Theres a small screen whenever you start up the disc that says "Uses technology developed by ID" or whatever. Anyone know what ID made that they use?

Quake 3 engine... thats what... COD1 was made using Quake 3 engine... Games made by ID software that use quake 3 engine are: Quake 3 and Return to Castle Wolfenstien ... games not made by id that use quake 3 engine: Soldier of Forturn3, No one lives for ever 2, Heavy meatl Fakk2, Alice, and a crap ton of other pc games made in the 2000-2002 era. (even some as late as 2003). If you don't know who ID is then do some gaming history research. They popularized the FPS or real time 3d view with games like Wolfenstien 3d, Doom , and Quake. (although Origins did it first with Ultima Underworld - the first real all directional 3d enviroment)

Which is kinda funny considering that Quake 3 engine was based off Quake 2 engine which was based off of Quake 1 which was based off of Doom which was based off of Wolf3d... all the way back in 1992. I am sure the COD engine is radically different then the original Quake 3 engine. I wonder if they will use newer tech for the new respawn studio game?

And aren't COD4 and MW2 still built on heavily modified Quake engine?

Yep. :P HEAVILY modified, but it's still Quake 3 at the heart.

Yeah super modified, same way Bioshock 1/2 run on heavily modified Unreal 2.

CoD uses a modified version of the Quake 3 engine, and I believe it still actually does.

Basically ID is, while not as successful as Epic, an Engine developer. They create an engine to license to other devs, and usually showcase it with an extremely good looking game, so while you may not have seen ID make much since Doom 3, they have been making money off of licensing the engine. You'll see it again with the release of the new game Rage.

Crytek is also trying to get into this business with CryEngine3. A lot of what they have showcased is them actually building something on PC, and copy pasting to the PS3 and having it work properly which should make it extremely appealing to 3rd party devs.

As for now though 99% of multiplatform games (running on 3rd party engines) seem to be running off Unreal Engine 3 because it's very easy to use, and saves devs years of development time to make games that look great like ME2, or Batman AA.

I know all about ID- theyre my favorite company. With the exception of this fact, obviously.
