I'm just going to be a little bit critical of probably the best use of the Wii's motion sensing, and thus criticise the Wii itself a little.

Wii sports is fun but come on, its nowhere near as fun as real golf and tennis. Seriously, I'm a gamerholic but there comes a point where if the real thing is so accessible you might as well just do that (with the minor bonus that you become more healthy!).

Cue lots of replies saying this is a board about games etc.. I'm not saying that Nintendo are reducing peoples health or something ridiculous like that, I'm just saying there is something tragic about millions of people sat inside playing lame mock ups of real sports when they can easily do the real thing.  I know most are going to rip into me but does anyone else sort of agree?

Think about this:

"Hey mom! Lets go play tennis!"

"Oh, sorry Billy, I'd rather force you to stay inside and play video games. "

...

If billy had played an xbox, he would have even less exercise.

Gosh.

I agree. The thing is I skate competitively so I enjoy a little game of Tony Hawk or Thrasher to relax every now and then. Of course real-life skills are ten-fold more useful than gaming skills. I would pick a full day of real skating over videogame skating anyday. Although, I'm not a very good tennis player, golfer or bowler (or guitar player for that matter) so videogame activities, such as Wiisports or Guitar Hero is as close as I'll ever get to being incredible at it.

Regardless of how close the Wii tries to emulate the "real" sport, it still comes closer than any other sports game (of course not graphically). If you are going to buy a Sports game at all then, you might as well go with the Wii. But that's the thing about sports games, you play them when you can't/won't play the real deal. Remember, video GAMES, not video simulations. Besides... it's really really fun on the Wii.

It may not be as fun as real life, but it sure kicks all other sports games in the ass funwise and it's also less time, money and effort consuming that real sports.

I beg to differ...but then again it depends what sports you decide to play. If you play lacrosse (like my brother) you can spend up to at least $600 for a good stick, net, pads, shoes and helmet. But if you were wise (like me) you could drop 120 bones for a decent deck, trucks, bearings and wheels...and helmets are for sissies, if I damage myself pull the plug...It's hardcore!

People can go outside but they don't and that's just one genre, think of shooters, you can't just go outside and shoot people.

Well theres that one theme park that lets you be Mario, and using a system of pullyeys and robots lets you do the jumps, kill gombas.....

For me, I get games are things I can't do, like in GTA, I can't really rob a bank, kill 400 people, then pay 100 bucks to clear myself at pay and spray. Or in Sonic, I really can't genticlly modify myslef to run fast and look like a hedge hog. And in Oblivion, as phsycotic as I am, I can't get magical orbs of light to fly from a stick.

first of all,it`s not that easy for everyone to go out and play real tennis or baseball, for example in my country it's not that easy to play all these sports,u can only play tennis[for a really limited amount of time] and bowling[me and my friend payed about 50€ to play for 3 hours,]not to mention the weather condition or the transportation,it`s not so easy as u think it is,at least in my country,i live in greece, besides that,in order to play real golf u must be good at it, and the wii doesn't really require this,...it has many advantages...and i have to say that i`m playing wii sports about 3 monts and still i`m not bored of it...

All I can say is that I think wii would be a  really nice gift to my kids (if I had any) or my girlfriend.  The wii seems to fit the needs of certian individuals, and I think that I would like to use it (wiimote) too...but not have games designed to use it for every frecking game on the system.  That's where I feel the wii becomes a gimmik somewhat.

The wimote should be like rumble IMO, where if the right game comes along the developers use it's functions to enhance the quality of the game, but not in every game where in some circumstances it might actually take away from the experience by forcing something unnatural.

Playing Wii sports is far more health than a sports game with a regular controller. Playing real sport is better of course but no game is ever going to be better than the real thing, on Wii or any other platform.

Ok, but my kids and I can't go play tennis, baseball, bowling, boxing, and golf every night in real life.  With the Wii, we can.    Is it the same thing?  Of course not.  Who ever said it was?  But the truth is that if we weren't playing Wii sports, and actively participating (in actively, I mean standing up and virtually acting out the motions of the real thing) in a game then maybe one or two of us would be playing a game and everyone else would be doing something else.    Bottom line: it's fun to play together.

What's so "tragic" about that?

hmm, actually I tried to play Tennis last summer and it sucked. I love playing tennis on Wii-sports, and before you guys start with the typical "get ur fat arse outside, lazy gamer" crap, I play basketball, go swimming frequently, and go to the gym a lot. I'm also signing up for Kempo classes this week. I'm not some inactive lard-ass, I just don't have the time, money, or equipment to go learn golf and tennis, but it's quite fun playing for a 20 minutes before school in the morning.
