PlayStation 3s without PS2 backwards compatibility are missing the Emotion Engine, a chip Sony designed as the PS2's CPU. What if the PS3's cell processor could emulate the Emotion Engine? Theoretically, all PlayStation 3s would be able to play PS2 games even if a console didn't have the proper hardware. According to a recent patent filed by Sony Computer Entertainment in the US, Sony has the code and technology ready to do this.

This has got to be their next up for firmware 3.0 :)

If correct, the PS3 will indeed have the greatest game library EVER.

PS2 games will never count towards the PS3's library. That said, if it does a good job with emulation, I will totally forgo my current plans of buying a 60GB (or 20GB) PS3.

It's so damn obvious that they're bringing PS2 emulation. Make the official announcement already Sony! Or is it going to happen alongside the PS3 Slim? Hmm

They're probably waiting for PS2 sales to slowly fall to nothing.

that might be a while it sold like 40,000 less than the ps3 in latest npd didn't it? worldwide it's probably only a few thousand behind too each month. i predict the same as you, this will come when the ps2 stops selling

Maybe they are learning from their previous mistakes. Instead of announcing something and it takes forever to launch (like Playstation Home). they are going to kep us in the dark until it will truly come out very soon. Firmware 3.0 may hold ps2 backward compat. and also a new interface and app store or w/e. but Sony is gonna wait until they actually are going to release it soon, and not hype it up, when its 3 years away

Haha, nice. People always seem to forget the 80GB BC PS3's, they just remember the 20GB and the 60GB ones.

Bought Persona 4 right after hearing this a while back.

Can't wait to play it on the PS3, already put in 50 hours into the game.

OLD yes, nice? US/JP original 60gig = EE and GS chip on board. EU original 60gig = GS chip on board EE emulated. US 80gig = same as above. EE has been emulated since the 80 giggers and EU 60 giggers. Its the GS thats needs to be emulated. ppl and the media seem to be very confused about this.

Can we please stop with the "inanimate object says hi" garbage? It's really annoying. The general consensus is that PS2 and PS1 library > any other library.

Old news. But still good news. I'd love to be able to play my PS2 titles upscaled on my PS3, without selling the system for an original model. It would also give me an extra incentive to try out PS2 games I havent got to play - such as the recent Persona titles that I have heard and read good things about. Speaking of which, I still need to buy Killer 7.

In all honesty I agree i with you. I only ever dig out KOTOR from the xbox (although there were a couple i would have played again if MS had ever updated them)

Hopefully it will also have some sort of upscaling, added AA, or other resolution options.
