For someone like myself who has a high end PC, and a 360 / PS3... it pisses me off when developers decide they are going to delay the PC version. It boggles my mind. In many cases, I don't want to wait it out. Certian games, I want to play immediately.

Splinter Cell Conviction is the latest example. Yet, I'm being told I have to wait to play the game now, or play the inferior version even though I have a killer system?

Really ticked man.

No whats killing PC gaming are idiotic developers like Ubisoft with their half assed ports. Most of the time the PC version 'should" be better as long as they make a decent attempt to port the game.

Bad ports. Once its ported bad, its bad for ever. You can do nothing about it. I dont mind waiting a bit coz Bioware has always made me wait but their PC ports have always been the best of all systems. Besides I've enough backlogs of uncompleted games so a bit more time is always beneficial :) Yea, pretty selfish reasons, i know. :P

The ports wouldn't be half-assed or delayed if the pc version sold better. The pc has become a pick-up for developers. Sell the console versions first and then pick up what you can from pc gamers. They don't always invest an equal amount of resources into the pc version because it isn't worth the effort. Like it or not gaming is a business and these types of decisions have to be made.

the reason they dont like supporting the pc as much is because they are going to sell way more copies of the games on consoles.

Not developers. Publishers. And even then, it's mostly only Microsoft. They're using timed exclusives to try to coerce PC gamers into buying Xbox 360s (they shamelessly admit this as their intent). I wish they'd just accept that Windows is as much their gaming platform as the X360. xDimMaK

It is their gaming platform in that they created directx but remember they don't make money off third party windows titles. They want to sell as many 360 titles as possible to cover their investment into console gaming. Yea I agree it is lame that they killed off ensemble and the flight sim team but remember they still did more for pc gaming than any other company. Just be glad they aren't apple when it comes to gaming.

Ubi might be sucking at ports. But their PC exclusives are awesome. Anno 1404 is easily one of the finest games released this year on PC so far.

Giving credit where it's due, Mass Effect PC was by a Boston(?) studio called Demiurge, not Bioware. :D

I thought their last 2 ports (Assassins Creed and PoP?) were VERY well done. Great controls and controller support. Maybe they're turning over a new leaf?

Asassin's Creed on the PC was horrendeous :?, the new PoP I heard was alright, but it doesn't redeem their normally half assed ports.

I wish they'd just accept that Windows is as much their gaming platform as the X360. Killing one for the other doesn't make much sense, especially since they'd lose a massive selling point for their operating systems in the process.

EDIT: Yeah, I guess you could include bad ports as well. Console-inspired UIs and control schemes are probably the most annoying things to experience in a PC game. But I don't think that's really a widespread problem, let alone killing the PC gaming industry.

xDimMaK
delaying a game like alan wake on pc will only make me go off and buy uncharted 2 on ps3 instead. ms if you want the money release it on the same day on pc. delaying the pc version wont make you a cent from me. But it may make be give quite a bit to sony, ms delaying pc games = win for sony loss for ms.

Didn't play Vegas 2, but Vegas 1 was pretty shoddy port and that's not even taking account how they turned a brilliant tactical shooter into some sort of CoD clone. Not to mention blantantly lying to PCgamers about it for a year

Sorry, but I fail to see why console ports of games to PC means they want to kill PC gaming. It's like saying CD Projekt wants to kill console gaming as they cancelled Witcher on consoles or GPG killing it because port of Sup Com was bad on 360. Anyways, few things regarding ubi from their recent earnings release :- 1. Their PC exclusives sell pretty well, and PC is the biggest revenue contributor after DS ytd 2. All PC ports I played i.e., PoP 2008 or AC ran flawlessly maxed out and were made to run very well with key/b + m. 3. AC2 is releasing same time on PC this time around (if they were interested in killing it they wouldn't do that would they ? ) 4. Another interesting thing which I found was, Ubi said they have a way to reduce pircay drastically on PC and this will most probably implemented in a game coming out at the end of the year or early next year

This really is THE reason that PC gaming has been laboring. Back in 2000 just before the Xbox release, Microsoft admitted that PC gaming was in the way of their Xbox strategy. I think they are probably suprised at how well PC gaming is still doing despite their efforts to curtail its gamer base.

