Hi, I don't post here a lot but I wanted to share this with someone.

I've been thinking about the issues with the Blu Ray reading speed. The major problem is that the PS3 uses a 2X Blu Ray drive, which is a lot slower than the 360's 12X DVD speed. This slow read speed has created some challenges for developers this gen (still not as much as trying to cram all that game data on to a standard DVD). Using a 4X Blu Ray drive in the PS4 would solve this problem. The reason 4X wasn't used in the PS3 was due to cost. But production costs go down over time, and it will be feasible for Sony to use 4X on the PS4.

MS wont be able to get away with using Standard DVD's again because games will just be too big. They have really only a couple options. One would be to revive HD DVD for the next Xbox, but the current HD DVD readers have the same speed issues BR has. So MS would have to develop HD DVD drives that could run at the same speed as Sony's 4X BR. Because MS would have to sink huge amounts of money into research and production it wouldn't be cost effective in any way for them. The only other real option for MS would be to get Sony to license BR to them. The only thing Sony needs to ask themselves is:

"Would I rather reap a bunch of money from licensing technology to my enemy? Or go into the next generation knowing I'll have no real competition?"

Theoretically MS could develop their own media format, but that would be way more costley than even reviving HD DVD.

I am aware that MS and Sony are considering creating a Blu Ray attachment for the 360. But actually allowing MS to use it inside a console is something entirely different.

I know next gen is like eight years away but it's it's still something to think about.

Hold on a second. Are you trying to say the next generation will be won and lost based on load times?

Sony hasnet won anything there in dead last in the handheld market there software and hardware sales are always bad so they are FAR from winning anything.

If anything sony has to climb out of this grave its been digging since the psp and ps3 released.

And No loading dosent decide who wins a war.

I'm saying it will be won because Xbox games wont be able to fit on standard DVD's.

sony is going to win because of disc drive speeds? lol, that's not going to help that much. sony has to get through the disaster that is the ps3 first.

It may be possible that by the time next gen consoles come out theres already something better than blu-ray, so Microsoft and or Sony would just use that. And even if there isn't I'd think Sony would likely licence blu-ray to Microsoft for their next console anyway. After all its extra money in Sony's pocket.

Sony has a huge stake in the BRDA, and yes the BRDA can restrict who licenses their technology. Not to mention, Apple is in the BRDA, and guess how much they like MS?

Provide a link saying sony has a huge stake in blu-ray. Plus if sony restrict licenses then you won't be seeing Windows compatible with blu-ray at all.

Yeah sure. I have around 25 X360 games and all of them are exactly one DVD.

If you turn all on engine cinematics to 1080p HD DVD and it will be like 10 hours of it, you need HD DVD. But nobody except some japanese devs is so stupid

Sony has a larger stake than most, and a good portion of the BRDA are Japanese companies that would show favoritism to Sony. Sun and Apple are also involved in Blu Ray, and both are big competitors for MS.

Sony would be better off licensing Blu-Ray. There's no way that MS would just drop out of the competition because of disk space, nor Nintendo (have you forgotten the 800 pound Mario in the room?).

MS wouldn't need to develop their own, just license another DVD media format with more storage, as they're out there already.

As of right now, DVD (aka Toshiba+) is still winning And DVD will be good enough for the mass market for another 10 years. In that time digital, net downloads will mature and be the next dominant format

Sony really has the only next generation game console in the PS3, as of now the technology is ahead of the PC in what it can do. Look at the Stanford University program of F@H and how much the PS3 has been able to donate to this program via the owners of the PS3 shareing there PS3 with this program (as of now the PS3 has donated several times more computing power of all the Windows, Mac, and Linux systems together. And then another university is using the PS3 to do research on some science processes. Then not long ago the US Air Force started using the PS3 for something that they are not shareing what there using it for (they are also using the motion sensing technology of the Wii for something). The 360 has nothing really worth while to offer other than there synic software that really is something that has been around for a while but just not very reliable in the past and hasn't yet been fully proven completely.

To back up your theory, since it became evident that HD-DVD would not overcome Blu-Ray, MS has really being throwing their full media and publicity weight behind Digital Distribution. It wouldn't be too far fetched to think that that is how they will likely proceed in the future, though DD seems a long way off imo.

In regards to your TC post, devs use a technique involving creating lots of redundant information on the disc meaning that a piece of information that is read often can be pulled off from multiple points on the disc. This is possible since the Blu-Ray has so much extra space that it can be made incredibly redundant. I imagine this may be one of the reasons why people say that Blu-Rays are hard to ruin through minor scratches.

But they would pay royalties to Sony.jimm895

microsoft made one of the codecs or something for blu ray, i think they get royalties from blu ray.

I dont think so, they arent listed here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc_Association

 @ Wiki.

Read, straight from MS. Link.

Another 360 supporter that believes everything only when it comes from M$. If you do some cheking M$ is not even part of the Blu-Ray group that developed the Blu-Ray technology.

Ok, how about this. Link.

Or this. Link.

Oh, and what about this. Linkage.

Anything else Mr. SONY has more money than MS? (Looks at sig)

Yes, Blu-Ray uses VC-1 encoding primarily. MS doesn't get royalties from Blu-Ray directly, but since it uses a MS encoding, they get royalties from that technology.

Blu-Ray discs incorporate more technology than just the disc format. Don't they also use a form of Java for multi-media content? Who supplied the DRM technology?

Any media format is truly a mismatch of interwoven technologies.

Edit: Removed quote chain.

[QUOTE="GTASA_Cartel"]I am aware that MS and Sony are considering creating a Blu Ray attachment for the 360. But actually allowing MS to use it inside a console is something entirely different.goddamn_

Yeah sure. I have around 25 X360 games and all of them are exactly one DVD.

If you turn all on engine cinematics to 1080p HD DVD and it will be like 10 hours of it, you need HD DVD. But nobody except some japanese devs is so stupid

But it is the multiplat devs that are already saying that the space on dvd's are limiting their games when they develop on the 360.... this is a fact, not something up for debate.

However, I'm pretty sure that this issue will be worked out in the design of their next system, whether they end up paying royalties to Sony or not.

Also, for all the obvious haters in this thread, the sales trends for the PS3 are SIGNIFICANTLY better than the 360's, and have been for the last year. This also is fact and not something that is debateable. The PS3 is doing well now, so what... doesn't mean you can't still enjoy your wii or 360, get a life.

I know that, you know that, but apparently Mr. SONY has more money than MS didn't know.
