[QUOTE="Kotaku"]He told me his take on the story and his frustrations and I told him mine, in the end we agreed to disagree on some level, but also decided that our readers and gamers in general would be best served if Sony and Kotaku could still play nicely together.

In a nutshell: The story remains up and Sony has re-invited us to the meetings and interviews initially scheduled for the Game Developers Conference.

Sony embarrassed themselves; at least they can admit that they know how foolish they were behaving.

I declare this round a win for Kotaku. They got to stay on Sony's privlige list and kept the story up. Yay for Sony being willing to swallow their pride! Still think the atmosphere at the Sony-Bloggers meetup at GDC will be rather sour...

Kotaku doesn't need extra publicity, and the story was resolved before it could spread far enough for it to do anything positive for them.

This was a bad deal for Sony all around, I realize any press is good press, but does it still work when you alienate the press. If Sony thought they were under a microscope before I would have hated to see the reactions from Journalists after this. This was the only smart thing Sony could have done in this situation, congratulations Sony not only did we get the possibility of rumble and Piichevements today, we got a Smart Move, amazing day.

True, but it makes no sense. There's no motivation. Kotaku doesn't need the publicity, it gets over 400k hits daily. And Sony played the villian, something that'd be foolish to do voluntarily given that the target population that would care about this already harbors feelings towards Sony that generally aren't particularly favorable. Kotaku had no motivation, Sony had no motivation, so I don't think this was staged.

this wasn't a publicity stunt. kotaku didn't gain anything, Sony got a black-eye that won't heal just because they kiss and made up (this will still be reported on over the next few days as the newsday starts up tommorow) and if anything it just leaves Nintendo and MS with the ability to call sony out on "stealing" thier ideas. Sony got hurt by this, but it's not going to sink thier reputation like some lemms will have you think. Although it surely doesn't make them look very media friendly.

Pure publicity stunt.

Yeah I don't think this is a publicity stunt. It was for too short for Kotaku to get anything from it, and the bad press Sony got won't just blow over that easily. And if it was I guess that mean the whole Kotaku is biased against Sony doesn't hold any water anymore.

Well, I expected this to happen. If you think about it, Sony cannot handle another PR incident. I mean, everyone in the media hates Sony right now. Seriously, I haven't seen any pro-Sony articles in a very long time. Oh well, I'll give credit to Sony though, at least they're smart enough to admit they've been very very stupid.

yea, but if you're going to be a man and make a decision like this, then stick to your decision. don't be a *itch and try to whine and take privileges away because you're in a pouty mood because your secrets got out into the public domain, only to come running back when you get exposed. let your decisions be your decisions and deal with the repercussions of your decisions. that's manhood.

If it was a PR stunt, Sony came out of it with its foot blown off... again.

Was it a PR stunt, it could have well been, but for Sony to play the role of a blackmailing, internet bully, who at the last second decides to kiss and make up due to the Internet taking up torches and ready to burn Sony at the stake, well... I just don't see the logic behind it.  Yes it created a lot of buzz for the few hours it was going on, but come on, Sony didn't come out a hero.  If anything it's Sony crawling back with its tail tucked between its legs.

Is anyone going to care that Sony manned up and apologized for being a jerk?  Maybe a little, but it doesn't change the fact that they were bullying around Kotaku and blackmailing them.

I don't really think it was much of a publicity stunt... it was way, way too stupid, and hurt Sony. The "kiss and make up" aspect will not be seen by a rather sizeable percentage of those who saw the original story, and it will eventually be forgotten or disregarded, and a couple months from now, what everyone will remember is that "Sony tried to force a blogger to their will, and got severely (for lack of a better word) pwned".

Kotaku, on the other hand, came out real good. The image of a bastion of internet integrity, a mention on every single gaming forum and tech news site out there, and without much of a negative hit.

I think what happened was that the PSH thing was an important revelation of the GDC conference, and that the PR dept. of Sony were under a lot of pressure to keep it a surprise. When Kotaku contacted them with a leak (leaked info was their first mistake), they went into crazed, irrational damage control mode, and didn't see a quicker way to stop that than to strongarm a simple blogger. Mistake two.

So Karraker went through with the idea of strongarming him. Mistake three, as Kotaku was most definitely not gonna take it silently. Because of these three mistakes, the story truly broke out. If it weren't for this, it would have been just another harebrained rumor that nobody would have cared about by saturday... but Karraker's actions made it spread like wildfire across the internet, which was the exact opposite of what Sony wanted.

Or was it? Right now, the GDC conference expectations are most definitely higher than they were before. Did sony actually intend to take a hit to their (severely tarnished) reputation in order to generate hype? I wouldn't be surprised if they were dumb enough to actually do this.

For Kotaku, obviously they are a news site, so getting the NEWS OF THE DAY award is beneficial.
For Sony, this bring up the expectation for the upcoming GDC (im totally looking forward to it). They got the hype up before actually release any detail (if it's true then it's good for them, if it's fault then it's not).

One night, one day of discussion might seem nothing for you. But News site, News paper are all about One day, one night headlight, frontpage.

I don't think that when we get up tomorrow anyone will visit the Kotaku site more than they had done in the past. which, of course, means if this was a publicity stunt, it failed horribly for them. as for SONY...the conclusion was embarassing. it would be the worst pub stunt in recent history.

Are people actually saying that because Sony was cutting off a blog that was extensively anti-Sony (eventhough Sony supported them with a ton of free swag), that they hold enough power to give the Sony PR department a run for their money? Do people think kotaku is that big?

here's how it went down

Kotaku go wind of a rumor (now it seems like much more than a rumor since sony defended it so greatly).

Sony tried to bully Kotaku out of publishing the "rumor" by denying them future press access.  This was pretty much a bluff.

Kotaku calls the bluff figuring that if sony tries to blacklist them they will get just as many readers publishing the blacklist story.

Sony blacklists Kotaku which creates a pretty quick media backlash against sony, and sony goes into "oh crap what did we do now" mode.

I don't know what sony was thinking with threatening Kotaku they should of done what every other major business does and ignore it.  It was clearly written as a rumor, and nobody would of believed it had it not been for sony causing a huge uproar over Kotaku printing it.

A bit harsh you guyz...

Sony didn't want the rumour put up possibly 'cause it's true, it ruins they're big surprise for GDC.

Kotaku think hahahaa we can get the you heard it here first angle woohooooo so they post it anyway.

Sony obviously feeling rather pissed at that (frackin' journalists!) decide well we'll just make sure they don't get the whole stroy then hahahahahaa

Then every1 hates on Sony for it because it's generally accepted that journalists do stuff to piss people off all the time

So there's nothing Sony can do but say fine...but you've ruined our big day lol hahahahahahahahahahaa
