Didn't Sony announce DivX support before Microsoft?

http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3164648

On December 4, Xbox 360 will receive the much anticipated fall update for the dashboard. Microsoft has slowly released information about the update -- disclosing the addition of Xbox Originals to the marketplace, the controversial Friends of Friends feature and Family Timer functionality -- but 1UP has gone hands-on with the update to uncover all its virtual secrets.

Let's get the biggest news out of the way for the videophiles: Xbox 360 now supports MPEG-4, which means the box plays both DivX and XviD files without a hitch. 1UP tested almost every variation of the format possible, including high-definition content as high as 1080P. All the files ran flawlessly, though Microsoft told us there's no guarantee all formats will be compatible -- but we imagine most will.

Wow it seems MS really wants to come out on top of this console war. I just hope that if they do they won't become lazy afterwards.

It's better to stream all your media or you can use an external hard drive.

I don't know why info should be considered as failure. Having to play MPEG-4's instead of decent games maybe considered as failure though :P

What are you talking about? PS3 don't have DivX support, it was announced last month that it will get it in the future. The point is that Sony announced it first, while Microsoft delivered first.

big deal.

Its far more important for PS3 because of Home and the web browser should be able to stream Divx sites and be able to download without a pc.

its technically more of a big deal for the 360. we have a bunch of AAAs and stuff, and now we are getting the other stuff. the ps3 desperately needs good games, and not the average 8.0 games, i mean real high quality stuff that isnt multiplat. no one is going to buy a ps3 to play home and divx when a pc can do the same thing at a higher quality.

Sony never announced anything related to Divx.Divx files started appearing after a PS3 firmaware update. Divx came forward as said they were working on bringing the Divx codec to the PS3 and its developers.

There's been 3rd party software that does more than both for months. It may not be decoding on the cosole but it gets the job done.

Yeah, but MS also said that you can't stream xVid and DivX files and also a demo of the fall update on a 360 doesn't even have that supported. Maybe the next update will have streaming.

This thread fails because I have been playing MPEG-4s on my PS3 LONG before this thread was posted.

Didn't Sony announce DivX support before Microsoft?

The defense will be used that PSN is only a year old and M$ had a headstart....

ps3 development started only a few months later than xbox 360 development, remember that the ps3 was supposed to launch march 2006 but was delayed.

And the hardcore cows had actually believed that ff and mgs4 would be released q1 2007...

Hey Magical:D Didn't see you in a while. :P How you been?

Check your blog bro. I just posted in one of them today.... ;)

You did? :? Which one?
