Sony insults Halo 3 on Wikipedia

On the Halo series page at Wikipedia, an edit originated from Sony Computer Entertainment casts aspersions on Microsoft's Halo 3. In the Halo 3 section of the Halo page, Sony added "(Halo 3) wont look any better than Halo 2." (See the first and second story images attached below.) Since then, the Halo page has been corrected and locked from further vandalism.

The WikiScanner discovery is also reported on Wired's 'Threat Level'. (See Alternative Sources.) The report and IP address have been checked by Wired senior editor Kevin Poulsen, (i.e., see the third attached image for Poulsen's comments; "Sony insults Halo 3" is the second report after the Walmart report.)

Finally, the forth and last image was taken from a 'Whois' search at the RIPE.net database for "217.18.23.2", the IP address recorded by Wikipedia as having edited the Halo page. The query shows that 217.18.23.2 is registered to SCEE (Sony Computer Entertainment Europe) Liverpool Studios in Great Britain. The result also shows the studio's physical address, phone number, and email address.

So a bored Sony employee trolls Halo and messes about with Wikipedia. Got some sort of connection to Mikes and Jockeys too.

This is obviously some crazy plot by Sony to do as much damage as they can to the Halo 3 launch. Or it could be just a bored employee at Sony's Liverpool Studios who just happened to dislike Halo.JLuke360

Do they edit to get the info on THEIR products out there (as they want the story told)? Or do they edit pages of their competitors and disparage their products? Like editing the wiki on the PS3 to say how it really doesn't have any Exclusive AAA games and the graphics at best can barely compete with the 360?

Depends on what you mean by power. If you want to run folding @ home, then the PS3 is the way to go. If you want to play great games that look the best on a console then 360 is the most powerful. It's all relative. Most understand that folding @ home is PS3's forte, which is very admirable that Sony and the buyers of the PS3 are trying to cure cancer. It's probably a lot more noble than 360 owners trying to play games.

Wired.com reported August 14 that Virgil Griffith, now a computer science graduate student at the California Institute of Technology, created an application called WikiScanner that tracks edits that have been made to Wikipedia articles. Griffith's tool exposed the IP addresses of employees at several corporations who were making edits to not only their own companies' pages, but also those of competitors. Just a few of the corporations listed include ExxonMobil, Apple, Microsoft and Wal-Mart.
