So where do the PlayStation platforms stand? PS2 is sitting pretty at over 120 million units sold. PSP is at a respectable 26 million sold, with 30 million expected to be surpassed shortly.

So where does that leave PS3? According to Kaz, PS3 has sold in between 5 and 6 million units, leaning slightly towards the 5 million end.

Expectations are high for the holidays however - Sony expects to reach 11 million PS3's by the end of the year. We reckon reaching that goal without a price cut will be a challenge and perhaps even miracle.

11 million sounds way too high without a 40GB SKU out in the market.

Maybe 8 million.

Perhaps a price cut is in order? By the sound of that statement of selling 11 million Ps3s?

I seem to remember Jack Tretton saying that there would be no new pricing announcement until supplies of the 60GB SKU were exhausted.

PSU read it wrong.

According to Gamespot, Sony said 11 mill by the end of the fiscal year, which means Spring of 2008.

When does Spring end in the US?

Since that would be around MGSIV's release, that estimate seems plausible.

Umm, they would need to sell 1.5 million consoles worldwide a month to reach 11 million, even with those numbers Sony published (which I bet are shipped to retailers, so that means there is some inventory in those numbers).

Even with a $400 SKU, no way in the name of the Virgin Mary would that happen.

I can't believe 5 million people bought a $600 console. Man I hope the next console from Sony is $800 because obviously you guys don't see a problem spending that much money on a console.

Ahh ok, March 31, 2008. That is a little bit more realistic but I doubt they will make it still as that is still near 700K units worlwide a month.

The fiscal year ends the the end of march, I think. So, it might be possible if they release the $400 sku.

I doubt it. If it were coming in 2007, they would have announced it at TGS.

Mind you, I still expect a 40GB PS3 to come out, but probably in early 2008 before MGSIV and GTAIV.

Why does everyone assume a $399 40GB PS3 when the 80GB is still at $600 with no mention of a pricedrop during Sony's keynote?

Why would a 40GB unit be so much cheaper when the cost difference betweena 80GB hdd and a 40GB hdd are negligible?

The thing is that they NEED a price cut in order to reach that mark, even if it is a temporary thing, they want to move more consoles and software, then they need to cut the price for a while.

11 million by the end of the year would be amiracle. However, 11 million by March 31, 2008 is possible. But how things are going as of late it seems unlikely. If they infact do come out with the 40 gig then the 11 million is very possible.

Like MS... they deal with numbers shipped. Remember when MS annouced they "sold 10 million 360s... like they said they would last year" Oh how embaressing.
