The official story: "In an effort to promote video game God of War II, Sony held an event last month in Greece with topless women, knife throwing, and a freshly slaughtered goat according to according to The Mail on Sunday."

Sony fires back! What do you make of their press release? I put the main parts in bold.

"The media event for the PS2 title God of War ll took place in Athens, Greece on 1st March. Approximately 20 journalists from European countries attended the event from a variety of gaming and life****media - although none were from the UK.

The event was a theatrical dramatisation with a Greek mythological theme and, as part of the set dressing, a dead goat was provided by the production company from a qualified local butcher. Following the mainstream popularity of shows such as 'I'm a Celebrity, Get me out of here' a series of challenges were set for the journalists. The 'warm entrails' referred to in the invitation and in the Mail on Sunday article was actually a meat soup, made to a traditional Greek recipe and served to attendees in china bowls direct from the caterers. There was never any question of journalists being able to touch the goat, or indeed eat the soup direct from the body of the goat, as one report has alleged. The goat was returned to the butcher at the end of the event.

The article in UK Official PlayStation Magazine (OPSM), from which the Mail on Sunday article was sourced, was written by a journalist who did not attend and done on the basis of the invitation for the event, which employed a degree of hyperbole in order to encourage attendance - the journalist chose to take it as fact!

The photograph was one of many supplied to the magazine to provide a balanced view of the event. Unfortunately, the article was sensationalised and focused on a picture that was unrepresentative of the wider event. When we saw the article for the first time on Thursday of last week we contacted the Publisher of OPSM who accepted that the article was not appropriate for their broad audience. On Friday, before we had received any contact from the media, they agreed to remove the centre page article before the magazine goes on general sale.

We recognise that the use of a dead goat was in poor taste and fell below the high standards of conduct we set ourselves. We are conducting an enquiry to establish the circumstances behind the event in order to ensure this does not happen again. We also apologise to anyone offended by the article in the OPSM (subscription copies were sent out ahead of street date)."

Source.

So, what do you make of their press release?

And all of the facts come out. Hehe. Seriously though, Sony made a mistake allowing that spread in a magazine. But the party as a whole was probably a blast. I wish I had been invited.

no thats covering your butt, they just found a straw to grasp at and blame the journalist. it doesnt change the fact this was a PR nightmare and got mud in thier faces and a press release going "buh buh the journalist man sensationalized it!" isn't going to save them much. the damage has been done.

Dont understand how you can compare killing a goat for food or for entertainment purposes. I think there are some logical and ethical clashes there. Regarding Xbox 360 Elite lauch, it had nothing to do with anyone who already purchased an Xbox as they are still enjoying the largest library of next-gen games.

Who said the Elite launched horribly?

Gamespot?

you?

Seems like it was received with some success, i read a few reviews saying its a great buy, especially for late adopters. Obviously no one was expecting million+ sales due to the fact most early owners don't have $500 to fork over for an update with new color.

Good to see the record get set straight. The original report seemed rather sensationalized.

That being said, it was still a very boneheaded move by Sony. And I'm not talking so much about the goat, but I'm talking about putting it into the Official Playstation Magazine. Why would you do that? A magazine that children read? Sure, lets put a beheaded goat in there! No way that can backfire!

Using any dead carcass for a publicity stunt is incredibly stupid and ignorant. It may have just been "a goat", but if it was  a dog or a cat a bet lots of people would think different about it.

I know people eat animals but we as humans should act like humans and not barbaric morons.

Also I know some asian people eat dogs and cats , but If I ever seen them do it I would go bananas and do something I can't mention on this gaming forum.

exactly what I was thinking. How Sony fans see this as a exploit in which to badmouth sony is beyond me. No company which is as rich and as well known should ever use a dead carcass at any type of event. Especially one where the press is there. Sony is seriously off its hinges. Just because there is a butcher doesn't mean its ok or even remotely fine to have a party where a dead carcass is present as a media stunt.

How many of you would have an upscale party at a butchers shop with dead animals?

Using any dead carcass for a publicity stunt is incredibly stupid and ignorant. It may have just been "a goat", but if it was a dog or a cat a bet lots of people would think different about it.

I know people eat animals but we as humans should act like humans and not barbaric morons.

Also I know some asian people eat dogs and cats , but If I ever seen them do it I would go bananas and do something I can't mention on this gaming forum.

I wouldn't care if they had a room full of slaughtered puppys and kittens. They are just animals.I don't care what happens to them.

I wonder if you really care about your own life or others if a room full of dead puppies or kittens is meaningless to you?

And no I don't believe in animal rights at all. I hate PETA but on this one their right. Its Like MS having a bucket of real poop to celebrate the release of Conkers Bad Fur Day. You see, its completely and utterly ridiculous to have a dead carcass at a Sony event like this. Its such in bad taste.

Goat > you

People like you make me sick. It is an animal. People are better than animals. Period.

What makes you better than a animal?
