It's David vs Goliath. Microsoft and Xbox are just going to always play the game of one-upmanship. Microsoft release the Xbox 360, it sells well. Sony releases a comparable product with a few advantage and disadvantages against the 360. Microsoft releases another xbox 360 that matches everything the ps3 would have over the xbox 360 (storage capacity doubled of ps3, runs cooler, hdmi, even same color as sony's console). I say that this will be Sony's last console (may stick to portable gaming, as I love my psp). It is goign to be remarkable how much market share Sony will lose to Microsoft over the next 5 years, with myself as an example of one.shadow8585too early to tell although the ps3 wont, i believe, have the same advantage as the ps2, i think it will significantly loose market share
[QUOTE="magiciandude"]Where is the fun in that? Then would would have a better idea of how this gen will turn out!Why don't we wait till mid 2007? Then we'll talk.

Well good point. Then again, it's just me turning more into a manticore.

If David was a giant as well maybe. -_-Vandalvideo
True enough. The problem for SONY isn't just marketshare loss in gaming, though. SONY's been losing marketshare to everyone on the planet for the last 10 years because consumers wised up to SONY's efforts to try to steal as much marketshare as possible through takeovers (civil and otherwise) and buy-outs.
I don't think Microsoft and Nintendo need to "get better" at this. Microsoft is one of the best marketing firms on earth; forget software. They also actually have their arms further into the North American developer market than SONY ever has because of Windows; developers know that Microsoft makes it their job to make media coding relatively easy, because Microsoft knows that it's a huge market, and has been aware of it long before the Playstation was a glint in SONY's (and way back then, Nintendo's) eye. Now if only they could make a more reliable console, instead of something slightly more resilient than what SONY puts out.
Microsoft's greatest forté is the spin, and they will use and abuse that to their advantage. Forget gameplay, for them it's all about the hardware, the looks, the sounds; gameplay and even QA do take a the back seat, as MS (and unsurprisingly, SONY) showed last gen, and th current line-ups for all new-gen systems looks inferior to teh previous gen's efforts.
Nintendo has always been good at gaming; they've just never been that great at market targeting. Marketing itself, yes, but finding the proper target market median, no. However, the Wii, like NES and SNES before it, doesn't need any marketing like the last three consoles they put out has. Nintendo has finally rediscovered that groove.
Nintendo and MS will surely tear an even bigger chunk out of SONY's ass this generation - they did that last gen, too. While SONY came out the victor, it was a phyrric effort; they won on the conditions of having more ground, and yet all they did was lose territory last gen to the new guy. I'm not sure if Nintendo actually incurred any losses, but I doubt it.
By the end of this generation, even if SONY comes out ahead, they'll look pretty haggard in comparison to their competition, I think.

It's amazing how many people here think they're masters of marketing. Sorry to break it to you, but seeing as how the PS3 already has all of those things, the 360 isn't one-upping anybody. The PS3 will have bigger hard drives available and the smaller chip isn't a concern the average consumer is going to have.
the ps3 may be outselling the 360 at the same point after launch, but at this moment, more 360s are being sold than ps3s. And that is a very bad thing. the 360 has had a while to establish its user base and sales should really have trickled off a hell of a lot more. Moreover, the ps3 is brand spanking new and given all the hype sony fabricated (or hype that was created, depending on your point of view) one would think the ps3 would be selling way better than it currently is. Simply put, tis not.
people need to recognize that sales are sub-par at best, and that a system that already has its established userbase is STILL outselling the hot new piece of tech on the market.

So you think it's smart business for MS to release yet another version of the 360 to make the early adopters feel cheated??
 @ you
Early adopters cheat no one but themselves. I'm not sticking up for Microsoft -as a matter of fact, this will be a condemnation of everyone but Nintendo; Early adopters got burned last gen because the hardware they bought was junk. A very goodly portion of purchased PS2's and XBox's were replacement units, iirc. I have a 4th generation XBox (v 1.3), which doesn't have the same problems of previous ones. It most certainly may have a bad PSU (haven't had any problems yet, but it doesn't mean I never will), but I don't get DDE's anymore.
Thing is, Microsoft has better customer service than SONY. That isn't saying it's good though. It's just not abysmal.
Early adopters always get burned because at the least, what they buy is usually junk. But yeah, what MS is doing is bull. IMO, they should just issue a firmware upgrade and adapt the part to the hardware. Of course considering how many people got burned the last time they did that...anyway, I won't be surprised if there aren't any more class action lawsuits.
Anyway, early adopters a necessary evil; I mean, I'm not going to let my wallet play guinea pig.

Not to mention the fact that Sony is not a poor company. I doubt we'll see Sony or MS going anywhere for a long time.
