New PlayStation Protection Plan provides added peace of mind:

With the PlayStation Protection Plan, you can extend the same coverage from the original manufacturer's one-year warranty for one or two additional years. The pricing includes all shipping charges and repairs, which are performed by PlayStation-trained service technicians at SCEA-authorized repair facilities. The PlayStation Protection Plan is available beginning in May 2010. PSP owners can also choose the Accidental Damage Plan, which provides coverage for cracked-screen damage in the event of an unexpected drop. See pricing below:

  • PS3 - 1-year extension ($44.99) or 2-year extension ($59.99)
  • PSP - 1-year extension ($29.99) or 2-year extension ($39.99)
  • PSP Accidental Damage - 1-year ($39.99) or 2-year ($49.99)

Considering that Xbox 360 offers a 3 year warranty for its most common issues, having to pay $60 to get two addition years of Yellow Light and DRE coverage for your PS3 seems a little disingenuous at best.

Yay for plans I don't need. The sad thing is the average consumer will buy into this no doubt.

MS's 3 year warranty only exists because of their astonishingly high failure rate. The longer warranty was an attempt to persuade the public that they're buying entertainment electronics, not gambling away $300. I wish my Wii and PS3 had three year warranties, but not at the cost of a 40% failure rate.

OK, so you just payed 300 dollars for a gaming machine but 60 is too steep a price? And then when you get YLOD you complain and WE have to read it.

Actually, dude, your post seems a little disingenuous. Considering that the Xbox 360 has been one of the most faulty console designs in history and given that it has cost Microsoft well over a billion dollars to repair all of the broken consoles....also considering that the 3 year warranty extension was basically a PR fix for all of the hilarious PR propaganda and hand-waving by Microsoft in the initial stages of responding to the problem.... Also considering that the Playstation 3 has been sold at a loss by Sony since release and has always had a 1 year warranty since launch compared to the initial 30 day manufacturer warranty of the Xbox 360 (worst in the industry at the time).... I'd say it's not even remotely disingenuous of Sony to offer this considering that they have offered, since launch, a vastly more reliable product vastly below cost.

Sony's warranties are just horrendous. The 360 is just as bad in that it breaks all the time, but then again at least you get it fixed for free. I imagine if it weren't so prone to failure they wouldn't do it for free; in fact i remember my launch 360 coming with a leaflet saying it only had a three month warranty or something ridiculous like that before you had to start paying to get it fixed. I've had both a PSP and a PS3 break however, and both times they wanted me to pay to get them fixed.

My PSP just flat-out stopped loading games after two months of owning it. They refused to repair it for me unless i pay £120, the excuse being that my warranty is void if i buy it outside of the country which i live in (and i bought it at an airport coming home from a vacation). This makes no sense as it's a region-free handheld device, but that was their policy.

Then my PS3 broke because of THEIR firmware update and they again wanted £85 to fix it. Luckily i managed to download a third-party update and install it myself which fixed it. So yeah, Sony are really lacking when it comes to warranties.

The thing is, with the PS3, if it doesn't break in one year it's not likely to have any manufacturer defects. Protection plans are often a waste of money. Of course, if you have to use it, it's a great investment, but that's a big "if."

To be fair, MS was affronted with a serious hardware problem, followed later by a serious error (E74). Sony's hardware failures are within reasonable parameters this gen (hardly like last gen). Sony has no reason to implement such a long and expensive warranty, and in fact, the standard electronics warranty seems to be sufficient enough.

This is the case where people have skewed memories of how things happed. MS didn't launch the 360 with a 3 year warranty.

Looks like it was a 90 day warranty. Only after a ridiculously large percentage of failures did they extend it to a year.

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6163599.html

It wasn't until that wasn't enough, and it took awhile, that they extended it to 3.

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6173633.html

90 days isn't usually the case for electronics, so I find that a bit strange. A year is usually a good measure of manufacturer defects. Yes, some people get unlucky with these things, and that sucks, but a small percentage of unlucky individuals does not a widespread problem make.

I'd like to add that I owned a launch 60 gig, a 20gig Pro model 360, and Wii. The only one that had any problems was the Wii out of the box (power adapter). That problem was a result of the power in Iraq rather than the hardware. I sold all the systems and bought an 80 gig, non-BC ps3. All the previous systems I owned, and the "new" one are all still going strong.

So, luck definitely plays a factor.

Fail. I only get replacement plans from Best Buy, etc.

Much better than paying a company. For one, all I have to do is walk in to BB, say "Hey, my system doesn't work" and I get a "go ahead and get a 360/PS3 (depending on which I'm returning) and we'll ring it up and you can go"

No hassle at all, just a quick swap. Beats waiting two weeks or more for a refurbished system. You also pay half the price.

Luls, you lucky.

On-Topic: I would be interested but when I bought my PS3 recently, I was offered an extra years warranty (by the store) for £20 and it looks like the Sony 1 year extension is more expensive. Still, it's a good move by Sony, since the PS3 is rather expensive (not in comparison to the other consoles, just in general) I'm sure many people will be willing to get that bit of extra protection.

I have to hand it Sony. Now that Blu-ray players are so cheap they need to entice people to keep their PS3. Also, what easier way to make money than to offer insurance, takes the finacial ease off a system bleeding them dry. Well done.

I would have considered though if my PS3 was still under warranty but oh well, if it breaks going to replace with a new OPPO Blu-ray player.

I don't care what the TC says "PSP Accidental Damage - 1-year ($39.99) or 2-year ($49.99)" Is probably one of the best plans I have ever seen for a portable system.

[QUOTE="themyth01"] They should provide a longer built-in warranty likes MS does. lundy86_4

Only expensive if a lot of their systems break which seems to be happening to a lot of 60GB models. They didn't do it with PS2 either, not even after they lost a lawsuit over it.

UnnDunn
its 3 years for 1 specific error which is so common that they have no choice but to make it 3 years.
