Someone made this thread 2 or 3 days ago. They were sued, but I doubt they'll lose since they did nothing illegal.

I think that the wrong attitude to have.

So what your saying is, you don't care simply because the features removed weren't the features that YOU particularly care about.....honestly that sounds rather selfish.

I mean, shouldn't you care on the general principle of consumer rights? Shouldn't you care that big corporations can just arbitrarily crap on people and get away with it?

Seriously, isn't what your saying selfish?

Capitalism leads to individualism. People will always care less about things which don't affect them. It's all fair game. Even if "Sony should be sued", "removal of features" is not a valid ground for any legal actions. Then again, I doubt anybody read the terms and conditions or what is and isn't Sony's liability when they bought their PS3.

Not defending Sony's rather lazy and forceful methods but...

Did you ever use or ever planned on using Linux on the PS3, TC?

No offense to you, but the way you usually type (and the oozing ignorance in most of your posts I've seen) does not imply that you are part of the demographic that value the Other OS option, quite the opposite.

Also, Sony is already getting sued. What's the point of this thread telling people that we should burn Sony to the ground?

Also, I find it weird that people are getting all over Sony for this. For one, the Other OS was not in the slim models. This would somewhat bring it even. Additionally, Linux runs like CRAP on the PS3, it may be of use for Cell programming, but you could get better performance from any computer that's less than 5 years old.

Also, do I need to remind you guys that the source of all this, is GeoHot and the pirate community? The PSP was almost put into its grave thanks to those people, you'd think Sony would just let them have their way on their flagship console? Sure it was lazy to remove the feature altogether, but if GeoHot unlocked the RSX in the Other OS function, it would be the end of the PS3 profitability for Sony. People will simply play games from the Other OS.

Piracy is much more potentially hurtful to the PS3 than to the PS1/PS2. This time around, Sony needs every cent of those software sales, especially since they LOSE money on the hardware (until recently), and because of that fact that they are trailing in 3rd place instead of dominating the market like before.

Besides, Sony was kind enough (at least) to allow those who use PS3 networks like the Airforce to keep it. Those people doesn't use them to play games. Locking away PSN and new games is just a way to prevent those who didn't take the update to pirate the console should the scenario mentioned above happens. (Unlocking of the RSX)

My bottomline opinion: If you were serious about Linux, you wouldn't use it on the PS3. If you were serious about Linux ON THE PS3(i.e. Cell programming, Airforce networks), you wouldn't use the PS3 for it's latest games.

this feature is so useless who cares if they took it out, the amount of RAM on the PS3 is terrible which causes it to freeze occasionally while using the PS3 Web Browsers, and u paid $600 because you wanted games, movies, and music if you didn't buy the PS3 for those reasons SOLELY then you bought it for the wrong reasons

Interesting you say this,

But I actually called Sony Corp. the day after the removal.

I got escalated several times.

Then finally a week later, someone from their legal department called me and told me to basically STFU and "all your base belong to us"....basically.

I'm really pissed about this and I think that Sony stands a really good chance of losing this since the suit is based in CALIFORNIA. California has been known to side and champion consumer rights.

We'll see.

You willingly bought your PS3 with no OTHER OS feature, and payed your $300 dollars at the register knowing such.... just as you bought it WITHOUT PS2 backwards compatibility.

I on the other hand purchased my PS3 for $400 at the register and was promised I could use the OTHER OS feature.

eh did you ever look at the price of producing those 600 PS3's also the current economic trends.Take away the features that aren needed (BC isnt a necessity FACT its a want) so it was taken out in later models to reduce manufacturing costs and more chance of sony turning a profit. How is that decision silly tie that with the current economic situation its a good one.I could bet any other company would do this if needed to cut their loss yes even MS and Ninty would but their consoles were in a sound position because they used DVD drives which at that time could be bought by the penny.

Also linux was removed because of a hypervisor bypass meaning that if it were to be tampered with it would most likely lead to runnable unsigned code which would lead to piracy Sony dont want that so they plugged the hole simple as day and night.Besides i dont even know a single person who even used this feature.

Thinking back to all the hobbyists I knew in high school, the kids in the computer lab who liked to play around with the hardware, learn C++, and create simple games in their spare time, this is EXACTLY the sort of feature that might attract such kids to this console over its competition, even if it were a poor example of a PC running Linux. And wouldn't you know it, every single one of those kids happen to be avid gamers.

You don't have to be "serious" about Linux to use this feature. Maybe you just wanted to test out Linux period, without committing yourself to learning how to dual-boot your PC.

As for the guys at GeoHot, I don't know much about it, but Ihighly doubt getting an OS on the system is the biggest of their technical constraints.

I have strong sympathy for people who were deceived into purchasing a fat PS3 at launch under the promises of all of the features that it included but which have since been removed.

