LOL. I thought about posting this when I saw it.

I was gonna title it something like "Sony forces kids into slavery", or something like that.

At the center of the conflict is the unrefined metallic ore, coltan. After processing, coltan turns into a powder called tantalum, which is used extensively in a wealth of western electronic devices including cell phones, computers and, of course, game consoles.

Maybe you should take your own advice.

They also said it was a "rare" metal that is used in capacitors. And if you didn't know just about every electronic device on the planet has them.

I Just now read about this...Literally right before I clicked this site. It is extremely sad but more than likely sony didnt know the metal was killing the miners. Im sure if sony denied being involved with the congos, they would only deny it to prevent any mayhem, so to speak. I doubt sony flatout knew it would kill the miners though. Plus, from what I read, they are now denying any business from there pertaining to that metal. Unfortunate things happen....with everything.

Sony didn't REALLY force them into that form of slavery.

If you read the article right, you would have seen that the DEMAND from A LOT OF OTHER COMPANIES had also forced the element to be in high stock.

from the article: tantalum, which is used extensively in a wealth of western electronic devices including cell phones, computers and, of course, game consoles.

Remember the big technological boom of 2000?....thats where this all started.

So yes, Sony was a huge factor in this, but it wasn't the only factor.

If you really want to put the blame on someone, its us, the consumers who killed those people. WE demanded the product. WE used the product. WE bought the product. WE forced it into development for constant supply. WE killed those poor slaves.

End of story.

Actually, it's mostly consumer electronics from DVD players to mobile phones to HDTVs. It's typical anti-video game spin. Did you notice them mentioning the rise of DVD players in that time? Or the growing demand for mobile phones? No.

I'm surprised some are trying to spin this as a Sony thing.

At least Kotaku defends Sony & gamers from the mainstream media

http://kotaku.com/5028998/whats-all-this-playstation-wars-business

We're just curious as to why someone would call this a "PlayStation War", when really, PlayStations had very little to do with it.

See, it's believed that the war was at its worst when the price of tantalum spiked between 1998 and 2001, due to "increased demand". Yes, that timeline coincides with the roll-out of the PS2. But come on. Tantalum is used to make personal computers and mobile phones and DVD players, the sales of which dwarf those of games consoles. 1998-2001 happens to be the time when DVD players first hit the market, when mobile phones first became common place and the internet hit the big time, bringing increased PC usage with it. It was those market conditions that increased demand, not the building of a few million PlayStation consoles.
