Sony, the Japanese consumer electronics group, has ruled out cutting the price of the PlayStation 3 console before Christmas, insisting that the PS3 is better value than rivals half its price.

"The answer is yes, if you're asking, 'Are these the prices we're going with this Christmas?'" said Kazuo Hirai, president and group chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment, in an interview with the Financial Times.

Up to half of all video game sales are made in the run-up to Christmas and Sony is gambling that despite the weak economy, consumers will not just buy the cheapest machine. If they do, Sony could lose further ground to Nintendo's Wii and to Microsoft's entry-level Xbox 360, which sells for $199 in the US after a price cut in September - half the $399 cost of the cheapest PS3.

Mr Hirai argues that the basic Xbox has no hard disk drive while the PS3 plays high-definition Blu-Ray movies as standard. "When you really compare apples to apples, then I think we have a very good value proposition," he said.

Sony, launched its third PlayStation model in the line in November 2006. The PS3 competes most directly with the Xbox 360. Both are high-powered consoles that have sold well to gaming enthusiasts, but neither has matched the casual appeal and rapid success of the much cheaper Wii.

Two years after launch, Mr Hirai is keen to broaden sales but said "we're getting to the point where price becomes more important".

Sony has opted to include more with each PS3 rather than sell the console for less. Last week it said the main model marketed in Japan would come with a bundled game and an 80-gigabyte hard disk, up from 40GB, at the same Y39,980 price.

Another important upgrade would be 'Home', Sony's long-delayed online community in which users will be able to maintain their own apartment and socialise in a three-dimensional world.

"We're going online with an open beta [version] by the end of this year," Mr Hirai said, but there is no date for a full launch.

In common with the rest of the industry, Mr Hirai expects video games to be resilient in the economic downturn, as consumers buy cheap home entertainment rather than go out.

"As long as we can generate excitement, then we will be less affected than other industries," he said.

Meanwhile, the president of one of Japan's largest game developers said the credit problems are having an effect. Fumiaki Tanaka, the head of Konami Digital Entertainment, told the FT that some of the company's distributors are struggling to fund their operations.

So, it looks like a WII and Xbox Christmas.

I think so to, especially in an economic downturn. People might be looking for a cheaper alternative this Christmas, even it doesn't have all the bells and whistles.

They seem to not understand how business around Christmas time works. But I guess that's what they get for having people in charge who think you can add upgraded hardware through firmware updates.

Sony won't admit a price cut even the day before they announce a price cut.

It's not wise to announce that you will have a price cut in a month or two.

Definitely not a good move by Sony. I'd elaborate, but it seems unnecessary.

I don't blame them, they need to make profit.

That being said the PS3 will most likely be raped in sales this Christmas. They better promote LBP and Resistance 2 to hell and back. Even MGS4 should be used to push a couple of consoles.

I agree, this is a huge let down to ps2 loyals hoping to get a ps3 at a reasonable price to them, shattered dreams just now turned slowly even more into conversion.

Why not. They always lose money on the console and make it from games. Drop price, sell more consoles, take loss, sell more games, make more money.

This is bad sony has abosolutely no chance of winning the holidays w/o a legit price cut. Its console is just way too expensive (and doesnt offer enough) for your average family especially with this lingering recession were in.

This is what I think they should do. If you get a 2 games or a game and a movie for $399, its not too bad. They will do horrible this Christmas if they don't at least bundle games with the system.

They probably can't do too many more price drops before shareholders start saying the gaming division needs to just cut it's losses short.

But is it wise to keep denying it and possibly push consumers into making a decision to buy one of the other two consoles? They should just *shrug* and leave it up in the air. Why lie if you have one in the works, that just makes people mad. I suppose Sony has until Black Friday in the U.S. to change their minds.

Smart move. In times when people are poorest (like now), people tend to go with the most expensive things they can find. buy a new car with all the extras, take a nice tropical vacation. eat out at a fancy restaurant. Buy a loaded out PS3 with a few exclusives and a bunch of ports to pick out. Dumb.

I dunno, seems like they'd rather sell their console at a cheaper price then not selling it at all.

I'm still waiting for them to cut the price of the old 40g model they have a large stockpile of them that with a nice pricecut could simultaniously help them compete sales wise over christmas and get the 80G and 160G into the standard market without the old 40G confusing people as to why the 40 and 80g system cost the same.

Denying it won't cause big enough of splash to even reach out the people interested in buying a console. Meanwhile saying that we while be seeing a price cut during november or december will probably have a higher chance of being posted on every gaming site and even on other news outlets.

So rather deny and get sales they can get . When the day of the price cut, make a big announcement about it with retailers sending out flyers and commercials showing the new price as well.

I'm just saying, i do not trust Sony on that statement. I expect a 50$ or 100$ price cut during november/december.

He's right, the PS3 is overall a better valued system. Tack on the essentials to the arcade, live and HD, and they're pretty much the same price. But the PS3 just has a better quality.

I don't think the current price has stopped anyone from buying a PS3, and it won't stop a lot of people this holiday from getting one. With that in mind there will be a lot getting a 360 or Wii because of how cheap it is.

Sony is just in a bad situation due to the economic situation right now. There's already news report that September had weak consumer product sales but also second hand stores like Thrift Stores and Salvation Army had a boost. This just tells you that people are being wise with their money by buying the lower cheaper better priced items like the 360. Even if Sony wants to, they can't afford to have a price drop this holiday, game over.

Not like they'll mention it until right before it happens, it would kill the sales right now. But if they don't it's a pretty bad move.

Well in the past during economic slumps the entertainment buisness has done very well... A mother and father a sad because they dont have the money to go this years vacation... so thy just buy the kids a video game and call it quits. The runts are happy and they saved money... But the reall question is will they buy the ps3. Probably not when they see a wii.

They'll look at their Q3-Q4 earnings, glaze over the NPD, slap themselves in the face, and drop the price.

That, or all this is a lie and a facade so that we don't stop buying PS3s.

News report: people aren't buying PS3s. They know this isn't PS3 season. That comes later, when Sony comes to its senses and actually figures out how to respond to the market.

The 80GB PS3 now only has the same features as the 40GB PS3. The hard drive price differences arent really big......I doubt any ps3 model will get one.

Since the ONLY difference between the 40 and 80 gig is the HDD, how much can they really drop the price? An 80g drive costs what, 20 dollars more than a 40 gig? Wow, so 40g PS3 for $379.99? No thanks, that justs reminds the consumer how much less the 360 and Wii are.
