This is the reason for it. Then, a ps3 price cut against the 360 would be a double whammy......hmmm, i just wish it was bigger news

Singstar FTW! Seriously, it's gonna be the next Wii Fit-style phenomenon... or atleast Sony hopes...:lol:
they must not have much confidence in the PS3 takin down the Wii lol

Nothing is going to take down the Wii. Not PS3 or 360. I dont see how anyone can care about this 99 buck price cut. What like 5 people dont own a ps2 and if they dont own one they are looking into this gen not last gen. PS2 is like and old friend thats asking you to pull the plug and end it. Insted your just watching him suffer and take crap. Nothing big is coming to PS2 gaming wise just crappy multiplat games and proboly some family games. We had our good times and its time to end it.
[QUOTE="ironcreed"]...Wii going against PS2. If they came out in the same gen I'd put PS2 against Wii any day of the week.A $100.00 PS2...yep it's a 'cute' price. Beating the Wii in sales though? I do not think so.

Oh, I have to agree with that, easily. However in terms of today's market and with the age of the PS2 versus the popularity of the Wii, I find it highly doubtful. I personally have no interest in the Wii, just being realistic.
not even confidence enough to overtake the 360 that's closer..lulthey must not have much confidence in the PS3 takin down the Wii lol

not even confidence enough to overtake the 360 that's closer..lul Do you guys actually believe the dribble that flows from your keyboards or are you just doing some "SW humor" trying to get a rise out of people? What does the PS2 dropping in price have to do with the PS3 and 360? Or Sony's confidence in PS3 vs 360?Wii has new games and motion controls that work? lol sorry I couldn't help myself.PS2 has motion controls and new games?

Unless they're planning on shifting software support back onto the PS2 I don't see this being beneficial.

They believe lowering the price of the _PS2_ will help them take sales away from the _Wii_. Ok. If they had confidence in their newer system, the one that new games actually come out on ..the _PS3_, wouldn't you think they'd lower THAT price instead of the ps2's? Basically they are saying the Ps3 can't compete with the Wii in sales, so they are going push the ps2 :lol:they must not have much confidence in the PS3 takin down the Wii lol

PS3 can't compete with Wii, nor can the 360. Its got a whole different buyer. One that wants inexpensive hardware that doesn't push today's HD graphics and motion controls. It would be stupid for Sony to try and compete with that at this stage. Especially when you consider the cost of manufacturing the hardware. But you are a comedian. You trash on Sony for dropping the PS2 price to appeal to the casual gamer in times of financial hardship. But I'm sure it was SA-WEEEET to you when MS cut the 360 to $200 and still got crushed by Wii.
So Sony is cutting the price for a console that is more likely to hold back their current generation console? I don't understand. The lower price PS2 is more likely to harm Sony itself rather than Nintendo.
probably cutting price on PS2 to clear out inventory...
DS_fan_atic
This.
Everything else is a feel good smokescreen.
They are going run down the 4 million in inventory that they have and start ramping down production and eventually ceasing PS2 support.
This has to happen sooner or later, and now is a good time to do it as they can package it as a good deal for last gen latecomers.Also, they need to eventually cut overall costs as part of Sony's restructuring which winding down the PS2 will allow them to do.
It isn't the marginal manufacturing profit that each PS2 provides that matters...it is all the overhead associated with managing a whole product category, from shipping, to sales programs and channels, to contract management, to accounting etc that you can streamline and cut out completely when you shut down the whole support chain.That is what provides the savings and there is an inevitable day of reckoning for every product.
This is Sony's last gasp to milk whatever they can still milk out of the PS2 over the balance of this year....before PS2 shutdown.
When it comes to the brands (SONY, MS, Nintendo) the game is never over. Profits from PS2 go to Sony. That only helps Sony. It isn't beating the Wii so much as its trying to maintain some PS brand loyalty or increased userbase.So scoring a touchdown 3 years after the game ended will beat the Wii?:?

Not if MS lowered the 360's price to $99.Link

Not if MS lowered the 360's price to $99. I don't think MS could afford to lower the 360's price to $99. I honestly don't see the arcade going below $200 for a while.[QUOTE="DS_fan_atic"]

That makes perfect sense. I'm not sure what PS2 sales have been like in recent months, but they're surely in decline. Eventually the decline in economies of scale will push the product into unprofitability.Link

That's funny, I was just telling this to another poster about 4 hours ago, so it's true.

I agree. But the PS2 doesn't have motion controls either. Luckily, I own both. ^_^i would rather buy a ps2 than a wii tbh. ps2 has the best game library in the history of gaming and is the most successful console.
wii=shovelware
ps2=god

The PS2 should have had a price drop at least two years ago or more right around the end of the last gen. Sony milked it to hold the black hole that the PS3 initially was. Dropping the price now almost feels like a smack in the face.DrHyde
It should cost $50 by now, maybe then I would consider buying one.
