Do any of you think Sony will end up buying exclusive rights for the Persona series?
Doubt it, why spend the money?
The games sell to a Japanese-loving audience, of which the Xbox and Wii U have little of compared to the PS3 and PS4, and their games have to be tailor made for 3DS like Q was, which means Persona 5 won't happen there. Their next biggest viable audience is probably PC but Atlus doesn't seem to be hopping on that train for a while
I don't think they're in the financial position to just start buying up IP's left and right, I mean they're going the crowd funding route for a reason, they're not Microsoft.
Who also can't afford to buy IPs left and right, they're too busy wasting it on 1 hit wonder studios.
rights, no, Atlus seems content giving them exclusivity gratis
and jeez, when Atlus just went through money troubles, got Sega to be their sugar daddy, they refuse to expand their market even when they have a hot commodity... well, critically it has a strong cult following, as well as one of the best localization teams in the western market, they shouldn't just let it go to waste
Isn't the main series all Playstation exclusive anyway? Why would they buy it if it's already exclusive?
Lol no. You seriously think Atlus would relinquish control over their biggest series to any other company to any degree, for any amount of money? Especially when said series shares so many assets and particulars with their other series?
I dont think so. IT's a niche title ain't it? I mean in the big scope of things? I think it doesn't appeal to the masses as a whole, which doesn't mean its a bad franchise, but what makes me think they wouldnt buy it.
The series as a whole is at over 6 million units worldwide, and Persona 4 has collectively sold over 1.5 million units. It's not a niche series, not anymore (and is far less niche and more profitable than something like Team ICO games).

They spent 2 billion dollars on Mojang...Because they can't afford it...Nice logic

Right cause MS is now going to buy everything cause of that?

That's surprising to me. I haven't bothered to buy nor play any past games in the franchise. I thought being a JRPG outside of Final Fantasy wouldn't generate those type of sales. I still don't think they would buy it, do you?

Like everyone else, MS Entertainment division obviously has a budget, they can buy any IP they want if it's fore sale and if it's actually worth buying. As for this thread, no, Sony doesn't have the means to buy Persona and Atlus wouldn't sell it anyway.

Nah, not at all. They get exclusivity anyway, since PlayStation is where the audience is.
More importantly, Atlus would never relinquish control over its IP at all- right now it is exclusive, but it is exclusive by choice. If Atlus wants to make Persona games for other systems, they can. That, and the fact that so many assets are shared across Persona, all of SMT, and Etrian Odyssey, means that this will literally never happen, short of Sony buying Atlus out outright (and we all know how that went last time).
that would be a waste of money and im sure they dont care about buying it anyways, why would they?
The Persona fanbase is rabid enough that that would be an assured ~1 million sales with each new console, assuming a new Persona game was announced for it.
Of course, since Persona is largely PlayStation exclusive anyway, there is no point to trying to buy the franchise out, and Atlus would not sell it anyway.
JRPG only does well on PlayStation. Sony doesn't need to buy them and Atlus won't sell it so it worked out. Everyone had a chance to snag up the franchise when Atlus was up for bid. Sega won.
Eh, not true. They sell well on Nintendo (especially Nintendo handhelds) and on PC too.
Really, the only console they don't sell on is Xbox (and back in the day, Sega).

Guess the term success varies from platform to platform. I mean SE said FFXIII did well on PC and it only sold like 200,000+ iirc. Not sure about Nintendo but I assumed it does bad there because I don't own any jrpg on my Wii U.
*speaking solely for consoles

That makes sense.
Complete waste of money cause the game is already exclusive on the Playstation console. When is the release date for this game anyways?

LOL but you know something? With the way the PS4 is selling and them not needing to spend much capital, their credit rating is getting better. But still, I agree with Blabadon. Sony has no real need to buy exclusive rights to it when Xbox isn't clamoring for it and I guess Nintendo isn't either.

Just wondering, are you referring to Mojang? If so, well Cobalt does look pretty effing cool for what it is.

Good point. From the people I speak to, and comments I read the Persona fans also seem to like Tales of, and other JRPGs. If your company is Japanese, and gets these games regardless and the two competitors either don't serve that to their consumers or do so on handheld than why buy the exclusivity?
@Ant_17: in company of heroes 2 you have commanders that let you build different types of units. They sell the commanders as dlc some of them were pay2win too when they first released. They also sell paint skins for units like different camo patterns for vehicles etc. it's ridiculous. Just google sega and dlc and you will see the rage lol.
Edit: also before anyone says it I'm not hating on Persona 5. It's actually one of the games I'm looking forward to on ps4, but I know Sega and they are microtransaction Kings now. P4 had dlc so I'm thinking they are gonna push it hard in P5 like they do in all the games they publish now.
@oflow: Persona 4 sees the day on the PS2 so no DLC there and for Golden on the Vita, I don't remember any DLC for it. For Persona Q on the 3DS they did release some persona as DLC
I might if I was Sony, I ain't as sure as most seem to be that the main persona games will always only show up on the PS. I ain't even sure that P5 will only ever be on the PS (well P5 will, but the updated version might now). So I might spring for it IF I was Sony, especially since the Persona games increases their audience with each release, and with Sega as a Publisher they might use that added reach and try to put it on more platforms.
Unless there is already a deal in house between Sony and Atlus ;)
With the proper amount of begging at the next E3 for a Kickstarter, selling off some more buildings and as long as PSN doesn't sustain another security breach.........anything is possible for this almost unwanted series.
No. How can they... Person is a SMT game series, owned by Atlus... and Sega now owns Atlus... i'm pretty sure Sega didn't buy up Atlus just to sell off its franchises. But who knows, Atlus/Sega are too stupid to release the game series on all the platforms anyway, so who knows?
Doubt it, why spend the money?
Exactly. the games are exclusive on the PS3 and 4 anyway (aside form the minor 3DS exclusives)... sony has no need to buy a series that is doing exactly what they would pay to do anyway, lol.
