I think it means Sony Corps as a whole and not just SCE.Infact I think Sony still loses money on evey PS3 sold.
Still if this is true I find it suprsing as I thought sony's electronics divsion was tanking across the board.
sony is profiting now. its has the ps3 for $299, the psp, and the ps2 is still selling like hotcakes n ps3 exclusives sell millions dont forget bluray movies, sony got money in the bank

Of course they make profit. But this is about PS3 only. A front on which they've lost money.

The PS2 is not selling like hot cakes. Last financial statement we got from Sony showed them losing huge money off declining PS2 sales. I know its almost 10 years old but this statement is still wrong. Also, Sony doesn't have a gaming division, like MS, I believe they have an entertainment division now.

Not exactly in terms of the ps3, they are still losing 40$ per unit sold, and their exclusives aren't exactly blockbusters. And the blu-ray? that is shared with 12 other companies from what i recall, so i wouldn't be surprised if their income that part too was minimal

You have got to be kidding me. A entertainment division? Sony computer entertainment is pretty much their gaming division. And 1 billion profit is actually good considering all the exclusives have sold incredibly well and FF13 sales.

There are actually 20 members in the Board of Directors(Sony included) in the Blu-Ray Disc Association, and a few dozen contributers. So, Sony definitely isn't the only one make profits from Blu-Rays(and they owe a $50,000 Annual Fee to the BRDA to maintain the medium)
Guys before anyone goes nuts, its great news that Sony has turned (or at least started to) the ship around, but the profits are less likely to be from huge increases in PS3 revenue, as Sony having restructured (hence the big losses from the last 3 quarters) and have slashed costs and the holiday quarter. Not saying that the PS3 isn't showing a profit, but I just want to calm anyone who is going to go overboard and then have to deal with later "pwnage" threads from lems.
EDIT oops at work sorry and forgot to add this is for the whole company not just the gaming division (which has been merged with other ones and doesn't report individually anymore)

I'm positive they merged with their computer and music divisions. Look it up. I also said I don't think they made 1 billion in profit. 1 billion profit is quite good imo. Also, again don't over exagerate, no PS3 exclusive has sold incredibly well. They have all done good, there still hasn't been a blockbuster release.
Too bad they had to lose almost all the profit they made from the PSX/PS2 eras in order to turn a profit this gen.

Not the music, it was PC's (ie Vaio), mobile phones & walkman divisionThen why did they recently push back their estimated date for turning a profit back to 2012? donalbaneAnnual, this is for the 3rd quarter

Sony as a whole may be profiting, but the Playstation didn't contribute anything to it. In that case, Microsoft never had a five billion dollar deficit with the original Xbox because they make like a $10bln profit every fiscal year.VadameeHow can you know what the PS3 contributed before the figures are released? Besides as I said, there are no longer indvidual numebrs for the gaming division.

Glad to have been of help ... I get to crunch numbers all day long and see lots of semi-useless info doing it surfing lolThis^. I know all of you think the "trey" is the greatest thing ever but as of RIGHT NOW i bet sony consider it a total disaster. From a dominant 1st in market share to being behind nintendo and microsoft. This is a huge failure. Not saying they cant turn it around though, the tide seems to be changing. Also, hotcakes...LOL.Too bad they had to lose almost all the profit they made from the PSX/PS2 eras in order to turn a profit this gen.

Put the profits made from the previous products into the new products. Sure the PS3 has not done as good as they initially hoped but that doesn't matter if the PS3 will end up being profitable in the end.
I mean it's not like Nintendo has any money left form the NES, SNES, N64 or GC generation.

Of course, all that really matters is profit... but if that's the case then wouldn't the original Xbox be one of the biggest flops of all time?Too bad they had to lose almost all the profit they made from the PSX/PS2 eras in order to turn a profit this gen.

As far as the original xbox MS was just getting thier foot in the door and never expected to make money on that system. Call it the biggest flop i dont care. What you dont seem to grasp is the concept of market share. Used to be if someone was going to buy a game system it would almost assuredly be a sony system thats not the case anymore. remember i said as of right now. It seems the ps3 is really starting to sell. Please Log In to post.
