I'm pretty convinced that the success of the PS3 weighs heavily on if Blu-Ray will become standard or not.

So I'm curious if anyone can surmise if the format is making any progress. I've only seen a few reviews for blu-ray movies here and there, but nothing big.

of course, it is still very early, so anything can happen.

While we're at it - same question for HD-DVDs.

I think really in order to look at success, you need to look at stand alone player sales which, for both blu ray and HD DVD are horrible. More people other than gamers need to adopt a nex gen movie format for it to be successful. and your average consumer doesn't know whats what.

It's pretty much squashing HD-DVD. Almost all of the BIG new movies are on Blue-Ray, alot of them are exclusive.

And the whole "porn not on blue-ray" thing has been debunked, there has already been a title annaounced for BR.

BR is destined to be the next standard, HD-DVD will lose, it's just a matter of time now.

It's doing  better than HD DVD but it is a long way away from topling DVD.

Barriers to entry are just too high at the moment.

Yes, Blu-Ray is doing good. Even though alot of its sucess is coming from the PS3. Im guessing in three years Blu-Ray will replace the DVD as the mainstream format.

Since this forum is Installed Base 101 I don't see how comparing it to DVD is even meaningful at this point of its life.

Early BR's were bad transfers using bad codecs. All current releases are very good. Warner which releases to both HD-DVD and BR have identical transfers/codecs going to both.

Olivier Van Wynendaele, Deputy General Manager of HD DVD for Toshiba stated that the Blu-ray sales figures included the redeemed vouchers given to new PS3 owners to receive a free movie and is not a true representation of actual sales. According to Van Wynendaele, Toshiba has sold 200,000 players versus 30,000 “true” Blu-ray players, and the 2 million PS3 sold should not be included in the sales figures of hardware. He also stated “that neither format could claim victory when high def player sales accounted for less than 1% of regular DVD player sales.” HD-DVD has been selling more software until december 06. But since then, it seems like HD is the winner one week then blue ray then hd. However, blueray will probably do better in the upcoming months since the european launch

Thats funny. Every Toshiba HD-DVD player comes with 5 vouchers for free HD-DVD movies. Is this guy complaining that those movies are being counted as well?

I don't see why we need Blu-Ray for games. If we can fit Halo 2 on one disc, we don't need any "next-gen format" for other games.

Not lies. I don't even like Halo. I've played it a few times and don't really care if I ever do again. Course, that's not my style. I need to be playing racing and sports games. And BR is gonna be awesome for video games. You can fit so much on just that one disc.

i always hear blu-ray/sony fanboys saying that blu-ray is outselling hd dvd 2:1 or 3:1, but's not even half the story. that 2:1 sale in favor of blu-ray is only for weekly sales. in truth, both sales are about even with blu-ray having a slight advantage. the sales according to nielson/videoscan is 100 for blu-ray to 89.25 for hd dvd as of the week of march 11, (since inception). that's only because of the lack of hd dvd's for the winter months. toshiba has announced the release dates for 70 hd dvd titles to be released by july where as sony has stated the release of 60 blu-ray titles by the same date. now factor in the 5:1 hardware sales in blu-ray's favor and one could clearly see a huge discrepancy. how can a format with 5:1 hardware sales only sell 2:1 against the competition and have almost the same amount of movies in total? now, if blu-ray was dealing "teh uber pwnage" against hd dvd, then why is it that the bda expects to surpass hd dvd in 3 years and not 3 months? fox has postponed all but 2 titles indefinitely. these titles where supposed to be released during the winter but according to fox, due to security issues, these titles will not be on sale anytime soon. rumors are they are going to release titles on hd dvd, but that's only a rumor with no proof, so don't count on this, just yet anyway. this war is still in the beginning and is far from being over.

sources:

bda expects lead in 3years

even sales

total movie count*includes charts*

nielsen/videoscan charts*please be advised that ytd means year to date sales (from january 1, 2007 until today) and si means since inception(meaning since hd dvd was introduced in spring 2006.)

for blu-ray release dates, visit blu-ray.com

here's a list of hd dvd titles to be released

here's the press release for the 70 hd dvd titles

prepare for an intresting war this spring and summer when the hd dvd add-on gets around a $130 price tag and the $600 sony bd player is released (not the ps3, a standalone unit.) this may swing the hi-def disks sales in hd dvd's favor.

btw, miss kitt3n, nice sig, especially, "Phantom eat paint chips".
