The PS3 is a failure. It's way too expensive, especially in this current market where everyone is tightening their belts, and it's been losing market share since its release. Also, Sony may never fully recover the cost of the PS3 (it's still selling at a loss, as opposed to the Xbox 360, which breaks even, or the Wii, which generates a small profit for each console sold). Sony's in a pickle, no doubt about it. So what should they do? I propose they cede the market completely.

That's right: I think they should just stop making PS3's and cede the home console market, cut their losses and get out before their lack of profitabilty destroys them. That doesn't mean they have to stop making games, though. Sega's Dreamcast died off, but Sega didn't; it's a pretty successful developer right now, and has released some really nice games (Sonic aside). If Sony announces a refresh of the God of War series, developed for the 360 (and begins work on bringing GoW3 to the 360) it could help boost the 360 enough to perhaps compete with the Wii.

If Sony leaves the market now, it'll be OK. Sure, it's wasted a lot of money on the piece of junk also called the Playstation 3, but Sony's not a game company like Nintendo, who could've well gone out of business if the Wii had failed. Sony also has its computer line (VAIO's etc) and its TV line (the Bravia). They're still profitable, not to mention it owns the only hi-def format, the Blu-Ray, which although it isn't selling so well right now, is a potential cash cow in the future. So, Sony could afford to pull out. Sure, it'll hurt in the short run, but they'll be glad in the long run not to have that money-hemmoraging albatross around their neck

It's a lose / lose situation for Sony. They either drop out now and embarris themselves even further in the process or carry on the way there going an eventually get totally bankrupt. The first option is less painful but they lose either way. PS3 killed Sony.

I like the adjectives in that last sentence lol. But really, it can only get better with the PS3. The PS3 bottomed out at launch, with that hefty price tag and basically no games. There's no way to go but up. Eventually, perhaps early-mid 2009, they will start to make profit off their hardware. And maybe they'll come with a price cut mid-late 2009 while still profiting. Plus with all the games coming out, they are in too deep anyways.

I'm afraid I'll have to respectfully disagree there, blazndragon0. I don't think that the PS3 has "nowhere to go but up", mainly because they haven't gone up, they've gone down. We'll see I suppose, and you're right, with all the games coming out they are in very deep, but I still believe pulling out would be the least painful way for them to gracefully end the PS3's life, which is on life-support anyway.

I think what we'll see in 2009 is the entire collapse of the PS3 structure. The games will do OK. They won't be amazing, but they won't sell the kind of units that can sustain a console. In 2010, we'll see a precipitous drop in games as developers begin to shun the money-losing PS3. Third-party exclusives will vanish, and multiplatforms will start to shift to developed-for-360, ported to PS3. The PS3 might recieve a much-needed price cut, perhaps bringing the low-end PS3 down to $350 or even $300, still not enough to revive the PS3's fortunes.

Eventually, much like the Dreamcast, Sony's in-house game development division will begin to develop games for other consoles (such as porting God of War 3 to the Xbox 360). That would spell the beginning of the end, as it would indicate that Sony is preparing the PS3 for the graveyard. Finally, by late 2010, the PS3 begins its death spiral. Massive price cuts on the order of $100 in order to shift inventory begins (whee! PS3 for $200?! Oh wait, it's going to be discontinued? Booo!). Finally, by Feb. 2011, Sony announces in a press conference that the Playstation line has been terminated. Development for the PS4 has been halted.

By this logic, Nintendo shouldn't exist because of the Gamecube's success compared to PS2/Xbox.

I don't mean this in a rude tone, but how have they gone down? At launch they were losing $200 or so on every system sold. Now, it's just $50. Granted, they are still losing, but that's in no way "down." Also, to be honest I have no idea why anyone would even think about getting a PS3 at launch. Maybe bluray, but it had no good games at launch. Now, 2008 is arguably "the year of the PS3" and they have even more of an array of games coming out in 2009. That's quite a grim future you have for the PS3. But indeed, only time will tell :P

Sony Dominated the gaming industry for ten years, they dont anymore but thats no reason to drop out. the Ps3 will become cheaper and profitable soon, they will most definitely survive this gen and deliver many more great games. Expect a 200$ Ps4 next gen.

