Okay, so let's talk about the PS4 OS. I'm not even going to talk about things like Themes or custom wallpapers. Those are nice to have, but ultimately superfluous. I won't talk about folders or better methods to organize your library and apps- those are necessary, but as it stands now, the PS4 doesn't have enough content to make them necessary. I won't even talk about non gaming related features like Blu Ray 3D playback or DLNA and MP3 support.

No, instead, I will talk about two very important games related features. Two features that were heavily hyped up and promised ahead of launch. One of these was one of the primary billings Sony was making for the PS4. That feature is flat out broken, and simply does not work.

The other feature isn't even in the OS yet.

Let's tackle them one by one:

1. SHARE

Sony. Fix. The damn. Share function. Already.

Share does not work. It does not work as advertised. Sony's promise for Share was simple- It's always recording videos in the background. Constantly. The last 15 minutes of your gameplay are always there, so if something super cool happens during your game that you want to share with everyone, just pull up the Share menu, save, and then share. Pretty awesome, right?

Or it would be if it actually worked. It doesn't. Automatic recording is absolutely broken. Pull up Share after 15 minutes, and your most recent gameplay simply won't be there. The function is broken. Either it will give you some gameplay it recorded months ago, or it will give you the first fifteen minutes of your current gameplay session, at which point it stopped recording, or it will have the last fifteen minutes, but no option to Save/Share, which prompts you to exit the menu and re-enter it, at which point... that gameplay is gone, replaced by whatever minuscule amount of gameplay you had between the two instances of pulling up the menu.

This was supposed to be a big deal. They announced it as a major feature at the PlayStation Meeting, where the PS4 first debuted. Their official website lists this as a feature for the console, describing how it is supposed to work. One of their major pitches for the PS4 pre-launch was the always sharing function. But it doesn't work. It's broken. And Sony hasn't even acknowledged the problem yet.

2. SUSPEND/RESUME

Suspend/Resume was another feature announced right at the PlayStation Meeting. Then, right before the console's launch, it was announced that it wasn't going to be made available at launch, and would be available at a later date. Since the PS4's launch eight months ago, Sony has not added this feature in. Yoshida took to actually apologizing for the feature's continued absence. That was more than a month ago. Since then, Sony has announced another major firmware update, that... still doesn't have Suspend/Resume as a feature.

What makes this frustrating isn't just the fact that this is yet another unfulfilled promise by Sony, but that this shouldn't be a difficult feature to implement. Microsoft does it with the Xbox One. Nintendo manages it on the puny Nintendo 3DS. Hell, Sony itself has it working better than I have seen it working on any other machine on the PS Vita. So why is this still missing on the PS4?

---

Since launch, Sony has released ten firmware updates. None of them have added a single major feature, except one- they have all been 'stability' updates. And that one major update? It added Share Factory, which is almost a taunting insult to the injury, because Share itself still hasn't been fixed.

In this same period, Microsoft has released four major firmware updates for the Xbox One (off the top of my head), and Nintendo two- and all of these updates added major functions both manufacturers promised would come. They did come. No such luck with the PS4.

The worst part is Sony's callous attitude in dealing with the problem- they don't acknowledge the features are missing. They refuse to release feature rich firmware updates. They refuse to keep users updated. There is no transparency.

They need to get off their ass and add in all the missing features that they promised, and they need to do it soon. But maybe they should start with these two first. Because these were major billing points for the PS4. Sony advertised the console with these two points as major system features. And they either aren't there, or don't work as advertised.

What exactly is the PS4 OS team doing anyway?

Ah the Share feature is probably the most amazing thing a console every introduced! the quality is mad great its even better than the $90 Roxio i bought last generation.

Let me give you an advise instead of relaying on Auto-recording why dont you just click the Share button twice and record manually? honestly i didnt even know about autorecording till this thread, what i been doing is easily click the Share button TWICE and it starts recording the gameplay of any game for 15 minutes and once its done it will straight up tell you ( Gameplay Recorded ).. want to record again? simply click the share TWICE again i dont see why thats so hard.

heck you can even edit that video and cut or add anything using the share factory and copy to a USB stick.. i been a PS4 owner for like 2 weeks and half now and man im loving the share feature so much!

example:

Loading Video...

Now in terms of Resume and Suspend yeah it was supposed to be t launch but hey they did say it was coming.

Share works fine for me, but I've had the machine since launch to practice.

@finalstar2007: Because I'm not clairvoyant? I don't actually know if my next fifteen minutes of gameplay will have something cool or emergent that I want to share with my friends? Manual recording is not a fix for Share- it is half the feature. The actual point of Share was that it always records what you do in the background. So if something cool and unplanned happens during gameplay, you can share it. That doesn't work.

You can't plan for cool things to happen. You can't decide that you will have a completely unpredictable, cool kill in an online match. Or run into some hilarious bug in an open world game. it doesn't work like that. Stuff like that happens, and you want to share it after. And Sony promised that you would be able to with PS4, except they haven't followed through on their promise.

