http://www.theverge.com/2013/1/17/3889182/sony-selling-new-york-hq-building

Sony will sell its US headquarters building to investors for $1.1 billion, according to Bloomberg. The sale is expected to generate net cash of around $770 million for Sony, which is working to cut losses across the board. The company will continue occupying the 37-story building at 550 Madison Avenue for up to three years, leasing from new owners the Chetrit Group, which also co-owns Willis Tower in Chicago. The building was previously owned by AT&T, which sold it to Sony in 2002 for $236 million.

Sony hopes to complete the sale in March perhaps not coincidentally the end of its fiscal year, by which it has predicted a return to profit. The company is said to be currently re-evaluating its predictions based on the sale, however, so we may well see more positive results for the year than previously expected.

Hmmm. Things not looking good.

The companys on there way turning to profit and there not doing so good? The fact is Sony got to big and now they are shrinking down so they can be more competitive. You dont see Apple or Microsoft with any 1.1 billion dollar buidings.

They're only doing this cause Microsoft sent spies against them to sabotage the company within. So say insider sources.

Sony is still in the red and doing thing now before they have to report their latest earnings. Resort to selling your property is never a good thing. For example, people in debt who mortgage their house is never a good thing.

Fact of the matter is you said they only paid 236m for the property and theyre selling it for 1.1b I don't see the issue here.

Except Sony has like 5 houses. They have 2 headquaters in Japan , one in California and one in NewYork and manymore. They spent to much money to begin with and need to shrink down.

So, whether they post a loss or a profit for the year hindges on the pending sale of the building? They did the same a little while ago when they sold off assets to cut down on their loses.

Hey guys the 3 major companies selling video game consoles currently are massive companies worth billions of dollars. The sale of buildings, factories, compounds, etc. to them is marginal. Some person sitting around on his pc is not going to predict the doom for some company worth trillions/billions of yen/dollars.

This thread could be copied and pasted with a few words changed. You could paste it to a BMW forum saying bmw is selling some factory so mercedes can own them in the face or vice versa. Its a classic my dad can kick your dads ass post.

That is just conjecture. You don't like sony for whatever reason. That's fine. However they are only # 87 on the worldwide global 500. They could be better but lol they are aren't goingt bankrupt or something. Oh look the car manufacturer Peugeot is # 85 are they just gonna keel over too? Burn - jimmy just got an ouchie. Anyway annoying doom saying lems aside cough karateeechop cough Sony are on the right track. Anyone who knows business has seen Sony grow to a size that makes them inflexible - a trait that is horrible for success. By reducing their size and focusing their work force they gain the ability to act on trends in the business and take advantage of new tech in a timely manner. Yes, thank you! I'm sick of these "Sony is doomed" threads from kids who no know about the economy! Like some adolescent knows better than a bunch of sophisticated Japanese men who have run very successful business ventures in the past. Also, while inflation means they aren't getting quite the 4x amount they bought it for, you would expect in this economy for it to be worth less. I wonder if they got any additions in that time, or if its location become more important, or if there was some compounding factor that made it worth a lot more.

Gotta hand it to, them. They made a good decision there, assuming they don't end up paying more to occupy the building in the long run.

Did you read the list properly? Sony maybe at 87 but they are in minus profits according to that list (-5,784 million) MS revenue stream maybe smaller but they are in posotive profits to the tune of 23,150 million, That list in no way reflects the financial position of either company.

if this returns them to profitability for the fiscal year then that's all it does, if nothing else changes in revenue generation through their products and services they'll need to sell more assets next year, but if they're confident they can turn things around then buying time until that happens is the only thing they can do and remember they raised another $1.9 billion by a selling those convertible bonds this year, that's when their stock fell into the $9 area, they had to do that because their credit was poo, so now they have at least $3 billion in desperate revenue generation to keep them out of the red, that's $3 billion next year they're going to need to generate unless they want to hurt their stock issuing more convertible bonds, or sell more of their buildings

if they post another bad financial quarter their stock price will continue to drop selling the building gives them a positive report hopefully protecting the stock price as well as a short term liquidity boost, unfortunately what it does not do is change the market or their actual earning potential, the lease is going to be an additional overhead, I have a nasty feeling Sony is playing for time, but making moves if things don't go the way they want them to they can quickly re-structure a smaller business and focus on the key money makers.

All the contrary... If not what they will win by selling the building,is what they saves by not having to keep it.. It looks like sony is really shaking off anything that it sees as a problem.

So, did the new owner agree to keep'em around or do all the cows there get evicted and thrown out on the street?

Eh, Sony's got to do what they got to do to survive and I guess this is only the beggining with much more to come but in reality, that's a good thing, ya gotta get honest with yourself as a company or it really is ba, bye. :P