Sorry fanboy, but Sony is doing tremendously well so far. PS3 is a huge success since it helped blu-ray win, and just wait till the release of Killzone 2. Also the Playstation family is beating the heck out of the Wii and 360.

lol this post is full of fanboyish remarks. anyway explain to me why nintendo didn't drop out after the gamecube failed, their second console in a row that failed to win the console war. Or how about the Xbox and all of the money MS lost because of it. why didn't they drop out? your logic doesn't make any sense.

I disagree. Competition drives the industry. Also Sony has done great things for the gaming industry in the past. While I'm disappointed with the PS3, I don't believe they should concede.

Do you guys understand that the very fact that Sony is MORE than just a gaming company is MORE reason for them to ditch the game market? Unlike Nintendo, which completely relies on the gaming industry, Sony can ditch the PS and still survive. Tons of other companies did it. Philips, for example...remember the CD-i?

MS didn't quit because they EXPECTED to lose money on the original XBOX. It was all part of the grand plan...get their foot in the door at a loss with the XBOX, then make a comeback with the 360. And, so far, it's working as planned. I'm sure the 360 was a failure, MS would have been looking for a way out.

You think Sony planned on LOSING money with the PS3? Hell no...they and their investors expected to turn a profit almost immediately.

I'd be surprised if a PS4 came out. I don't think the PS3 will die anytime soon, but I think this is the last hurrah for Sony's gaming division.

If Sony left the console market that would leave just Nintendo and Microsoft, which might as well be as bad as a monopoly.

You want to be ripped off on everything because there is no choice?

Gamecube was awful but it didn't kill Nintendo. Sony is fine, and will continue producing consoles. Those who think otherwise either have no knowledge of just how much money sony has vested in the game market, or they are blatant sony haters who need to take an economics class.

Financially the PS3 has been a failure so far, but considering the financial might of Sony as a whole, there will surely be a PS4. This means that PS3 will not be the death of Sony nor should Sony give up.

Opalescent
So I guess MS and Nintendo should have quit after the Gamecube/Xbox?

Wait, Sony didn't plan on losing money?

So THAT must be why they put a console out on retail for $600 when it ran them $900 right?

They TOTALLY weren't expecting to lose money guys!

Funny that. If companies followed your philosophy, the PS3 would currently be the ONLY console on the market. ;)

Sorry fanboy, but Sony is doing tremendously well so far. PS3 is a huge success since it helped blu-ray win, and just wait till the release of Killzone 2. Also the Playstation family is beating the heck out of the Wii and 360. runbleduck

I don't know which is worse. The TC's opening statement or this reply. And the fact that you had to use SDF's "sony family" tactic just shows that PS3 on it's own, within it's generation, doesn't stand up to the competition.

Hell if you are going to go by "families", then the Nintendo Family is still kicking the PS family clear across the neighborhood :|

