Lots of exclusives but not making much money from it I'm guessing. What can Sony do to turn this around?
This topic is locked from further discussion.
Well, to be honest the only good exclusive last year from Sony was Uncharted 3 and for what I heard it is quite inferior to Uncharted 2. Resistance and Killzone are meh franchises.
Gotta admit I don't live in the US nor in the developed countries but a marketing campaign does wonders. Dunno if Sony did that for all their exclusives.

Copy what MS does, make less but top quality games and not waste power in mediocre shooters all the time
This is true and I always wondered why they don't do this. They make too many games and many sell pretty mediocre. Best to stop making games that don't sell well enough, even if they do make an accounting profit on them, and take those resources and put them to games that actually do sell well.
It is better to make a few games that sell very well than make a bunch of games that have mixed sales.
I agree. I can't afford to buy all these exclusives, even with the money left over from spending on Wii/360 exclusives, because there aren't any.
Like the article said, get better marketing.tagyhagMuch easier to market a few products then a bunch of them. So yes. Cut off the low selling games and increase the marketing on the good selling ones.

Well they have finally learned this yes. They use to fund mediocre games as well. Like Crackdown.I don't understand why Sony would want to go from making several high profile high scoring titles a year, to the MS standard of one with several poop exclusives thrown in.
So this thread doesn't appeal to me since I prefer having the option of playing various great exclusives instead of one a year along with my multiplats. I mean, I like to pick for myself, its why I'm a Manticore.
From the article.
With titles like The Last Guardian - which sadly is unlikely to sell well – being stuck in development for years, and games like Resistance 3failing to pass a million sales, Sony's plan to release a huge number of quality games doesn't seem to be working for them. And, when you factor in the fact that Microsoft has managed to top the NPD six months running with the help of a fewer number or far higher marketed products, it's understandable why the cash-strapped company might want to release fewer games. Unfortunately, while a drop in Sony-produced content might be good for their bank balance, it certainly isn't good for gamers – titles like Heavy Rain and Flower would never have been funded by a different publisher.
With the PlayStation 4′s release drawing ever closer, it'll be interesting to see which route Sony decides to adopt – tons of games, little marketing or a few games with tons of marketing. I know which one I'd prefer.
Are you sure your title is right? I thought you were talking about MS, I mean there is no way you made your title and quote of context or just pulled it out of your ass right?
I mean with all the new exclusives coming out for PS3 like Twisted Metal, Starhawk, The Last of Us (GOTY when it comes out),and more coming this E3. Sony doesn't care about exclusives at all, no sir.
Xbox has Halo 4 and umm....ya....Halo 4, well there is Witcher (kinda) and it might come to PS3 later anyway, oh you guys get those COD map packs 30 days early...so ya, Xbox is where it's at for games yo! MS, they sure know how to treat their fanbase!
Well they need to start being more creative again and not copy off mainstream games like Gears and Halo... It's obvious what uncharted, resistance, killzone franchises are trying to appeal to here. Clearly it's not working. PS1 and PS2 had so much variety in exclusives and first party games which just doesn't exist with the PS3.

I think what cows fail to realize is that in the real world Sony exclusives aren't worth anything. No one really cares for them. I'm speaking for the real world of course.
jimmypsn
That's because the real world only enjoys casual games. Microsoft only knows how to throw casual games onto their console.
Sony knows what gamers want, and that's why we get core games.

Not true at all. You can make 100 hardcore exclusives games. And gamers and the mainstream are going to gravitate towards a handful of them. MS is lucky to have a few of those phenomenon type of games. Gears, Forza and Halo. They are arguably the best in their class as well.

Hardcore games are Counter Strike, Starcraft, Quake, ect. Mainstream will not go towards those games, as proven by the Wii. They want simple games that anyone can jump into. They enjoy their casual software like Kinect, Call of Duty, Mario Kart, Halo, New Super Mario Bros, Hello Kitty Island Adventure, and more.
Halo and Gears? Best in class for shooters? Get the hell outta here.

