Latest reports say Sony is reducing the price of the PS3 by 100 bucks to 500 for the 60gb PS3. They are releasing a 80gb PS3 that comes with Motorstorm. I have to say that is a horrible idea.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/main.jhtml?xml=/money/2007/07/09/bcnsony109.xml

All they have done is replace the models. There is still a 500 and 600 dollar PS3. This comes down to a basic phycology. If your spending 500 dollars on somethingmost peoplewant the best. If there are two models available then people are almost always going to wait and buy the more expensive model. I'm sorry to tell you Cows this may make money for Sony due to the production cost but it's really not going to help sell PS3s much.

Well atleast now the $600 is bundled with something, the 60gb at $600 had nothing with it.

It's not that freaking simple. The people who decided on this price cut and 80GB have had years of college and real life experiance. They know what they're doing. What have you had? System wars? On the other hand, you might be right. But sony should definitly be given the benifit of the doubt...

I agree, and although we hate to admit it, sales rely on the casual gamer. Sony is already having trouble reeling them in with the $600 price tag. When Joe Anybody walks into Wal-Mart to get a system, he's not going to know the difference between the 60g and (rumored)80g device, or why it's important. He isn't thinking about downloading HD movies from the store, he's thinking of GTA IV. In the end, Sony is not being wise. Microsoft has a dual machine tier as well, but they're marketing it well. The Pro is for normal people, while the Elite is for the hardcore. But it is also a bit confusing as well. I don't know, but I don't think all of these options are good. The casuals are seeing all of these different versions and stuff, and then they gaze on the one, small, innocent Wii that they're neighbors are having a great time with. What are they going to buy? I'll give you a hint, it begins with W and ends in ii.

They are looking at revenue. They will probably make a profit on the 80gb PS3. Seriously how much more could an extra 20gb's of hd space and 1 blue ray disk cost? 10 bucks max? They are producing the 80 gb PS3 to increase their profit but honestly it's not going to help them sell PS3's by doing this.

I do have a minor is psychology btw.

Look at it this way. Instead of getting the 20gb PS3 for 499 you'll be getting the 60gb PS3 for 499instead. The 80gb is just an extra option. you really don't need that much space.

DONT SAY THAT!!! Its a secret, amongst those who use reason and logic. what he doesnt realize, sadly, is that the 20gig sku was "crippled" in the sense that it lacked built-in wifi, and 40 gig difference from the 600 sku.

However, there is no hardware differences now. Both the 60 and 80 at are the same playing field. except that now you have an option of an extra 20 gigs. if you dont want that.. then whats so hard to comprehend, you buy the 60 gig. you want more space then the 60 gig? buy a seperate harddrive. how effin hard is that to understand.

what i have come to realize is that consumers like the topic creater will never be satisfied. they always have something to complain about... tis sad but true.

I don't think the average casual is going to wait for the 599 ps3 to drop when he can get the cheaper version. There is a such thing as asking the store clerk whats the difference in each version. Casuals do ask question you know.

You might as well say it was a price cut considering that the 60gb was 599 now its 499. Thats a cut in price.

the average casual gamer isn't going to be buying the ps3 even at a 500 price point. these causal gamers you speak of will wait for 199 or 299 price point (299 considering it will be great for the hd buying masses).

another thing you fail to realize and many more like you is that the 80 gig sku isn't set in stone... not yet. it will come out in august and as they have us believe by the photo, it will be "LIMITED BUNDLE" ...

as of now the ps3 has only one sku and it is priced at 499. until august it will be another story, if the 80 gig doesn't sell as well as the 60 gig (judging the statisitics and analysis of the month of july) then they could always get rid of it since it is afterall, a "Limited Bundle"

When a potential buyer goes into a store they will still see the $499 and $599 price tag for a PS3. This is still too expensive for a gaming console. This is why the PS3 is dead last.

Nintendo introduced NES models that were more expensive than the Action Set...

The 80GB Playstation 3 is just a bundle that includes a few extras. The core system is basically the same as the 60GB except for some storage.

The 20GB Playstation 3 was lacking Wi-Fi and memory card readers. Big difference. Wow, this concept is so easy to grasp!

I dunno about you guys, but the PS3 in the UK has been going for way, way under the original asking price anyway. I dont think this price cut will really do anything, as i know for a fact Game and Gamestation are already selling it at a discounted price and have been doing so for some time. Unless they cut it even further.

I'm not going to debate this with you except to say that there are phycological studies out there everywhere that talk about buying attendancies. It doesn't matter that the there isn't a lot to be gained from the extra 100.They could packagea PS3with kitty litter and sell it for 100 dollars more and it would still sell. People are naturally attracted to buy the more expensive of the two systems if there are two models available.

