Interviewer reads Newell's quote:

Gabe Newell: "The PS3 is a total disaster on so many levels. I think it's really clear that Sony lost track of what customers wanted, and what developers wanted. I say even at this late date, they should cancel it and do a do-over. Just say, 'this was a horrible disaster, and we're sorry, and we're going to stop selling this,' and stop trying to convince people to develop for it."

Phil Harrison, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios: "Well first and foremost I think Gabe's company has made 2 of the best games I've ever played. So I have deep respect for his output as a developer/publisher, but perhaps not so much for his comments in the press."

"By what measure is the launch of the Playstation 3 unsuccessful? We have people lined up in three continents to buy Playstation 3's. They were there for days at a time lining up, and we sold everything we shipped into the marketplace. We continued to supply the product to the marketplace on a weekly basis and we scheduled those supplies in great detail with our retail partners to meet their operational needs--and we met them. We have supplied into the marketplace more products in Japan, Asia, and the US than we did for the launches of Playstation 1 or Playstation 2, with more software than we did for Playstation 1 or Playstation 2, two formats that have combined to sell over 225 million units and over 2 billion units of software. What's wrong with this picture?

"However, we can always sell more. We can always have more software. The European launch is on track for the 23 of March. The boat with most of the supply....is on its way from China to various European ports as we speak. Hope the Suez Canal doesn't get closed, otherwise we're all screwed. The commitment to ship a million units into Europe on Day 1 has been made, and will be achieved. So, it's a phenomenal launch by any measure. Then add on top of that what's in the box. The fact that this is all inventive technology, that this is all new stuff, and it's leading edge stuff--I think it's a fantastic achievement."

I'm pretty sure Newell knew all of the information Phil presented before he made the comment.  Krazy Ken should be doing the damage control on this one, because only he can come up with a logical argument from Newell's comment.  4D FTW!

Well, Gabe was very unprofessional saying something like that, but to each their own. Gabe didn't make any PSOne, PSP, or PS2 games so he can bite any had he feeds he wants.

That being said, it is interesting Sony even bothered to respond, he's just a PC developer, what would have been shocking is seeing SQUARE, Capcom, Konami, etc. say something like that.

Still, I don't think the Damage Control was that great by Sony either, but then again, Gabe's statement was very general, so who knows.

Gabe is a big Nintendo fan, and obviously wasn't a fan of the PS2 from numorous other interviews prior.

I can say that they presented more Information for those that don't know or understand how to gauge success.

Damage control. Gabe Newell's comment was more from the hardware, technical aspects of the PS3 and the difficulty of developing games for that platform. Phill Harrison's comment is more like " FU people are buying our crap, so you opinion doesn't matter"

Capcom has already basically said that, but instead of being so blunt, they just started developing more 360 games.

Based on that specific quote, Phil Harrison's comments make sense. The PS3 has been far from perfect, but it certainly isn't so deeply flawed as to warrant a complete do-over. There is game support, the console is powerful and is packed with features, and plenty of people want it.

Could it have been better? Sure, and I'd be interested to hear the specific reasons why Gabe Newell felt the PS3 was as flawed as it was. However, those problems are not so severe as to warrant discontinuing the PS3.

I am not much of a person who cares about ownage or not, but I think Phil explained himself very well. I think people are a little hard on Sony. For some reason they have to live up to some standard nobody else has. IF they sell all their consoles and people cant get one they are wrong, if they are great with shipping and keeping the consoles in supply at the stores they have no demand. They just cant win. The truth is Sony is only shipping to 2 regions as opposed to everyone esle shipping to 3. That means Sony can keep PS3 instock easier then Nintendo can or the 360 could at the same time during its launch. People see it at the store and assume, nobody wants one but in reality nobody konws how long its been there or how soon it was picked up later. If recall correctly anyways, Gabe said he wasnt fond of the PS2 either. That goes to show me that he prefers a console he is familiar deving for like the Xbox or Xbox 360. His opinion is based more on personal preference then actual facts and logical reasoning.

You certianly can't count on much if any Support for the PS3 from Valve. They weren't even willing to Port Half Life 2 Episode 2 to the PS3. The most Valve was willing to do was hand the port over to EA and say "You do it"

And Gabe's comments were based more towards the PS3's hardware, it's backwards architecture ad difficulty to code for.

And all Phil could do was Damage control Sony's "Worldwide" launch

In reality who truly cares what he Gabe thinks.  He can cry all he wants but his claim to fame games are still coming to the PS3.  So in the end the consumer doesnt really get hurt by his personal problems.  And lets pretend he wanted to give up on making money off the PS3, the PS2 did extremely fine without his support so again, it doesnt truly matter.

Capcom always does that. Does 2 games really mean that though. NO.

They did the same for Dreamcast, actually they did better for the Dreamcast. So, being a fan of history, Capcom's 2 games do not equate to that. It may look like that NOW, from today's perpective, but Capcom eagerly supports new hardware.

Look at the original XBOX even...c'mon.

Gabe's opinion was towards the hardware side of the PS3, Phil never said anything to counter it and frankly the PS3 isnt so hot. How is anyone hard on Sony, they make it hard for themselves. Phil is doing what I would do, deny...it makes your company not look so weak.

What ps3 version?

Old news.

Very Old news.