'Ah the Share feature is probably the most amazing thing a console every introduced! the quality is mad great its even better than the $90 Roxio i bought last gene' is what you said. I will agree when the damn thing actually works.

I am glad it works great for you. However, for countless other users, it does not. It is therefore a problem Sony needs to fix. It is also one that they haven't even acknowledged.

Then maybe click the share button BEFORE each match starts? dont tell me you havent thought of that yet?.. I been doing this with Destiny clicking the recording feature right before the match starts so that later on i can edit all the cool moments into one video using the share factory.

The share feature works like a charm dude but you just dont know how to use it.

if your playing an online game click the recording button before every match starts that way you can cover anything you do and what ya know maybe something cool will be recorded too?.. most online matches dont even last more than 15 minutes or if its a fighting game 5 minutes is more than enough. i dont understand why thats so hard

Sony's still racking in Money of PS4 sales.

If people like the system as is, why fix it?

(clearly not how it should work, but still it took WiiU about 2 years to get to where it's at, so take it what you will.)

I've never had any problems with my PS4 aside from Watchdogs locking up once and maybe another lockup somewhere since release.

TROLL!!!!!....j/k....it seems to be the "go-to" insult around here for anyone wanting to discredit someone. Sorta like the little snowflakes over at the Official Xbox forums.

@finalstar2007: Sure. Now I have to start the record function before each match. Which is great, but what about, say, a single player game like Watch Dogs? Where I'm just ducking around in the world, and I cause a pile up of fifty cars that I want to share by accident? You are again missing the point, and making excuses- you can come up with turnarounds in some instances (an MP match is short enough for this to be feasible if you remember to start a manual recording every time, or maybe a single level of Resogun), but what about other kinds of games? Should you always have to start recording, stop, and then restart every 15 minutes> DO you realize how asinine that is? Do you realize that is stupid?

Do you also realize- and this is sort of a big deal- that Sony is falsely advertising?

Such vitriol....

Is your console up to date? Share had a bug with that was messing recording up in a way that sounds like what you're describing, but it was corrected via update awhile back now. Since the update, I've had zero issues. Hit the button and it just works.

Suspend/Resume will be a "nice to have" feature when they have it working flawlessly. At least for some. I can't think of many instances where I'm in too much of a hurry to wait the 2 seconds it takes to save, but maybe you're different. A buggy beta version like the XB1 released with would be useless though, so I consider it best for them to wait on the final version. Sony's confirmed the feature is still being actively developed though, so what's the problem? You have so much need of the feature your game play is being negatively affected? I don't think so.

When I think of a company with dire needs to their OS I think Nintendo. They are still missing vital features and structure that have become standard across other platforms half a decade ago and longer. Features that really do negatively affect a gamer's game time. Talk about sitting on your ass...

It still doesn't work. It might be working for you, but it's not working for a very large amount of people. It is also, as mentioned above, a problem going unacknowledged.

Your response to these complaints- and this is totally fair- is based on your personal experience or expectations. Which is great, but there are others, maybe, who do want Suspend/Resume, or do want Share to work as advertised, and find that it doesn't. It is completely fine to raise a ruckus about features we were promised, but are still missing, if we feel those features are vital enough. Nothing I outlined in the OP is an unreasonable expectation, I'm not being 'vitriolic' because I expected a word processor that is missing. I am being pretty damn pissed because features promised to me at launch aren't there, they don't work, and Sony isn't telling me when they are coming.

Don't get me started on the NintendOS. Two years and still no folders...

To be fair, Microsoft has always been pretty good with updates. If you look at how the Xbox 360's interface has changed and how much the PS3's interface has changed, Sony isn't really effective in that area in console making.

But that aside they should have these features up because I want to get a PS4 in the future.

If you actually had a ps4, you'd know double clicking the share button forces the recording to start right there. And even if I didn't do that, any time a hit share, the last15 minutes were there. Sounds like user error...as there's lots of errors when concerning GS mods. :)

The OS runs great. Silky smooth. Share is killer as is share factory.

Stay jelly. :)

@Mr-Kutaragi: If the Save/Suspend feature is on the Vita, why has is it been almost a year since the PS4's release and they still haven't put the feature that was touted at the launch party back in Feb?

I think the PS share feature takes some practice, because it works for me. Say something cool happens in your game, simply hit the share button once, and the PS4 will save the last 15 minutes of gameplay for you. Once you get back to your game simply hit share twice and the PS4 will start recording again. Just dont double tap the share button again thinking the PS4 will log you shares, because it wont, it will simple start the recording cycle again.

Of course it has that, that was one of the main points they advertised.

I know there are workarounds. They are just cumbersome, don't always work, and piss me off because the functionality isn't working as promised.

If you actually read the OP, you'd realize I'm complaining about the fact that the system is supposed to be recording video in the OS always... and it doesn't.

Nice to know who reads these posts on this board, though.

It's not important to you? Great. There are many people it is important to (such as the poster who posted right above you). Please stop thinking that just because you don't care about a feature, it's okay for it to be missing, particularly since Sony made a commitment to that feature's inclusion in the system.

