Sony shipped over 400,000 PSVR headsets for the first quarter 2017.

429,000 to be exact. Total PSVR units sold are now way past a million.

That's pretty impressive. As many on here are eager to note, it's not exactly cheap nor has it been heavily advertised lately. I'll be getting a VR headset soon for my research - not a psvr because it's a closed system, but I'm glad to see at least some life in the market

All fanboyism aside, VR shouldn't be compared with the 8th generation of consoles, but as it's own separate thing that can only be used by people who even have ps4's or strong pcs.

Think of it as first generation vr vs 8th generation consoles, by the time 8th generation of vr comes around it'll be super mainstream, heck I'm sure it'll hit the true mainstream at around 2nd or 3rd gen.

I think the closed system of psvr might be worth it considering it's currently the most comfy and easy to use vr headset and it's also the best looker :P

@putaspongeon: I like the psvr as a product, but because my needs are to develop my own stuff for it for research use it's just not the right one for my specific case.

Many developers spent millions of dollars for consoles without a single unit sold,how in hell you think console start? The switch didn't have 40 million units on launch you know and millions were spent making games for it,by your logic no console would get a game until it has sold 20 millions.

yea except nobody supported PSVR from day 1...we are almost a year in and still only 1 real game for it RE 7.

That is why it will fail. Sony and all the companies who are doing VR needs to support and open system.

I don't develop for commercial purposes (and am not trained in programming well enough to do so!) - I'm a neuroscientist and create/use virtual navigation tasks and games for my research. I'm going to expand this to "true" VR, which will be fun

They could ship a million of them, it doesn't make a difference, they're piled up at every electronics retailer I've been to.

Yeah unfortunately, even if they're shipping a lot, they dont appear to actually be selling much. My local stores ALWAYS have them in stock. The PSVR just doesnt have too many must buy games right now. And even if they're are must buy games, most people arent willing to drop another 500 bucks to play one or two short games. They just need more.

That's pretty impressive considering the lack of marketing, hype, or worthwhile VR titles.

If these numbers keep up for a few more years (and if people start buying them from stores), a major developer might actually take notice and try to incororate this accessory into their games.

Ehhhh... I'm waiting. PC will be the avenue for my VR, but i'll want top-notch, so i'll wait a while and spend money in a year or two. Not enough to interest me at the moment.
