"This year is the first time that we are able to cover the cost of the PlayStation 3," Yoshida said. "We aren't making huge money from hardware, but we aren't bleeding like we used to."

Didn't they say this last year too?

They just started making a profit off the PS3, which as they said is not that much, meaning a few dollars. So no, we won't see a price cut.

I'm just surprised they haven't increased the HDD size to 250gb in the standard models. That's really all they have to do to match the slim Elite, nothing more.

To be honest, I'm still using my 60gb launch PS3 without any problems. But I just think it looks bad when your competitor "appears" to offer more. Some window shoppers may just glance at the numbers, compare 120gb in the PS3 to 250gb in the 360, and come to the conclusion that the 360 Slim is a better deal.

It really doesn't matter. They have lost to much.

Its great they are back on track but is it worth billions and having a 40 percent drop in your company's stocks. I think a ps4 may be a hard sell to stock holders.

This is good news but it really IS too late, it's going to take a lot of time to make that money lost back; almost as big of a fail as the original Xbox was. Tip: Don't sell a console that originally cost 7-800 dollars to manufacture. Thank god Sony is such a huge company or we may have lost another great hardware company (cough Sega)

As it should be, no one wants a PS4. The PS3 has at least 5 good years ahead of it. Let's see where things are then.

some of you dont understand business. when a business takes a big risk like sony did like the ps3 its going to take a while to breakeven. it would of been since if sony was able to break even in 2 years or 3, but with slow sales etc. it was bound to take awhile. business dont run on the short term they run on the long.

how is it to late when the ps3 is still "young" do you understand what breakeven is. there not making any loss nor profit. they've already covered there loss its actually hard to even get to breakeven and it doesnt take a year to make breakeven maybe the Nintendo with the way the wii is selling. once they get above breakeven its pure profit . didnt ms take 2 or 3 years to make breakeven

Sony hasn't broke even this gen at all, the MANUFACTURING COSTS have now broke even and is barely profitable. Sony has dug their gaming division in a hole this gen and can now start to climb out. Microsoft dug itself in a 4+ billion dollar hole last gen added to the billion dollar RRoD, but finally made ALL of that $$$ back and now is making that cash. Sony probably won't get out of their hole until it's time for another gen (3 or 4 years), then will have to invest in another console and lose more money.

saying there back on track looks so bad when they came off such a huge success in the ps2 and basically taking a step back this gen while ms took a step forward.

Its funny how people are making fun of sony, when microsoft will never make money on 360 hardware. Why? Because they spent Over a billion dollars fixing red rings.

MS gaming division never made back that $4B they lost on the XBox. The $1B, maybe. The whole $5B? No way. They just wrote off the $4B as sunk costs and started new. And of course, MS's main money never really came from its gaming division but from Windows.

Somehow, I highly doubt that if we were to include their losses from the XBox. Plus, I believe that MS makes around $150M a quarter? Can't remember correctly, but if it's only $150M a quarter there is no way for them to have made back that $4B in just 5 years.

MS's E&D Division, under which gaming falls, lost almost $7.5 billion from 2002 to 2007. These have been written off as sunk costs.

I'm 99% you are misinformed. MS gaming division makes profit since the launch of Halo 3 (their first profits from the 360). However it is not nearly enough to cover all the losses from both the xbox and the 360's first 2 years. Someone posted a revenue table a while ago on a sales thread.

Its been reported as is for a few months now, its just they havent added the new chips into them untill now. Anyway, I went to a bunch of stores yesterday while I was job hunting, and I noticed that the places taht didnt have PS3s before had overflowing stock now, so it looks like they might have fixed taht supply issue.

Well, seeing as they expect the PS3 to have a 10 year life cycle or something they still have 6+ years of profit.

PS3 is a complacated issue.

  • It helped Sony with BluRay aginst HD-DVD
  • It will help with BluRay 3D and Sony's 3D stratagie (Movies, Pro camerias, TVs...)
  • PS2 has lasted 10years and still makes a proffit. I do not see Next gen taking off as fast as last gen or this gen.
  • Sony has other uses for PS3 that conect to Sony's other divisions.

True it cost Sony a lot of money and PS3 did not sell up to expectations. Still it has not been a total lost. Sony will make the most of it and as the price comes down PS3 will have a larger market in the world that already knows PS2.

The cost may delay PS4 but again as prices go up from Development/production cost in order to make the games more real it may be a good outcome to wait a few more years for the next generation to launch, and the longer the next gen holds off the better for Sony as More developers get to know how to best code for PS3, and tools Game engines cost is lowered, leading to less expensive but better looking games.

Also last year it was making a prifit overall but Sony droped the prices in other reigens and with Currency flucuations who knows how much money they make or lose every quarter. In the end we do not know how the PS3 will do overall.
