Didn't toshiba help in the creation of the cell. Also, this could be a way to get toshiba to Blu Ray?Warom
wow. way off. no bd player except the ps3 currently uses the cell. sony is selling the cell plant to toshiba because they can't afford to keep it (though they will have a stake in it) and want to focus on audio/video devices. period. GE did the same thing when they started to sell of subsidiaries to focus on its industrial products.

by the way, this shouldn't be news to anyone as sony themselves said a few months ago that they begin to outsource sell production to cut down on cost and to bring some money into it's failing semiconductor division.

TOKYO (Reuters) - Sony Corp. (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) will cut back on future chip spending and may not produce advanced chips used in its PlayStation 3 (PS3) in-house, a senior executive said on Tuesday, in a move aimed at driving the semiconductor unit's nascent earnings recovery.

It looks to be in their best interest but saying something like that without proof seems to be just a jab at Sony.

look up as i have edited the post to include proof of sony's failing semiconductor division. they are pretty much starving for cash in every division. talk about mis-management.

Yes, they are cutting back because they will lose less money overall but saying they can't afford to stay in the semiconductor business is a completely different notion. And I'd like a link saying they are starving for cash in all divisions as the article you posted talks of only one division.

i was abit overzealous on the sony going broke bit but they are on their way there in two places. the ps3 has giving sony a $2 billion operating expense (read: in debt by $2 billion) in the gaming divsion and the recent fall of sony in the lcd tv market from 3rd place to 6th place (losing out to vizio, now in first place.) the company as a whole in doing tremendously well pulling in 3x the profits as reported from last fiscal year due mostly in part to the jump in sales of the cyber-shot camera.

oh, btw, about the semiconductor biz, after looking sony financial statements, the semiconductor biz falls into the "other" category and makes only 4.2% of sony's overall sales whereas the electronics division makes up 66.8%. they, in their statements, even said they will focus on electronics, gaming, and movies, which also explains why they offered ipo's in their insurance company.