This isn't a case of buyer's remorse. This is a case of "bait and switch".

Sony and Microsoft both screwed up big time this gen. They are getting dominated by Nintendo's last-gen tech. They should have done more research on how many people actually have HD TVs. The cost of their consoles is not worth it for many people. Also, the 360 is probably the most unreliable console of all time.

Please have some common sense. You can still use otherOS, it has not been removed. What has happend is that if you want to play online, then you need to update, BUT and this is a big but, you have never paid for PSN and it has seperate T%C's to what the PS3 has. Sony has done nothing wrong and you were not lied to.

What is he supposed to care about? I couldn't care less if others are not happy with their PS3 purchase. Return it. Sell it on ebay. Are we supposed to feel sorry for people who regret their purchases when we're happy with them?

dkrustyklown

I have strong sympathy for people who were deceived into purchasing a fat PS3 at launch under the promises of all of the features that it included but which have since been removed.

This isn't a case of buyer's remorse. This is a case of "bait and switch".

Correct me if Im wrong, but the PS3 was never launched with otherOS and it came in a firmware after launch.

Sony and Microsoft both screwed up big time this gen. They are getting dominated by Nintendo's last-gen tech. They should have done more research on how many people actually have HD TVs. The cost of their consoles is not worth it for many people. Also, the 360 is probably the most unreliable console of all time.

I think you will find that what Microsoft and Sony (more Sony) have done have done wonders for other things than just their gaming departments. For example, Sony are doing well not only in the gaming market, but the TV market with HD TV's and the Blu-ray 'market' (for want of better words) with Blu-ray players and disks.

I got the PS3 to play GAMES not install Linux.

I could already do that on the PC.

Besides only the PS3 FATS had that feature.

PS3 Slim does not. Did people complain when they did that?????

shawty1984

You willingly bought your PS3 with no OTHER OS feature, and payed your $300 dollars at the register knowing such.... just as you bought it WITHOUT PS2 backwards compatibility.

I on the other hand purchased my PS3 for $400 at the register and was promised I could use the OTHER OS feature.

I was lied to.....You were not...YES HE WAS

Huge and fundamental difference between you and I, LegatoSkyheart.

That is a ridiculous distinction. He either has to give up the Other OS feature or Online play. Both features were promised and advertised and one definitely will be removed. He was therefore lied to, that is common sense.

Oh, and yes he did pay for online multiplayer, when he paid for his PS3. It was a promised well advertised feature of the machine. It is still plastered all over their "It Only Does Everything" advertising campaign.

Sigh. PSN is free and has always been free and is totally sperate to the PS3. When you buy a PS3, you are not then ready to play online, you need to make an account and agree to their T&C's, it is totally spetrate and has never been paid for.

He has never been lied to.

I agree that Sony should own up to all those "promises" they ended up taking out right now...but for the BOTD, it was back then, and this is now. Think of it as an arrogant fool who made too many bets to afford, and in the present day has to make sacrifices to rectify it. I mean, the PS3 was an all-in-one machine at launch, and people complained about the price....so they lowered the price at the expense of what most of us treasured on the thing in favor of more people sparking an interest in it. I'm pretty sure Sony was cocky enough to expect $600 consoles to fly off the shelves in a matter of days, and when it didnt' quite go according to plan, had to do SOMETHING to make the thing more appealing again. I wouldn't blame them for doing what they are doing to cover the losses, but at the same time I think that "it only does everything' is a lost cause now...I wouldn't go as far to say I'm "pissed" over features being removed, rather wonder if there was a better way to do it...or at least have Sony not be so over confident with every announcement in the future (you know, like expecting the PSP Go to be the next big thing in handheld gaming :?).

If PSN were "totally separate from the PS3" then of course Sony would have no right to advertise that if you buy a PS3, you can use it to play games online. If they did make such a claim they would be...LYING.

In order not to be lying when they said such a thing, they would have to qualify by saying, if you agree to our T&C you may be able to play online, but I don't remember that in the commercial, not even in small print.

When you buy a piece of Ikea furniture it has not been put together, but if the pieces aren't in the box you can be fairly sure you'll get your money back, because you were promised those pieces would make a chair.

The legal status of such a T&C (essentially an EULA or Shrinkwrap license) is unclear, it has been challenged in the courts and they have ruled both ways. In my opinion, of course it is a deceptive practice to change an agreement after the point of sale. A sale also includes a contract. I would go so far as to say I think it is insane to suggest changing an agreement after the fact is not clearly deceptive. You are right in thinking he probably won't win in the courts because even if such a contract is a scam, by agreeing to it he forfeited his right to challenge it. You are about as wrong as anyone can be in my opinion in saying that takesy-backsy is not lying just because it is legal.

He was clearly lied to.
