From Eurogamer

A new report has claimed Sony is working on a "pro" controller for PlayStation 5 that it's planning to officially unveil "soon".

That's according to the ever leaky Tom Henderson who, writing for Try Hard Guides (thanks VGC), claims to have seen images of a prototype from a source wishing to remain anonymous.

Henderson says the new controller retains the same basic style of the existing PlayStation 5 controller but features a number of key differences. These include "removable stick units" - which can be switched in and out using buttons below the analog sticks - plus trigger stops, a seemingly removal grip, and rear buttons that Henderson describes as "flappy paddles", presumably similar to those seen on the likes of Microsoft's Xbox Elite Wireless Controller.’

would you buy one?

hopefully the battery last longer than the dual sense. That thing chews through its charg.

Nope.

Don't have a PS.
Hate PS controllers.
Use it for PC would be stupid.

Interested to see what kind of laughable price it's gonna be though.

Don't know who that poster is, but I'm gonna assume he's a Sony fanboy, and my statement above is correct.

Maybe this controller will have a touch pad on the back to make it backwards compatible with PS Vita games? I’m sure Sony will allow Vita games on the PS+ Premium service at some point in the future.

The Dual Sense’s battery is about 10 hours, which is not bad. Just not as good as Nintendo Switch Pro controller. But you also don’t get the cool features on the Switch Pro controller either. Now if you want to talk about controllers with bad battery life, that’s the Wii U controller. I think it was only like 2-3 hours.

@Pedro: True, most devs won’t bother utilising the back trackpad for any new games they make. But perhaps the front touchpad could be used for Vita games? I know it would feel awkward to use a front touchpad to replace a back trackpad, but I wouldn’t mind it either way :)

Overpriced shit. I just want 2-4 paddles at the bottom of my standard controller. Is this too much to ask for?

If it plays nicely with Linux i may sit up and take notice (depending on the perks of course). I'm a bit of a sucker for interesting controllers :P.

i dont have a big collection of controllers...but i kinda want one. I have a perfectly functioning 8bitdo SN30 Pro+ (and a PS3 and 360 controller). But i also have credit in my amazon account and my brain keeps nagging me to get the Pro2 for the flappy paddles. I don't need it but i want it.

i wont though....well probably wont....probably.

Wonder if it will still use faulty potentiometers. Neither MS or Nintendo have confronted this issue yet, Sony has an opportunity to make a statement here, maybe compel the others to finally address the issue too.

In my case, and i began having issue within the first month of the ps5 release, it was grease. There was grease on the sensors. I cleaned it all with rubbing alcohol, and the issue was gone. Late last year, had the same thing happen to my right stick as well, i did the same thing, and its been working perfectly ever since. People assembling these might be brain dead.

@hardwenzen: for me the drift has only been subtle, sometimes when tilting sticks a certain direction and returning to center there can be a subtle drift that's more annoying than it is problematic. I sometimes wonder if deadzone settings can mediate much of the issues I experienced.

I think I read before like with the Nintendo issue that the problem persists due to a thin application of the materials used to detect movement when the axis rotate. Other things I have read in past regarding other issues for more prominent drift come from more extreme wear that appear to the result of the modules cheaper construction. If you look at photos of the say the Xbox 360 and PS3 analog modules versus their 8th and 9th gen counterparts we can see they newer ones swapped out metal parts for cheaper plastic ones. I imagine this is responsible for more of the harder drift problems like when sticks are loose and don't center correctly.

Myself with the Xbox One issues believed much of my drift was attributed to some kind of dust, I suspect from the stick rubbing against edge and when I did experience drift I found blowing hard down into the housing would remedy my issues for me for a while.

As far as dead zone considerations though I wonder if say games could sometimes engage or change system and/or controller settings with respect to dead zones because I remember I fought on and off with dead zone issues for a while few years back, then when playing Titanfall 2 when it released I engaged the in-game setting dead zone options for a larger dead zone and I noticed the dead zone drift issues disappeared for me in other games that were giving me issues as well, so strange there, made me wonder what game I played in past might have changed and not reverted the deadzone settings if that was possible.

I'd be very curious though since people can still cheaply buy 7th gen analog modules by the bag full whether those will can be swapped out on the 8th/9th gen XB/PS controllers or not. If I can find someone handy with a soldering iron like one of those smaller game shops that do repairs I'd be curious if they could make it work, or maybe just pay them to try for my curiosity.

Dope.

I might even buy one depending on how good it is and how much it costs. Never liked the DualShock design until the DS4 (that controller design wasn't good or comfortable to hold until the DS4 and that's a hill I'll die on) and I still hate the symmetrical low analog stick placement that only Sony hasn't come to realize doesn't work as well for modern games (Microsoft uses the asymmetrical design, Nintendo's Switch Joy-Cons and pro controller use it, most third party controller designs use it, hell, even the Dreamcast used it) but the DualSense is good stuff. Love the haptic triggers and improving even further on them is definitely something I'd love.

I still hold the Elite Series 1 and 2 as my favorite controllers ever and I've got three of them (two series 1s I got at a discount for console and PC and a Series 2 I also got at a discount for the Series X). If the DualSense Pro (or whatever they call it) is of similar quality, I can see myself getting one for the PS5.

@lamprey263: X360 controllers were actually the first ones to use plastic modules. But this ones don't really cause classic drift. The plastic ones create a different kind of "physical" drift in which you will actually feel like a bump when you move the stick and then you will experience the drift, because the plastic is more prone to deform with use. The true about drift becoming more prominent is basically rumbling and other extra capabilities and cost. Companies have been putting more tech on the pads with each gen but they want the price to stay the same, and the potentiometer has been the fall guy. With each passing gen they have been putting potentiometers with less life expectancy onto their controllers. So the best solution is to actually find modules with high quality potentiometers online that can fit on the pad you want to modify and solder them in.

Yes modifying dead zones can alleviate drift. Used to do this on PC with a 360 pad and third party directinput/xinput software, until the drift became so big that the dead zone became huge and the stick was basically useless.
