet the ungodly hype on it but its still a dam fine game. its biggest crime was that it was a bit too much of a run of the mill zelda game. thats by no means a bad thing.

4) OOT. i can appreciate the impact when it released and why its so many peoples fav game ever. i played a fair chunk of it with the bonus disc that came with WW. its still good. but its rough to play now. i can see myself playing BOTW, WW, TP and many 2D zeldas in 10 years time. but OOT....not so much to be honest.

5) MM: 3 day limit and the clock restarts. cardinal sin...nope.

im not ranking skyward sword. that game and I are cursed. every time i sit down to play it i get distracted by something else. i only ever got as far as the second dungeon. but one day i will just sit down and play it. from what i played i would maybe rank it between OOT and MM. i liked the controls and enemy design and tactics but it seems like everything is a dungeon which im less fond of.

This is my personal favourite, if I was to rate them from a reviewers point of view, I would put BOTW at 1st place.

I don't know how I'd rank Breath of the Wild. It's an excellent game but what I like about it is what I don't really care much about in the other games and what I Really dislike about it is basically what makes Zelda my favorite video game series. I am inclined to say it should be number 2 behind Ocarina of Time but the main quest, the dungeons, and the music are just so horrible in comparison that I feel guilty saying I like it better as a Zelda game than even Wind Waker.

The problem isn't that BotW doesn't have puzzles, the problem is that Zelda has never been about puzzles in the first place. I feel like the game takes everything that zelda did but separated them individually. What made Zelda's dungeons incredible was their mix of exploration, atmosphere, great music, mini-bosses, bosses, enemies throughout, having a meaningful impact on the story and why completing that particular dugeon is important, and of course puzzles.

The dungeons in Botw just have puzzles (incredibly dull, easy, and repetitive ones) and a boss. There are "Zelda style" puzzles in the overworld that I greatly enjoyed but I could count them on one hand.

I understand what you are saying and you raise a lot of good points. I personally wouldn't call it a problem... its more of a change in philosophy. And I do agree that I would like to see more bosses in general.

That being said... I still think the seamless weaving of overworld and dungeon is done masterfully in this game. Lil things like stumbling upon the Forgotten temple filled with guardians... or trying to work a giant maze... or taking a mine cart all just to gain access, which is the goal in itself. I almost see each map section as a giant dungeon...

But thats all subjective... what is fact is that Hyrule Castle changed the game and brought it all home back to original Zelda style. The traditional Zelda stuff BotW was missing all finds a home nicely in this section of the game. The first time a door behind me closed and made me slay a room clean, even after all these hours of gameplay, was a real nice thrill.

....and also, anyone saying that the score in this game sucks clearly has not been to Hyrule Castle.

1. TP , simply because it's the only 3D Zelda I played :)

It is definitely a change in philosophy, one which I hope doesn't hold. I didn't find the transition seamless, in fact I found it quite jarring to be exploring a beautiful world and then see a shrine and then be thrust in some room with a literal puzzle in it. It was basically the opposite of seamless. They were fun, but way too easy, but they have to be. I mean were talking about a community of people that think the Water Temple is some mythical, difficult experience. But yeah, the overworld, finding-the-shrine "puzzles" are by far the best in the game.

A Link Between Worlds should count because I turn the 3d slider all the way up.

1. Ocarina of Time

2. Breath of the Wild (I'm still playing this one so it's too early for me to definitively rank it. I already know that it will be at least #2 and it has a chance at being #1, but it's still too early for me to say it's better than Ocarina of Time just yet.)

3. Majora's Mask

4. Twilight Princess

5. Wind Waker

6. Skyward Sword

My order for 3D Zeldas would be:

  1. Majora's Mask
  2. Ocarina of Time
  3. Wind Waker
  4. Twilight Princess
  5. Skyward Sword

As to where Breath of the Wild would fall into place, I don't know. I still haven't beaten it yet. I am greatly enjoying the game overall , and I'm feeling it will probably come out on top of WW, TP and SS. OoT and Majora's Mask though? I don't know. While I am really liking BotW, I do kind of miss the "conciseness" that other Zelda games had (for a lac of better words), where I wasn't getting constant "find X amount of Y quests" shoved on to me and where they didn't feel the need to make 900 of any kind of collectibles.

BotW at the top.

SS at the bottom.

Don't care much about what happens in-between.

Ok, ok, it'd be shitty to not give MM its proper 2nd place.
