Sony can't win.

Nintendo are dominant in Japan, Europe, and America. DS sales are a worldwide success story, but at least you find buy a DS. Wii is sold out everywhere.

This is for teh Europe. Game is the most prominent UK videogame store.

It the same story in any shop you go in. It is impossible to buy a Wii.

• Amazon.co.uk: Sold out, used Wii's selling at 50% markup.

But I thought that Playstation 3 was going to win this generations console war? What are Sony going to do to accomplish that?

the wii isnt that great i havent played mine since i... well i cant even remember the last time. they pump out so many games and only like 2 of them are good. nintendo is going to let it go to theie heads and do something really stupid to mess it up.

I didn't know there were still people like you left around here. All the others who said the Wii will die in a year have either left or changed their tune and faced the reality that Wii is here to stay and will most likely win. 

The Wii will probably be replaced by a better Nintendo console in 5 years, which means the PS3 has 5 years to make up the gap. RahnAetas

PSP is the graphics handheld.  DS is the innovation (or "gimmick") handheld.

The PS3 is the graphics console.  The Wii is the innovation (or "gimmick") handheld.

DS is still selling out.  People who like the DS' innovation (or "gimmick") will more likely get the Wii because of its innovation (or "gimmick").  I'd take a "gimmick" which improves gameplay and sells consoles over a graphics console with bad gameplay.  (note that I will get a 360 because of its games.  I don't care about its graphics.)

I would have said Super Mario Galaxy for innovation, or Umbrella Chronicles for tried and tested fun. NiGHTS 2 has been in development on and off for five years, originally incorporating motion sensing on Sega Saturn.

What alternatives are they? The PC? Thats the only thing I can think of... We all new PC will have the better hardware but will flop due to pirating. Gears of war has pretty much used up all of 360's juice..

Corruption will own souls. The third parties fell through on the opportunity Nintendo gave them to make waves in the FPS mindshare. That leaves Corruption as the make-or-break game for the concept. They've had an extra year of time which to attempt to nail it. Of course, this is colored by a huge pro-Prime bias. SMG is of course worthy of mention but there's already lots of Mario love so I thought I'd go with teh Metroid.

More like, sometime in the next two years it will get to start its shelf life.  If you think that current trends vis-a-vis the PS3 can continue for any duration beyond the next six months and yet believe that the PS3 will start to sell better against a Wii successor, you're living the impossible dream.  If the PS3 doesn't reverse its downward sales trends it won't even make it through this generation, much less into the next.

Possibly something working from the technology base of the Cell will be in play as a successor to the PS3, but it will be a new product, much as Wii is not the GameCube.

I totally agree with this.  Which is why I mention Metroid much more than SMG.

I didn't know that Retro insisted on and thought of the nunchuk :o.  Metroid is one of my (if not most) really anticipated games.Iyethar

Come on.  Sony has created every system to last a long time, hence the inclusion of blu-ray in the PS3.

If they wanted to win the first 2 years they would have not included blu-ray but their system is built for the long haul.  The question should not be if the PS3 will last 10 years, which it will, but rather the question should be if Sony can catch up to the other systems after it finally gains momentum and 100 million PS2 owners decide to buy a next gen system.
