In all reality, gaming is better now than it has ever been. It's cool to go back and retro game every once in a while, but in the grand scheme of things, gaming is at a point now that is far greater than anything in the past. It's not just full of first person shooters, there are options for all different types of genres, and every genre has great games.

I only see games getting better and better and at a more rapid pace than ever. The reason being 2 main things. Money and competition.

Games are raking in more money than they ever have before in the past. The popularity is only increasing, and that leads to more and more money. The competition is also higher than it has ever been, and that leads to better and better games. Regardless of who is winning the console sales of this generation between the 3 companies, it's safe to say that Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are all doing extremely well, which is a great thing for the industry. They're all doing everything in their power to out do each other, and that leads to better and better games. Being a multi-console owner of every system this gen is great, and it will be even better to own all 3 systems next gen.

Disagree completely. Back in the late 80s/early 90s, there was far more competition. Back then, there weren't ads every which way you turned. It was more of a word of mouth sort of deal. Developers HAD to make good games to sell. There was less money involved, so if publications like EGM put up a really bad review, it meant a LOT as far as sales go. More money is actually sort of bad. Look at how sports have been corrupted. Blood doping/'roids--whent there's money on the line, the competition isn't always good.

I wish there was a universal console, like a VCR/DVD player.

There wouldn't be any exclusives and you wouldn't have to spend a grand on hardware.

Can't agree with that, when baseball was full of roids it fun as hell to watch. Now I can't get through a game. I really wish they let everyone use roids. Watching people hit 60-70 HRs a year is exciting.

Overall gaming has gotten better no doubt. There are issues I have, but still, gaming is great right now. All generations have had amazing games, so it is hard to pick a favorite.

I disagree with that because back then, the general gaming community was much less educated about gaming than they are today. There were a fraction of the ways to research games compared to today. Now adays, there are hundreds of ways to find out the quality of games, and every little thing is held under a microscope. Not only that, there are more companies involved manufacturing consoles with equal success. Back in the late 80s, Nintendo basically had a monopoly going as the dominant console with hardly any competition. Now adays, there are TONS more development studios than there were back then, and any little thing they do wrong is so heavily scrutinized on hundreds of different websites. There is almost so much information on gaming today that it is hard to even get away from, whereas back in the day, you had to actively search for the answers and pursue them. There was so little accessible information back in the day about gaming, people would often make purchases based on box art alone. Remember how THQ's stock went down the very second Homefront started getting rated 7's from online gaming web sites? The game underwent so much scrutiny for getting rated a 7 that it dropped to $40 dollars on launch day. Back in the late 80's and early 90's, a game like homefront would be considered a success and be praised.

No you don't, because then you would HAVE to spend a grand on hardware. The industry would go to hell. When there's no competition, they would be able to get away with whatever they wanted because you would have no choice but to buy it if you wanted to play video games.

You don't have to spend a grand on the VCR/DVD player, so why would you have to spend a grand on the Panasonic Xbox 360?

Getting there as well. I cant see me buying 2 or three consoles next gen. Just want a nice rig, my BC PS3 and 360 and my backlog of games to play.

In the case where there would be different brands of the same console, then that would be different. I don't think that he was thinking about that, but if he was I was mistaken and I will admit that. I'm assuming he meant that one company would be making one console, which would result in the industry degrading greatly. But if he meant that there would be different brands of the same console, things would be different. I'll leave it to him to clarify that.

That's just not true. There were still gaming magazines; the community was just much smaller. Games today have much more potential than they did back then, but very few games actually end up being more fun than older games. JRPGs, action/adventure, and hack/slash are all worse than last gen. FPS, TPS, and WRPG are just as good as last gen, but not much better. If you game on PC and like RTS and adventure games, this gen has been fantastic. Personally, I've enjoyed PC gaming this gen, but console gaming has been hit and miss, mostly miss.

The only reason gaming is like this is because of one key feature.

INTERNET.

Completely agree. That is single handedly why gaming has progressed and improved so much from the late 80s and early 90s. Back then, developers COULD get away with making a bad game. Now adays, they can't because it will be spotted a full week before it is even released and the word will spread like wildfire.

Disagree. The graphics of games this gen improves, but gameplaywise I just felt meh. Last weekend I went back to play something last gen for 30 hours and had fun, and the game looked like crap.

And rpgs are trying to be more action packed nowdays. It seems the dev really want to rid of the stats, just having skills/weapon upgrades for their rpgs. Action games did such with C&C last gen would be called rpg wannabe, and now it is teh INNOVATION.

How do you explain the sales of 50 Cent: Bulletproof? The internet was around last gen. How do you explain bad games this gen like Final Fantasy XIII scoring AA? What old game was bad but still sold like crazy? The bestsellers from this gen have not really been the best games. Most of them are decent and some of them just aren't very good.

What you are requesting is done already. Multiplatformers, Ports, Shovelware...thats basically every system having the same game.

if people miss the old games so much, they can either buy the console with the games they want or go try out an emulator and some roms for that console if they want. i never understood all of this bad mouthing about this generation being bad. i think it's probably the best despite some flooding of shooters on the market. it has so many games i want i can't keep up. it litterally has games for everyone.

I meant that it would be open market, similar to VCR/DVD/Blu-ray.

Not only would Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony be making consoles, but other companies such as Panasonic, Samsung, LG, etc would too.

If you wanted a really high quality console with lots of functionality that would last 10+ years, you would drop $500.

If you just wanted a bare bones player to just play games, it would cost a lot like $130-$150.

Whatever the circumstances though, you'd still be able to play any game that was released.

Ah, okay. That clarifies things, sorry for the misunderstanding. I personally feel like that would fragment the industry quite drastically, but there's no way to tell exactly how an idea like that would work until it was put into effect.

Well the 3DO failed before we could properly see how a unified specification console, manufactured by different companies would work. So we would have to wait for a 4DO. ;)