They have slowly been trying to erode support for the PC and coerce gamers to invest in their Xbox platform. This is clearly evident by the fact that they hold back PC release dates and their publishing studio now produces virtually no PC game titles. They want to control the entire video entertainment industry through their hardware. As a result, I don't think I've ever witnessed a more dull and boring time in gaming history as I've witnessed in the past two years. Coincidentally this period seems to coincide with their second Xbox product.

the real story is that developers are paid for exclusivity and time releases by MS and Sony in their war for supremecy.

They pay to have games exclusive to their platform or time released on another platform in the hope they can increase their market share.

Once a game has been delayed on one platform then you are guaranteed to have slower -lower sales on that platform. Once that dynamic is put in to place why would you then invest money in polishing games to the best of your ability.

When there is a multiplatform release done at the same time then the PC does very well in sales e.g. Fallout 3 (in recent memory). Given the choice of getting the game on your system of choice at release for those who own gaming PC's and consoles, I would suspect that the majority would get it for their PC. Denied that choice then they will get it for their console instead. It is only those who don't have a console or those people who are prepared to wait for the better gaming experience on the PC who don't buy a game on release if it is time delayed.

There is a big difference between developers leaving the PC because they don't want to develop for it, as opposed to being paid vast amounts of money by Sony and MS for exclusivity or to not release at the same time as consoles.

I loved how in one interview MS guy got careless and said this:

If we launch a game that is on 360 and PC simultaneously, we basically shoot ourselves in the foot by allowing the German market to choose to play the PC version - because they are more likely to buy that than spend their money on the Xbox 360. (...) If we launched a Halo game on PC and 360 in Germany simultaneously, 80 per cent of sales would be on the PC

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Faction red faction 1# was released for ps2 and then they released it like 4 months later for pc which is better than the ps2 version. last time i played red faction on pc there was actually servers and people playing, i think that was late last year. red faction guerilla for pc is being released in august, the 360/ps3 versions are already out, but pc version will dominate them just like the original LOL.

Yet Microsoft is doing more harm to PC gaming than Sony and Nintendo combined.

halo1,halo2,fable,gears of war1... how Microsoft is doing more harm to PC gaming Please list the games made by A**holes Sony and Nintendo for PC

look at recent history. MS hasn't released a PCgame in almost two years and has NO upcoming PCgames in the pipeline. Let's see what MS has done to PCgaming since Xbox launched

* Moved FASA franchises (Battletech, CrimsonSkies and Shadowrun) to Xbox, when they flopped there MS closed down FASA studios and sold the IPs. Not to mention that they didn't extend the relationships with independent PC developers who worked on those franchises in their PC forms (especially Zipper is a good example, they went in to Playstation 2 where they created the popular SOCOM franchise and eventually got bought by Sony)
* Moved Links and Midtown Madness to Xbox, they flopped there, so Access Software was sold to 2K
* Let go of Digital Anvil teams who worked on PC Conquest: Frontier Wars and Loose Cannon. The remaining team was switched to Xbox to work on BruteForce, it flopped, MS as always closed them down.
* Got rid of Ashersons Call franchise by selling it back to Turbine
* Let Big Hug Games go (despite owning part of it), the company was bought by THQ
* Canceled the MMORPG Mythica
* Canceled MS Train Simulator 2 (it's developed KUJU eventually restarted the project and released it as Rail Simulator through Electronic Arts)
* Got rid of Marvel Online MMORPG, the devs went to Take2 where it became Champions Online
* First switched Ensemble (their most successful PC dev and one that specialized in games that do not work all that well on consoles) to 360 to make Halo Wars and then when the game was almost done they announced the studio will be closed down when the game ships.
* Zoo Tycoon IP is no longer in MS portfolio as the developer Blue Fang has switched publishers to THQ
* They bought PC-centric Lionhead Studios and from that moment there's just sound of crickets when asking about any upcoming PC projects they have.
* Even some ports of console games MS published (namely Jade Empire and Mass Effect) weren't published by Microsoft

let's not even forget about the whole GFWL fiasco, closing down ACES Studio (and canceling MS Train Sim2...for the second time!!) or recent Alan Wake nonsense.

Sony actualy publishes and develops plenty of PCgames, compared to Microsoft Sony is a PCgaming powerhouse

SquatsAreAwesom

Just tough it out, PC gaming isnt dying, its just in its depression stage, it will bounce back and crush the pathetic consoles when ps4 and xbox720 launch with crappy titles. Just wait.
