Another E3 Winding Down, Plus a Quick Clarification
+ Posted by Dave Karraker // Sr. Director, Corporate Communications
Well, we're in the home stretch! A new format for E3 brought a new look and feel, a few challenges and most importantly a great opportunity to show off our wares for all PlayStation platforms. All the planning, preparations and hard work has paid off into what was a great E3 for SCEA. Congratulations to everyone involved in making that happen! And a thanks to all of you guys for your positive comments regarding the press conference and what we showed there. I know Jack was checking out all the comments on his post and really appreciated your feedback. I hope you've enjoyed seeing our games via the trailers on PlayStation Network. I just wanted to also let you know that yes, we hear you, and we are working to make those great games you saw into more interactive content and demos.
One quick thing before I head to the show for the last day. I just wanted to clarify something. I've seen a lot of posts this morning related to the 60GB SKU and the comments by SCEE President David Reeves. As we announced this week, SCEA's product offering in North America consists of a 80GB PS3 available in August and a 60GB PS3 available now for $499. We will have ample supplies of both models to meet the needs of consumers for the foreseeable future.

It's confusing. Either Hirai doesn't know what he's talking about, the blogger which debunked Hirai doesn't know what he's talking about, or the new 80GB SKU is a limited edition offer. In any case, Sony have millions of the 60GB model just sitting on store shelves and in warehouses. If Hirai is indeed correct, this move will still boost PS3 sales by a few million. They're already selling out in places.
I disagree. I think the PS1 and PS2 prove SOny knows exactly what they are doing. The problem is that, with the PS3, Sony did something the public wouldn't support (expensive console) and now they are desperately doing anything they can to keep afloat in hopes of riding it out.
They know what they're doing...the public just happens to disagree with what they're doing. Now it's too late. They've spent to much money to get to this point to just give up.
I don't think they'd discontinue the 60GB. It was the most popular model anyway. And Now they are Selling that dumb 80GB. So let me get this strait.
They say that selling 20 GBs for 100 Dollars is outragous. But they forget one thing: You are at ZERO GB of storage to start out with the 360. and If its such an OUTRAGOUS price,THENWHY THE **** ARE YOU DOINGIT TOO!?!?!?! Also, an 80GB Drive only cost 54 bucks, and if you subtract the 47 the 60 GB cost, then shouldn't the 80GB PS3only be 7 dollars more?
Leave it to sony to Charge me 100 dollars for 7 dollars of HDD space
wait why more storage if u have BRD.is not like u gonna be saving gameplay films on ur system.the 20gb system was fine and that was definetelly the one i was gonna buy after the price drop but guess what they stop production making the ps3 the most expensive out there stillOldParr
well not really it seems the blu-ray drive is too slow, and alot of developers are throwing stuff on the hard drive to keep load times down. I really don't know how bad the problem will get but it's possible that you would only get 8 or so games until you filled up your HDD. There's also the question of downloadable media being available on the ps3 which if users use will need more drive space.
Mostly the size upgrade is marketing since most users are fairly dumb they don't know 2.5 hdd prices are dropping very fast, and sony can upgrade each console to 80GB at hardly any cost, and users will think they are getting a much better value. Sadly sony has yet to realize it doesn't matter what they do to the console very few people will buy a $600 game system, hell most think $400 is effing rediculous.
He only says they have "ample supplies of both models to meet the needs of consumers for the foreseeable future",not that either is still in production.Going by the lackluster sales of the PS3 that could just as well mean they have warehouses stocked full of the 60gig model but have still discontinued it.Another E3 Winding Down, Plus a Quick Clarification

nice rant but here's some corrections. depending on which version of the 360 you buy, you start out with either 0gb, 20gb, or 120gb. they are charging $100 for 20gb of space (i wonder where they got that idea *cough* ms *coug* ). true, one good thing about the ps3 is user upgradeable hdd, unlike ms who charges $180 for the 120gb hdd, that's a f---ing ripoff! but sony is also tossing in a free copy of motorstorm. honestly though, what the hell is up with sony? when it was announced that the 60gb ps3 would get a lower price, the sales of the console went up 2500% on amazon and it was number 1 in the dvd player section (a place it shouldn't be because it's a console not a dvd player.) now that the consumer has a choice of buying the cheaper sku, they want to take it away and charge the same $600 price? wtf? it's like sony is trying to lose the console war on purpose. sure ms has 3 sku's (4 if you count the limited edition halo version) but at least they give people a choice. after being humble at e3 this year, they are starting to show their true colors again and those colors seem to hate the consumer.
what really sucks is that according to reeves, the 60gb supply will run out at the end of the month.

not only that, but europe will not a see a price cut (not that we are either, it's more of a fire sale.)

Better then Nintendo's plan to destroy gaming as we know it.

Not only does this have nothing to do with this topic. It was stupid and uncalled for and just plain damage control. Way to let the fanboyism shine through.
[QUOTE="swanlee"]This whole mess is complete insanity, if you are thinking of buying a PS3 wait until this mess gets cleared up. nnavidson
If you're thinking of buying a PS3 and want 100% backwards compatability, but one now.
Yeah, I'm a little confused about this. Heard the same about the emotion engine as well. Does that mean future PS3 models won't be equipped with PS1/PS2 chipsets and the emotion engine? Can someone clarify?

It means that the ps3 will use software emulation to play ps2 and ps1 games, instead of using the emotion engine, the chip that ran games on the ps2
What the heck are they smoking? So we get rumors of a price drop before E3, Sony denies them We get a Price drop for the 60GB PS3 and a new SKU at 599$ at E3, basically not a REAL price drop as the PS3 Launched at $499 and $599. But Sony forget they ever had the 20Gb SKU and calls it a price drop anyway. We get a SCEE rep saying the 60GB SKU will be dropped leaving us with a $600 SKU We get a Denial of that from SCEA saying they are not dropping the 60Gb SKU Then we get a video of Kaz saying the 60 GB SKU is no longer in production http://atvs.vg.no/player/?id=10235 ""[We do not] have a 2 SKU strategy in the US, we learned very quickly customers respond better to having one SKU than two." "We dropped the price on the 60GB model, as you know that model is no longer in production, once it's no longer on store shelves it will just be the $600 SKU."" Ok can someone please just close the doors on Sony, they have no freakin idea what they are doing.swanleeLol, I know, it's weird. You realize though that at some point during all of this debacle every head in Sony's games division **** their pants collectively. lol good stuff