The world does not revolve around you- if the PS4, as it is right now, with its missing features and workarounds, works for you, that's great. There are others who are not okay with that, who have every right to be frustrated and raise the issue, particularly since this is a $400 machine that they bought, that Sony made unfulfilled promises for.

When you say Share works fine for you, are you saying that you can pull up the Share menu at any time, and the last fifteen minutes of your gameplay are always there, to be saved or shared? That this happens every single time?

I haven't used it much but from my experience it worked fine and i had footage of exactly the moment i wanted. it auto records your gameplay and just go to share to view it.

Interesting, and that's cool.

It hasn't worked in my experience- and when I was trying to find fixes for this online, I found that it hasn't worked for a lot of people. If the feature is not working consistently, Sony deserves to be called out on it until they at the very least acknowledge the issue.

@charizard1605: and I don't seem to be the only one in here stating they've never had an issue with the system not recording constantly.

Pics or vids of this problem you had, or never happened.

Hell, pics of your ps4... Or didn't happen.

@shadowchronicle: I've explained myself perfectly. GS mods are full of error. I can't help with that, unfortunately.

Are you kidding me? i just freaking tried the NOT click the Share button twice and play randomly for 2 or 3 minutes, i hit the Share button ( Once mind you ) and bam whatever i have done since the logo screen was recorded automatically ( you click Square button and it saves the video ) so oh my god the Share feature just got better! it recorded everything automatically from the logo screen to the loading screen to the game..i didnt even know about the auto-recording feature :D

TC you just introduced me a whole new feature lmao

its either a bug with UR system ( seems like thats the case since a couple of people in here already confirmed its working with mine working too ) OR you dont know how to use it.

simply try it randomly right now, click share button and then click Square button to save the clip.

Well, unfortunately for you, this is a goddamn widespread issue. Here's a link to the PlayStation website full of people complaining about it.

And ell oh ell at your 'pics or it didn't happen.' I'm not going to take pictures of me trying to record footage and then it not showing up- how the hell do you show that in pics anyway?

I have previously established my ownership of the PS4. I believe it was in one of your threads when you used to post as XboxDone74. I have no compulsion or need to do so anymore. But if you're really curious, feel free to check out my PSN to confirm it for yourself :)

Well if GS mods are full of error you must be one yourself. Welcome aboard.

Also feel free to converse with me if you're mad about all the alternate accounts you made that were banned.

Once again, this isn't a problem just I am having. I've posted this link twice already- there's a pretty massive thread about this on the PlayStation forums.

Once again, just because it works for you, please stop assuming it works for everybody.

Is bandodging allowed now or did XboxDone not get banned and he just moved on anyways?

I did a quick research and seems like the most recent update fixed some bugs for the Share feature so are you sure you are up to date? which games are you trying to record? if its watchdogs i wonder if Ubisoft blocked the auto-recording for that game.. i just tried it with Infmaous: Second son and it worked... maybe its up to the devs kind of thing idk

if you have infamous try it out right now, if it dosent work then its definitely a fault with the your own system?share

update 1.75 should hit sometime next week so here's hoping it will fix that issue for you

don't people get banned when they have multiple accounts? Or are they banned each at a time as they do the offenses?

was Sniper banned? Because he's been posting in a new account for a while now.

@lostrib: I'm afraid I can't discuss users' moderation histories publicly. Suffice it to say, if the user in question had violated the ToU, s/he would not be still posting.

Also, ban dodging is a bannable offense, yes.

It still doesn't work. It might be working for you, but it's not working for a very large amount of people. It its also, as mentioned above, a problem going unacknowledged.

"Very large," really? I hadn't heard of anyone bringing it up in so long I had assumed the situation was resolved. Considering we are all on "identical" hardware, with identical OS's there shouldn't be too much wiggle room. Are we absolutely certain we aren't dealing with user error, or misunderstanding? Have you set it up and understand what to expect from, say, a long press, versus a tap or a double press?

And yeah, you're right. Sony mentioned these features, they tried to get people interested in them, so I totally get the idea people want them. And I'd be a lot more agitated about the delay if Sony hadn't been communicating with us about their continuing work to bring them. When I combine the limited usefulness of suspend on a console with the knowledge Sony is actively tying to get it done, it gets hard for me to get too upset. Stuff happens like this all the time, to platforms far and wide.

When I get upset at Sony, it's over the idea that I still can't reorganize my library section, or remove items from it. Or watching Nintendo release an update that brings user controlled account migration - a very important and long demanded feature - to the console in a way that solves almost none of the issues account migration is desired for in the first place.

Those are worth ranting about. We need these features to be there. Not having them limits our ability to enjoy our games. And we have no idea when either of those will get fixed - if ever! Suspend? It's in the oven, just let it cook.

Share didn't work when I tried it on BF4 so I just quit using it.

There should also be a way to organize your games. I hate having to scroll all the way across the screen.
