Wow, the PLAYSTATION 3 is truly amazing indeed. From its awesome Blu-Ray disc drive to its exceptionally powerful Cell Broadband Engine and Reality Synthesizer GPU working in perfect harmony, it is evident that Sony intended for the PLAYSTATION 3 to go beyond all expectations.
I recently had a chance to sit down and watch a video of a new game developed exclusively for the PLAYSTATION 3 by an impressive developer, Naughty Dog, called Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. The video I'm referring to is the first 10 minutes of the game, including both cinematic scenes and some gameplay. After I watched the video, I was in complete disbelief and shock. The beginning cinematic was so immersive, I thought I was watching a movie. One of the head developers for Uncharted: Drake's Fortune mentioned that the game was only possible thanks in part to the expansive canvas Sony has provided through the Blu-Ray disc medium. I finally understood what he was saying. When the pirates began boarding the ship and the actual game kicked into gear, I thought I was dreaming.
Sony has taught me that our eyes can be very deceptive. I honestly thought I was watching a movie and wondered what Nathan would have to do to get out of the current situation he was in. The pirates were boarding the ship and all he had was a gun. I was more scared than he was, it was as if I was really on that boat. This is where I slowly began to realize that Sony truly has built a supercomputer and their expectations are VERY high, much higher than its current competition, the Xbox 360 from Microsoft.
The level of immersiveness I found while watching the first 10 minutes of Uncharted: Drake's Fortune were enough to convince me that Sony is blurring the line between videogaming and reality. Those wierd commercials Sony put out early on during the release of the PLAYSTATION 3 make sense, Sony is now taking you to a world where there are no boundaries, you can be an assassin, an adventurer looking for lost gold, a dragon, a football player, basketball player, soldier, a 17th century heroin, and everything in between. Sony really is providing a level of immersion border-lining virtual reality.
What's scary is that this is only the first year of Sony. Imagine the line between gaming and reality in a few years with the PLAYSTATION 3. I'm excited, are you?
