"Sony Computer Entertainment's president of worldwide studios, Shuhei Yoshida says he thinks the platform holder was "late" in offering "platform-level" online support for the PS3. Speaking in the latest issue of Edge magazine, which has a big cover feature on the new PS3 Slim, Yoshida said: "I think we were late to offer the platform-level support, to make the online functionality work at that level. "We made the prior decision that you do not introduce the common centralised network names into every experience, so publishers made their own. That was fine at the start, but as more and more games have online functionality you need a unified approach. "So Microsoft took that approach in the last generation, and maybe that's where people see the difference when they compare Xbox Live and PSN." Commenting further on the state of Sony's online offerings, Yoshida said the company's making improvements with the new 3.0 firmware and further centralising the PlayStation Store into the PS3 experience. On social networking, Yoshida said that SCE "should really continue to look at adding and improving" features on PSN, but didn't rule out looking at integrating existing sites like Facebook. "Something like 300 million people already have accounts on Facebook. Why should we ignore that?" Of course just do what Microsoft does. Follow the leader Sony. Simply follow the leader....

They were late and still behind. Everytime they try and catch up, XBL has a major update that leaves PSN behind to play catch up again.

It was a bit shoddy at first and live was amazing but they built it up pretty nice for what is now. They need to get head sets out there though.

I'm surprised they're admitting their mistakes. lol

But its a good thing, in the long run they're just going to keep re-assessing their efforts and keep coming up with things that will make their platform better. Nothing wrong with that. :)

I hate to break it to you but really doubt PSN is getting crossgame chat this gen. I just don't see it happening. If it were possible, I think it would have happened already. What are they waiting for?

I think you had some typo at the end there I did not get what you were trying to say. I will say this PSN is a functional system and not as awful as the fanboys paint it out to be. PSN however in comparison to LIVE is laughable at best and having spent numerous hours on both my mind will not be changed anytime soon. PSN being free is not a gift to gamers they simply know that in its current form no one in their right mind would pay for it. Why do people have to defend PS3 and its obvious faults? I would never defend XBOX 360, Wii or PS3 blindly. It is OK to call BS on any of these big companies at the end of the day they want yours an my money, lets make them earn it! Sony was humble in this article because their arrogance would smell flase right now, they have dropped the ball to many thimes this gen.

of course online being free is not a gift to gamers, because it has been free since 2 decades ago for the PC... so what's your point? Live is better, yeah but by a small margin and a cost...you want the better online service...get a PC the best and you don't have to pay a dime for it. And Sony attitude has changed a big time since last year. For being arrogant and pretentious (mixed with some bad decisions) they went from first to last. Now they are back to what Sony used to be, being the slim a great example of this

if they continue to just copy xbox live then psn will always be a step behind, they should focus on implementing their own ideas into the service, home was a start..

as long as both services give you the capability to play games online in an almost lag free environment, then yes i will say that Live is marginally better than PSN. The fanboy is you for not admitting that both practically the same in terms of the actual online gaming experience and not adding the extra features that Live offers, because that is the one area where Live is better than PSN. Please care to explain where your argument would somehow be justified.

Late is better than never. Glad to hear it's definitely improving after the release of RE1/FFVII/MGS (I entered just January 2009 so that's how I saw it). :P

EXACTLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If this was IGN, i'll WUL you. I, as well, share this same exact feeling about live vs PSN. Live is better overall, but it's not nowhere near "leaps and bounds" especially with the essentials for online gameplay. We could look at the other "free" console online set-up, but we won't get into that

I would not be explaining anything simply restating what is by this point common knowledge XBOX Live>PSN.

Microsoft: "We got the online!"

Sony: "We got the proccessing power!"

Nintendo: "We got the people."

Honestly, Sony's online is superior to Xbox Live.

It's good that they recognize it. However, their challenge at this point is to build a compelling online experience based on a system where all its parts are not centralized. Unless that changes, they will always be at a disadvantage when it comes down to community-based features.

Nintendo: "We got the people."

Honestly, Sony's online is superior to Xbox Live.

How is PSN superior to Live? Please, enlighten us.

[QUOTE="Nonstop-Madness"]actually Krazy Ken wanted to make an online service back when the PS1 came out. MortalDecay
That's a flat out lie, since the PSX didn't have a modem.

Wanting an online service and actually acting on it are two different things

Great news. Now if Sony could start catching up a little faster we could get even more good stuff from both services, although I wish PSN would surpass XBL so that MS has to drop the price or make it even better. Competition is always good for the consumer.

My guess is Sony is currently working on a Live clone. Some service that is centralized, where everything is integrated. It makes sense, based on this article. They could be working on it right now, and either launch it later for PS3 users, or offer it next gen. I am also almost certain, that while Sony is doing this, if they are, they are going to realize how much money it actually cost to run, and maintain such a service like Live, and charge their users for it. As far as servers, bandwidth, and maintenance goes, PSN is nowhere near the size of Live, and cost Sony next to nothing compared to Live. If fanboys would realize this, they would understand why MS charges for it. But, it's easier for fanboys to bash something they don't understand. Both services are completely different if you look at the inner workings.

As it stands now, MS is always improving Live. Two times a year, they release updates with tons of new features. While Sony releases updates like 3.0. You'd think 3.0 would be a landmark update. I don't know what Sony was thinking when they released it. I think it's too late now for Sony to catch up at the rate they're going.

"On social networking, Yoshida said that SCE "should really continue to look at adding and improving" features on PSN, but didn't rule out looking at integrating existing sites like Facebook. "Something like 300 million people already have accounts on Facebook. Why should we ignore that?"

Of course just do what Microsoft does. Follow the leader Sony. Simply follow the leader....

ACtually its called competition. Its not like MS crated facebook. Its just how business works. I honestly dont give a dam about facebook.

But that;s your opinion. A lot of people would love to have facebook included into their gaming console. Also, it's not like sony isn't playing catch up to microsoft with rumours of releasing the stuff XBL had from a while ago like cross game chat and parties