Are you serious? You cant see why Sony would do this? "High profile, high scoring" doesnt = revenue. That is what matters to a company. If the game scores a 5 here but hits COD like numbers in sales, do you really think Sony, or any of them would care about the score? Ratings dont pay employees, it seems.[QUOTE="ChubbyGuy40"][QUOTE="mems_1224"]halo 4 is all you need mems_1224

sure, but one great game is better than 10 mediocre ones:lol: at less games. less exclusive games maybe. i bought more games last year than i have any year this gen. there is absolutely no shortage of gamesI guess MS agenda to change the focus of the industry is working, rejoice lemmings, less games. You morons seem to be so happy about this  why the hell are you guys even into gaming.
If sony adapts MS strategy, I quit.

So many morons in System Wars. It's like people around here actually want these companies to make less games and waste more money on marketing and crap. Next someone will quote me and say "THEY NEED TO MAKE MONEY!"
When you buy a car do you ask them to keep the CD player so the company can make money? What's wrong you kids? You noobs acting like business majors need to get a reality check. Your consumers, start acting like it.
They just forget that most of them are not that good or fun in the first place. Sony are not Nintendo and be able to rely on mostly their exclusives. it wouldn't matter to Cows they'll just hyping out exclusives, exclusives, exclusives, exclusives, exclusives and still don't get it. MS doesn't really need to make games for the Xbox360 at this point. Third party devs do that and the games continue to pour in, regardless of the Cows notions that the Xbox360 has no core games because MS has abandoned the core audience. MS is increasing the install base of the Xbox360 by appealing to the casual demograph, while third party continues to serve the core audience. exclusives make the small percentage when it comes to the overall games available.I'm guessing everyone is starting to realize what MS was doing was sound business strategy after all huh? Funny how things work out.

From the article : "Despite being one of the best publishers in the industry, and managing to bring out critical hit after critical hit, Sony has failed to produce huge chart-topping games like Gears of War and Halo. Outside of Gran Turismo, Sony's IPs have yet to hit the big time, partially due to poor marketing – something that Sony's Worldwide Studios President has taken notice of..."
Most of the sales enthusiasts should be happy! Seriously, this has been known in SW for a longtime, although I'm not sure many really know what the ramifications truly mean.
This means Sony can easily spent three times as much on marketing a tiny few quality titles, and spend a whole lot less on making many high quality titles with little marketing. In the end, if gamers aren't buying these high quality titles, then they don't deserve them. These games don't deserve to exist.
I've said it before in System Wars.
Less games for gamers, sure, but hey, those sales enthusiasts will be excited! :P
Kinect for instance had over half a billion dollars spent on advertising alone.
I hope you guys enjoyed the output of High QUALITY games we got (check metacritic if you doubt that), because that looks to be slowing down. Sony isn't THQ or Zynga, they weren't in the business of pumping out mediocre titles....but whatever.
I told SW years ago if these trends continued, companies would have no choice but to adapt to the climate...it's a shame.
The end result is we will be getting less high quality games in the world, but we will have way more exposure on the few games getting released. Gamers shouldn't be happy about less high quality games, but it's a hard realization that this is what the industry has come down to.
Many titles today spent twice as much (or MORE $$$) on merely marketing the title than they do actually crafting it, ACTIVISION does this aplenty. They aren't the only ones, but success is success.
This doesn't mean it's great for gamers, it just means Sony has to do what Sony has to do.
sure, but one great game is better than 10 mediocre onesmems_1224
Not really. You'll likely find 2 great ones in that stack of 10 mediocres, because you were too lazy to give the game a chance the first time around.

Uncharted 3 was all I needed last year, the rest was just a nice bonus. This year The Last of Us is all I need (if it releases this year) the rest is also a very nice bonus.
You can have fun with just one game that isn't being made by the same dev, maeby it will be good mabey not. But wouldn't you prefer having more options? Wouldn't you like being able to look forward to more games? The more games that come out the more options you have to play.
And don't diss PS3 exclusives, just because you don't like them doesn't mean anything, they all sell pretty well, not Halo well but well enough, and most of them I enjoy alot. And sells don't equal quality sir, COD sold ALOT more than Halo, does that mean Halo is bad?
MS should be giving you guys more, you made the Xbox brand what it is today. My guess is that MS is retireing the 360 and Halo 4 will be the last game for it, they will be focusing on the next system. Let's just hope that next system has alot of good games for it, and that MS hasn't forgotten about you, their origional fanbase.