It just takes the PS3 back to square one I think. Its the same thing as when they had the 20Gb SKU out. You still have a PS3 out there thats $500 and $600 and a 80Gb model that really isnt even needed just like the elite. I dont think the price drop will help Sony tremendously especially now and they are still losing money. I think they should of done it around holiday season when they have enough good games to push the hardware and make the price drop seem more appealing but thats me.

The 360 and wii are getting alot of very appealing games in the coming months and holiday season I wouldnt be surprised if MS had a price drop on the premium or even the core and bundled it when with something like GeoW or a special halo3 bundle.

We will see what happens I think it will still be pretty much the same for sony.

OMG just be quiet you don't know what you are talking about! They didn't buy the 20GB PS3 because it lacked ALOT of features but the 60GB pS3 at $499 has EVERYTHING. They will want a stand alone PS3.

Interesting. That might be a cultural thing. The PS3's in the US are 500 or 600 dollars period. Do you all negotiate price in stores in the UK?

Yeah that's true but even so it still isn't much of a help anyway, seeing as the RRP of a PS3 over here in the UK is £425 ($856!!!).

Even if you get it for around £360, that's still the equivalent of $725 so either way we are getting the raw deal over here in the UK (£360 is the absolute cheapest I've seen the console available in stores).

Yeah I agree with you, it does take Sony back to square one. But atleast with the Elite you was given 100 gigs more, hdmi port, and a hdmi cable for $80 more. With the 80 gig, you just get a game and that extra 20 gig for $100 more. :|

In reality there is no PS3 price cut. They started out with$499 and $599 models, now they have $499 and $599 models. Where's the price cut?

ReverseCycology

The 60GB model went from $599 to $499. There is your price cut. Wow, I can't believe people can't grasp the concept of simple economics.

It just takes the PS3 back to square one I think. Its the same thing as when they had the 20Gb SKU out. I think both the elite and this new ps3 sku is just not needed. The elite though could have beaten the PS3 out of the water if they had added that HD-DVD player. I personally am not interested in bluray or HD-DVD but for people out there looking at the PS3 and the Elite with the price the elite runs at and the games behind the 360 along with the huge hard drive et cetera the HD-DVD would have been I think the trump card to really hurt sony.

Technically it's the same price as the 60 gig is now.As M$ didn't lower the Premy pack price and then release the Elite @ the old Premy price. Sony is giving you a game and a extra 20gigs for free..... think about that for a second.

AGree, average joe sees the same pricepoint as when the PS3 launched. As far as marketing, how do you overcome that? When people already thought PS3 consisted of stuff that people didn't want or need, yet here the excuse is going to be "but you get more stuff"? Bad idea and I"m losing faith in Sony's ability to turn the tide. That lineup of titles better be something special because the price cut IS NOT going to drive sales.

TekkenMaster606

Hey I liked the 20gb I dont need wifi or memory card readers. Hell by now if they kept the 20gb model it could of been $400-379 and I would by that to go along with my 360. The one reason besides bluray that I didnt like the 60gb model was the fact that it came with all these damn features that I either didnt want or wasnt going to use. The 20gb was simple and was better than the crappy core 360 model.

You're an idiot! The 60GB version is fantastic for $500. No one has to buy the 80GB version unless you want a bigger HDD. OMG 360's is only 20GB. Get real!:roll:casey7672

For who? The rabbid fans who were just holding back for that $100 price cut? If that was the case they would have been purchasing the $500 version at launch......according to Sony no one was purchasing it (and from the sales figures, no one was purchasing the $600 sku either).

Everyone who can afford a $500-$600 machine pretty much purchased it already. If the intent was to gain ground on the Wii and X360, a price cut in the range of $150-200 was needed. If they still had the old $499 sku and it was reduced to $399, that would indeed drive sales. My guess is it would sale out quickly (for that sku).

Firelore29

Interesting. Sony President says otherwise...and....this is from Sony.

According to Bloomberg in an interview today Chubachi, in regards to the PS3 price cut, said, "We have no immediate plans of now."

To each his own I guess. I love the extra stuff. It's the natural progression of the Playstation platform. The PS1 brought us CD playback with visualizations, the PS2 added DVD playback and online, the PSP has a slew of extras and the Playstation 3 is just Sony continuing what it's always been doing.

It's not that freaking simple. The people who decided on this price cut and 80GB have had years of college and real life experiance. They know what they're doing. What have you had? System wars? On the other hand, you might be right. But sony should definitly be given the benifit of the doubt... munu9

thier also the people that said it was TRUE HD and 4D! i bet college taught them that too right

People like to label a console with the highest given pricetag as the ACTUAL price... I've learned this being in system wars. People will say the 360 costs $480 before they'll ever mention that there is a $400 and $300 SKU. Sony even picked a semi-flop game to put in with the console... nice way to try and pull a "Wii Sports." At least Wii Sports was somewhat impressive.

The same price for 20 gigs which i probably wont need and a game i dont want? Sounds like a steal to me! Its still $500 and $600. Back to square one for Sony...
