Sony Patents Method of Adding Trophies to Any Game (Including Classic Games)

Sony has filed a patent application (via NeoGAF) with the following abstract:

A method and apparatus for adding trophy support [to] games that do not have trophies without modifying the original game. The method and apparatus are used to detect particular disk access, use the detected disk access as potential trophy triggers in games, and recognize the triggers while a game is played. Trophies are awarded based on the triggers, and the awarded trophies are stored.

Very interesting... Very interesting.

Don't care for trophies, but cool.

A lot of those at the top of the leaderboard are actually multiple people, sonetimes whole teams, who each play different games offline and sync them up to the same profile. Kind of stupid in my opinion.

I see alot of workarounds to this so not a big deal.  Sony trying to patent something like this is a douche bag move though.

Doing this sounds cool. Wish Steam would do somehting like this.

Pateting it?  A disgrace, and yet another sign of the failure that is the current software patent system. This is doing what all of those old school trainers did bakc in the day on the PC. How the hell do you come out and patent that?

He does play an inordinate amount of games, but almost all the top trophy-earning IDs run with a team of people syncing up to the same account.

Sony has went nuts this year. They can do no wrong! Its is amazing. I just wish I cared about their IP's. But Sony is unstoppable right now.

Good, hopefully now they can add trophies to AC1 and COD4...two games this gen I wish had trophies that never got a patch.

I agree would also like to see trophy patches for Resistance, Ratchet & Clank Tools of Destruction, Folklore, Heavenly Sword, and Valkyria Chronicles!  

Gamerfication of classic experiences which whenever meant to have them in the first place, aye?

What could possibly go wrong? 

I'd care a lot more about trophies and achievements if they didn't throw in borderline (TOU censored) tasks. I wish more of them acted like digital checklists of 100% completion instead of all the stupid little ones you get thrown at you.

Ah remember the days when you actually did something difficult in the game or found a secret (etc etc) that the game actually gave you something in return for? Be it a unlockable character, item, etc to use.. This trophy/achievement system is such a half assed system.

I mostly agree. But I can see the appeal.

Holy hell!! this is actually really cool, i own so many PS1/PS2 classics on my PS3, so this would give me a great reason to replay them :oops:
