Not going anywhere, they basically patented a dual layered disk of any kind, the only reason they are going after Sony is because it's one company, who are you going to sue for dual layered disks? It'd be like trying to sue someone because they infringed your copyright on the pencil.

You'd laugh at a pathetic law suite culture causing millions of people around the world to be essentially screwed out of hundred of $'s?

Honestly, some people are disgusting.

It's not going to stop the manufacture of the PS3. First and foremost, the litigation will take years to complete. Secondly, there's the question of whether or not the case will even be heard -- Blu Ray technology has been on the market for years, and Orinda certainly sounds like a Patent Litigation Company. Finally, Blu Ray is too important to Sony, so if they're even slightly worried about losing the case they'll settle.

Actually this would be good....then developers would actually make some exclusive games using it's true potential for 360.

Well they are, they said they are using most of it's potential with gears2, with the unreal engine 3 that very very well optimized for the 360 :P

And on another note, did anybody actually look at the patent?

The patent was filed in 1993 and published in 1995...why are they suing them just now?

Won't happen. Worst case, and I mean worst case, Sony settles out of court.

No major company like Sony or MS would allow a flagship product/technology to go off the market over a lawsuit. If need be, they will buy the rights to the patents, if they are truly infringing.

Probably because hmmm, some people aren't selfish bleeders who only ever think for themselves. I don't know, but that's an admirable quality to me, to be able to have empathy and not some blind hatred for people you don't even know anything about.

And yes, some people are still disgusting ;)

And upon reading the patent, I just noticed that this patent has nothing to do with the Blu-ray disks at all. It's a patent on recording and reproducing data on an optical disk. It mentions nothing about Blu-ray, and the term Optical Disk is so vague.

"This time, Californian-based firm Orinda Intellectual Properties has applied to the courts claiming that Sony has violated patent number 5,438,560, which relates to "an optical disk-shaped recording medium comprising a plurality of tracks ," filed in 1995 by Hyundai Electronics Industries."

any company making dual layered discs could be sued.

"Despite attempts from a number of companies to sue Sony over patent infringements relating to its Blu-Ray discs, all have failed."

They can sue whoever they want with this patent. But it's ridiculous because the patent doesn't point out a specific disk type, just an "optical disk". It only mentions the recording/reproducing of data on an "optical disk". If you ask me, this company just wants money.