why? yes the PS3 is a disaster by playstation standards. its hemoraging money, its loosing 3rd party exclusives and its not dominating any market whatsoever. but the very idea of sony just droipping out, from a business point of view....is absolutely rediculous. its chalked up to experience...and sony move on. should a car company drop out because one of its cars has failed to deliver? should a movie studio stop making movies because one of them under performed in the box office? absolutely not. the thing about sony position is that it cant be fixed this gen (but they can and are taking steps to make sure it doesent happen next gen) but next gen alot fo the damage can be undone. the problems sony are facing are 1) they have priced themselves out of the market. the hardware is too expensive and there is a perfectly viable competitor that offers mostly the same games for significanly less money. it also plays those games up to the same standard in terms of visuals and performance in most cases. the PS3 was a great catalyst for blu-ray but its inclusion has come at a very high cost (and lest face it..a cost sony has been more than happy to pay. whatever they loose on the PS3 there going to make back on blu-ray licences). next gen, assuming they dont have another agenda, they can quite easily fix that problem by having a console thats not 800 dollars to produce at launch with a retail price of 600. this is the worst time to have a high cost console. yea it has a blu-ray player and more features than the human body but this is the worst time to have a device like that. ppl will be putting off luxury purchases like blu-ray and they will be tightening the belt. 2) lack of exclusive first party titles to show the console off. this kinda relates to point one, but to joe public, they see the PS3 and the 360..they see the 360 is cheaper and the 2 console have the same games mostly. naturally they choose the 360. its chepaer and it offer the same experience in those games. sony need a first party to persuade ppl to pick a playstation over an xbox or a wii. at the mo sonys first party isnt exactly very productive. sony are working on this though..this gen there greatly expanding their first party. we probably wont see the fruits of this too much this gen simply because it takes ages to make a game (2 years min) but sony will be better poised to provide more reasons to pick a playstation4 over an xbox 720 or wii2 right from the get go. i cant emphasise the importance of first party titles here. some say that without pokemon on the gameboy, nintendo would have sank with the N64 and that without mario, nintendo would lack any identity in the market. all we know is..its called a first party. 3) marketing. sony used to be the gods of marketing and brand promotion in the games market. but this gen there just dragging the heels on the marketing front. whats there is not very good and sends out mixed messages also. they need to get the finger out. 4) identity. what is the PS3? is it a blu-ray player with a games console attached? is it a games ocnsole with a blu-ray player attached? is it an all in one multimedia center? is it a toaster? what is it? the market has told sony on several occasions that it doesent want an all in one super device. its not interested. sony tried a similar thing with the PSTWO (the white one with the slot loading drive..only released in japan) and it was a complete disaster. plenty of hype for it before launch..some high inital sales and then...flatlined. hopefully sony get the message this gen...enough of the features..give the market what it bloody wants..not what sony want to give it. the marketing isnt helping either. im sure many of us have seen the famous gamestop page add (PS3..a blu-ray player that also plays games) and the TV adds also dont help (blu-ray games..what the hell are blu-ray games? rhetorical question). sony games division needs to tell its other divisions to take thier ideas for the PS4 and shove em where the sun dont shine. if its announced that the PS4 will again use blu-ray then that will be a very good sign. all of these can be fixed next gen and sony can again become a real force to be reckoned with. doing that is a far smarter move than just dropping out because of one blooper.

If Sony is going to die because of the PS3, I want them to atleast die fighting and not wave the white flag of surrender.one_on_one
I'm sure their shareholders will love that.

Among the millions of PS2 owners that haven't upgraded, I am sure that many of them are PS fanboys and will buy the PS3. Sony and major third parties are still giving the PS2 more support than it deserves in its old age. When the support stops many will buy a PS3. When XBox 360 was released, support for the original XBox was cut off. Original Xbox owners only had a choice of 360; not 360, Wii, or PS3. If half of the remaining PS2-only owners choose PS3 when support does finally stop, the PS3 will end up with a fairly decent user base. We've been in a three console market for three generations and I don't see that changing next generation. Someone will be first and someone will be last, but no console company is going to bow out. Nintendo and Microsoft didn't bail after last generation; why would Sony?

This thread is FLAMEBAIT!

That OP was the silliest, yet lamest attempt at a post Ive seen in a while. If you, opal, really meant that in your OP. then I will combat your logic with a truth, one that shall end this thread.

THE ORIGINAL XBOX (my fave) was a FAILURE, much more so than the PS3, yet because it lived long enough, we got a 360 because of it. Who's to say Sony won't do this with the PS4?

Sorry TC, you lose. Of course, you abandoned this thread a long while ago, but :

ThisTHREAD is DEAD, ZED.

What you don't realize is that Sony's primary focus, being a Japanese company, is Japan.

The PS3 and PSP are BOTH doing fairly well in Japan, especially the PSP.

Sony's gaming division isn't going anywhere. The worst case scenario would probably be the PS4 not being released in the United STates.

(This post isn't just to the TP).