It was announced, like 6 months to a year ago. The PS3 and 360 are getting the same game, and funny thing, the PS3 version was announced first.

Also, Gabe has nothing to do WITH EITHER VERSION.

I say even at this late date, they should cancel it and do a do-over. Just say, 'this was a horrible disaster, and we're sorry, and we're going to stop selling this,' and stop trying to convince people to develop for it."

Phil Harrison: "Well first and foremost I think Gabe's company has made 2 of the best games I've ever played.

Gabe...owned? Or did Phil fail at damage control?

MrGrimFandango

Gabe's opinion was towards the hardware side of the PS3, Phil never said anything to counter it and frankly the PS3 isnt so hot. How is anyone hard on Sony, they make it hard for themselves. Phil is doing what I would do, deny...it makes your company not look so weak.

No Gabes comments were much more general. He said they should scrap the PS3 and do a "redo". Thats a little harsh if your just talking about a console being hard to dev for as a PC dev. Phils comments were right, he basically said why would we scrap a console that has plenty of dev support and is selling well, just because he doesnt like it? Other devs have come to Sonys corner saying its not as hard to dev for as the PS2. Gabe disliked the PS2 so IMO, he doesnt really car much about gaming but easily porting his games to a console.

You know what's real damage control? Rebutting a well-argued statement by calling it "damage control"

Yea, Phil didnt resort to insults like Gabe did.

Gabe wasn't talking about its sales of course. Which was all Phil replied with, "Uh ? People lined up and we sold well...".

You call "people lined up for the PS3 for days" a well-argued statement ? Give me a break.

No, I call the entire 3 paragraphs of comments I typed out a well-argued statement. You're gonna cherry-pick a statement and pretend like that's all he said?

Just like I said above: "Gabe wasn't talking about its sales of course. Which was all Phil replied with, "Uh ? People lined up and we sold well..."." Phil probably thought that Gabe was talking about sales.

What other indicator of success is there in economics other than healthy sales? If a product sells well, how are you going to twist it around and say it was a failure?

Obvious attempt at damage control. Newall was refering to the horrible design of the PS3's hardware. Harrison isn't even addressing the subject, and instead starts his marketing fluff.

Gabe is not dumb. He knows the PS3 sold well at launch and obviously was talking about its developer unfriendly hardware.

PS2 was developer unfriendly hardware. Sold over 100 million. PS3 might be a pain in the ass for developers, but if it sells well, it still succeeds as a product.

Gabe Newell, though a fantastic developer, tends to complain a lot.  At E3-06, Newell slammed both the 360 and PS3 because it didn't make his life any easier.  Then, he slams MS for even making the 360 (in that same article the TC cited) when he believed more time should have gone into the PC gaming element of Windows Vista.  Further still, he praises the Wii for what it is and very much likes what Nintendo has done.  But, regardless of what Gabe Newell says, his company, Valve, is making games for the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC - not the Wii (at the moment).  I guess for Newell, hate=love, and love=hate.

Well said.

I didn't want to type so much, but I do want to add, GABE HATED THE PS2. Hated it, so what he hates is not an indication AT ALL of what actually has the best games or the best sales...

[QUOTE="Thunderjack"][QUOTE="Mordred19"]I just hope Gabe's attitude toward the PS3 doesn't have an effect on the quality of the PS3 version of the Half-Life 2 Orange Box. SolidTy

What ps3 version?

Old news.

Very Old news.

It was announced, like 6 months to a year ago. The PS3 and 360 are getting the same game, and funny thing, the PS3 version was announced first.

Also, Gabe has nothing to do WITH EITHER VERSION.

He has nothing to do with it? Are you sure? Is that good or bad?

Well let's not be stupid here (a first for SW). Gabe Newell says that the PS3 needs to be scrapped and completely redone. This is an EXTREME position to take..and if you're going to take that position, you should be backing up that statement with plenty of examples and reasons. Newell provided NONE of that. So Sony could interpret that anyway- the hardware was bad, the software was bad, game development was too difficult, etc...so Sony's response was appropriate. The reason Newell didn't come out and explain why is because it would open him up to counter-points by other developers, debunking what he said. And given Newell's history of being a massive whiner, I think there's a good chance that would happen.

UpSwing

u do know that ea is only the publisher right?...wow ur stupidity is showing

Well, Gabe was very unprofessional saying something like that, but to each their own.

That being said, it is interesting Sony even bothered with his words, he's just a PC developer, what would have been shocking is seeing SQUARE, Capcom, Konami, etc. say something like that.

Still, I don't think the Damage Control was that great either, but then again, Gabe's statement was very general, so who knows.

Gabe is a big Nintendo fan, and obviously wasn't a fan of the PS2 either.

SolidTy

Capcom has already basically said that, but instead of being so blunt, they just started developing more 360 games.

True, but Dead rising still is fun. I stil lhave it. I may trade it in for Lost Planet though.

Damage control. Gabe Newell's comment was more from the hardware, technical aspects of the PS3 and the difficulty of developing games for that platform. Phill Harrison's comment is more like " FU people are buying our crap, so you opinion doesn't matter"

He called the PS3 launch a disaster (blu-ray shortage/canceling 2 million to 1 million) and Phil Harrison addressed that....so how does that go along with what you are saying?
