Everquest, PlanetSide and H1Z1 developer Sony Online Entertainment is working on multiplatform titles including Xbox ones.

Once a PlayStation exclusive studio, Sony Online Entertainment has been acquired by investment management firm Columbus Nova before getting renamed to "Daybreak Game Company."

"We are excited to join Columbus Nova's impressive roster of companies. They have a proven track record in similar and related industries and we are eager to move forward to see how we can push the boundaries of online gaming," said John Smedley, who will continue on as the studio president.

"We will continue to focus on delivering exceptional games to players around the world, as well as bringing our portfolio to new platforms, fully embracing the multi-platform world in which we all live," he added.

Later on, Smedley tweeted that he "can't wait to make Xbox One games."

They aren't Sony Online Entertainment anymore. They are Daybreak Games and are independent.

Furthermore they have a lot of shit to sort out before they start work on any new projects. Don't expect Xbox One ports of Planetside 2 and other games for awhile.

Cool. Thank you, Sony, for making games available on Xbox One that wouldn't be there because of Microsoft's ridiculous indie clause.

God, I love you, Sony.

A huge loss for Sony and PlayStation, a gain for their competitors. Also RIP SOE. Not sure how porting works, but since games like H1Z1 and Planetside 2 isn't even on the PS4 yet, I'm pretty sure they could squeeze the Xbox One version in there before releasing.

Yeah, that's what they said last week. This is old news in SW and was discussed...and they aren't Sony Online Entertainment (who did PC development). Also discussed last week was their name change to Daybreak Games.

As an independent company, they are smart to go as multiplatform as they need to bring in the $$$.

Good news for gamers though.

SOE was bleeding SONY so many failed projects so not really and their success on consoles is the result of having no competition....which is going to change in the next couple years.

  • Planetside 2 meh well newcomers need a proper tutorial + cash shop is pay to fix?
    • people like to praise PS2 but at end of day it rewards KDR over objectives so yep another COD in a way
  • DCUO grindfest, unbalanced, micro micro micro (good game though)
  • Everquest Next I'm interested in
  • H1Z1 negative response, but I think its Early Access

SOE doesn't even make f2p games, but falsely advertise as such (like most companies) and tries to function as one hence so much more red tape than usual when determining DLC prices. I say good riddance cuz their business model sucks and I don't think many console gamers are down with spending $15 a month and more just to stay relevant and not be at a disadvantage. Regardless, PS4 has the larger install base so more than likely preferential treatment will be PC> PS4> X1 and if ps3 any indicator you do NOT want to be last on their list.

When were they ever a Playstation exclusive studio? They've been making MMOs for the PC for years.

I agree Sony Online Entertainment wasn't that good and had many failed projects. Sony did a terrible job overseeing SOE projects. Columbus Nova buying SOE from Sony's neglect is probably the best thing for SOE projects. I'm not sure how many SOE employees are still around after the name change, most likely there's still a bunch since they said it would be business as usual so yes Daybreak Game Company is still very much SOE, but now someone who seem to be more focus than Sony are now overseeing these projects. These games are better off now and could be better now that it has a more dedicated team unlike Sony overseeing these projects.

LOL. More like thank you Sony creditors. They need to pay that debt off so things like this take place.

Not really for Sony which is why they sold it. SOE was definitely bleeding them, especially with two F2P games in the works that were very high risk projects. SOE hasn't had a hit in years but it does seem like H1Z1 will be. They have a huge user base already and its only alpha.

They aren't with Sony anymore and they were a pc focused studio in the first place. I have no idea why people think they were playstation exclusive.

they were mostly PC and some of the PC games had ports to playstation. notably DCUO, planetside and planetside 2 in the works as well as H1Z1. Personally I think their games suck (except H1Z1 which I haven't played) but DCUO and planetside are pretty garbage. Not a big loss for sony IMO.

One thing noticeable about Sony is when a branch of their company is bleeding and they are incapable on doing anything about it, they usually just fold and sell it. The Sony management overseeing Sony Online Entertainment were pretty much nonexistent. So SOE getting purchased is probably the best thing that happened to these group of people. SOE has projects and planned projects available only for one console and that is the Sony PlayStation. Sony had control over content for these projects and they had the final say if they wanted these projects to remain exclusive to their consoles. So now that SOE aka Daybreak Game Company are fully independent now, Sony loss every control they had over these content. Now the fanbase of SOE projects that were interested getting a PlayStation console because it had their games, gain another option of getting it on a different console now. That's a loss for the PlayStation and Sony.

um DCUO was an experiment that as of right now an anomaly.

You don't play MMOs on consoles period, but DCUO is one of the few games to prove that wrong nonetheless its just 1 exception.

I dont know FF14 numbers, but all you'll find is number of registered users which is BS.

MMOs on console still in early phase hence why we STILL haven't got Blade and Soul on playstion yet.

i have not messed around with SOE since way back in the everquest on ps2 days.

it seemed like they were constantly screwing the player base over and when i stopped playing it i was all "welp, i'm never doing that again."

and then i never did.

I expect the quality of the games to drop sharply.
