Quote:

"We no longer have any inventory in SCEA warehouses. All inventory has been purchased and shipped to retailers," Sony's Dave Karraker said in an email.

"We don't have visibility as to if that is on their store shelves or in their warehouses at this time. However, based on inventory reports from our retailers, there is ample supply still left in the channel."

On Tuesday, it was revealed that Sony's online inventory had been fully depleted. In July, after slashing the PS3 price by $100, the company said that the now discontinued 60GB PS3 would be available for several months. At that point, Sony alluded that they may also reduce the price of the $599 80GB PS3 to $499 as many analyst expect.

at their online store.

every retailer around me still has stacks upon stacks of 60g PS3s. most used game stores won't even buy used ones right now - no joke. i had to go to 3 different stores to sell my PS3.

Don't worry, you'll still be able to get a 60GB through Xmas at least, majority of people buying next-gen consoles for the rest of the year will be Xbox 360 for Halo 3 and company or Wii for Mario and company

Whats the point of having an 80GB model? What possible difference would 20GB make on a system which readily allows third party hard drives?

it was basically just a SKU shift. they added 20 gigs (pennies) and removed the emotion engine (dollars) and kept the price the same.

yay for 20 gigs more storage + software emulation of retro games.

oh - and i can't wait until they release the newsixaxis and everyone will have to pay 200$ to replace their old controllers

You forget, the 80 gig model doesn't have backwards compatibility hardware. So you gotta deal with software emulation. Just another kick in the junk.

So technically they never had a price drop, it's still $600 dollars.

exactly - there were many threads about this when the so-called price drop happened.

LOL I have to say, this is one time where I'm glad I don't live in America. This whole removal of the emotion engine thing sucks, and we in Europe never had it anyway, so you ought to stop complaining.

I think that the 80 GB drive was cheaper. The orginal Xbox used an 8 GB drive and 10 GB drive, but limited the 10GB to 8.

So they take the EE out, put 20 GB in, and charge $100 more for it?

Wouldn't taking the EE out alongside a price drop have made a hellavalot more sense?

fast, think about this, PS3 8gb is dropped to 500 the same price as the 60gb, in order to do that the remaning 60gb PS3's will also have to drop in price ex 400

so if u wanted a PS3 now might be the time

i bet sony is still making them in the backround.

if they were smart they would keep making them but dont tell any1. that would help some1 who is shopping for a blue ray play stag it on sight because its 100 bucks cheaper.

thats the same plan nintendo is useing atm. holding wii`s back and when ppl are shopping for a next gen game system they see a wii and snag it on sight because its cheaper and it might not be there next week when they go to the store...

but i dont think sony is to smart or else the 20 gig ps3 would still be out and be 400 bucks:P

you're probably right actually - my point was just that the major cost saving was apparently from removing the emotion engine.

Pure software emulation is a nightmare, especially going from something as radical from the PS2's design.

P.s. Wanna read about Blu-ray losing two major movie companies?

why would you sell a ps3? Why did you even buy one anyway, doesn't sound like you enjoyed the system?

They've removed the ee chip on march 23rd and switched to emulation. So it wasn't really used for a while now.

Motorstorm was released 6 months ago. Hardly "creeping up on its first birthday".
