Everything else is a feel good smokescreen.
They are going run down the 4 million in inventory that they have and start ramping down production and eventually ceasing PS2 support.
This has to happen sooner or later, and now is a good time to do it as they can package it as a good deal for last gen latecomers.Also, they need to eventually cut overall costs as part of Sony's restructuring which winding down the PS2 will allow them to do.
It isn't the marginal manufacturing profit that each PS2 provides that matters...it is all the overhead associated with managing a whole product category, from shipping, to sales programs and channels, to contract management, to accounting etc that you can streamline and cut out completely when you shut down the whole support chain.That is what provides the savings and there is an inevitable day of reckoning for every product.
This is Sony's last gasp to milk whatever they can still milk out of the PS2 over the balance of this year....before PS2 shutdown.
That makes perfect sense. I'm not sure what PS2 sales have been like in recent months, but they're surely in decline. Eventually the decline in economies of scale will push the product into unprofitability.
