Peter Dille, SCEA's Senior Vice President of marketing also commented on the Elite, "We think every PlayStation 3 owner should have an 'elite' experience, which is why we include an internal hard drive and HDMI output in every PS3 we sell, along with the 50GB of storage capacity on a high definition Blu-ray disc."

Dille added, "Sony has been the strongest advocate of high definition as the future of next-generation gaming. This requires high-definition components, including HDMI output, and large storage devices to deliver and store all that rich and vivid HD content. Microsoft's announcement today not only legitimises Sony's PS3 strategy, it moves us closer to adopting universal standards in the area of high definition gaming that will benefit game developers and ultimately the end user."

Dave Karraker, waded further into the fray, claiming, "It doesn't increase their market share, by introducing this new SKU. They are graduating the existing Xbox 360 consumer up the scale - eventually eliminating the Core consumer - but this doesn't help them dip into the existing PlayStation 2 consumer."

Karraker added, "They've got the hardcore gamer - that's the 10-million figure - the challenge is how do you grow the consumer outside of the hardcore demographic. We don't feel like splintering your market further is the way to do that." Plus, he notes, "From the developer side, they [the developers] still have to develop for the lowest common denominator - the Core SKU."

Of course it has and as that Insomniac guy said in his 10n reasons why Sony will win the SYstem war most of its best games are Mature rated and alot of the games are similar and some what watered down/ Altered PC games. Left 4 Dead and Half life 2 and Rainbow Six spring to mind...

And that is bad? The hardcore gamer normally will spend the most money on games.

What is the PS3...Going to be for people wanting to feel good about themselves for a price tag?

Lol self owned yourself. Hes criticising both SONYS Laziness not adding a '$10 cable' and their hypocrisy in claiming that their console is HD outof the box.

This makes no sense whatsoever.  There is no difference between the core and the elite as far as developing games goes.

Yep. it is such an inconvenience to have to order an hdmi cable and wait a week for it. How can you claim to be all about hd and next gen and not even include it. It's not so much the price it's just that it's ridiculous it's not included.

You're bashing them about not including a cable? Just forget about everything else included cause we all know you can't be an advocate of high def unless you have hdmi cables in the box. /sarcasm

It doesn't make sense to include the cable when alot of customers don't have the need for them. On the other hand, they do include a way to recharge their controllers which benefits all of their customers.

I don't think 600 dollars is going to real in a bunch of casuals, but that's just me.

I would rather buy a 6 dollar HDMI cable to make my console future proof then have my console outdated in a year due to a new model coming out.

If you dont understand the ariticle they are saying the xbox 360s appeal is limited. It is only limited to their hardcore audience with their choice of games. Sony is saying theirs appeal to the hardcore, casual and technophile audience.

No, past playstations have hit a very wide target crowd. From adults to children to teenagers. They've had some very family friendly games and some very .. not so family friendly games in the past. SONY has always delivered a wide variety of different types of games, and they will do that with the PS3 as well.

I would like to remind people that SONY doesn't deliver these games, they merely say it can go on their console so SONY is doing nothing unless it owns the games designers etc.

$600 is not a casual price period. Neither is $500. Or $479. or $400. However $250-300 is. Price drops will lower the 360 and wii into the casual price range even more. PS3 priced itself out of its fanbase.
