Scott McCarthy, senior brand manager for Sony's MLB: The Show, has said that the platform holder is prioritising PS3-only in-game content over PS3 exclusive titles.

Asked by Scrawl FX if the company is still working with third parties to secure exclusives, he said:

"We work very closely with our 3rd parties publishers, not necessarily to lock down games exclusively, but to lock up exclusive parts of games. A good example is Batman: Arkham Asylum, where you could only play as the Joker on PlayStation 3.

"When you make a title exclusive, you limit its promotional power; we don't want to do that. We want games to be as big as possible - it's great for the industry.

"However," he added, "we want to make sure that you play it on the best system possible, so we like to take parts of games and make them exclusive to the PlayStation system."

It's a smart business tactic, but I can't help but feel that it's an annoying move for gamers in general.

Exclusive content is better than having exclusive 3th party games, which was standard in gaming prior to this gen, so I'm seeing this as something positive.

eh... both companies have been doing this... the only difference between sony and ms is that sony actually has 1st party studios which can dish out alot of quality games... this is just icing. thats why this its not a big deal if sony does it

^This. Of course this whole "timed exclusive" and exclusive DLC thing MS is doing is annoying, too.

Who couldn't have found that out by now when seeing all of the exclusive content PS3 versions of multiplats get. not fond of this trend but obviously it works, otherwise why would both companies be doing it.

Doesn't really matter in Sony's case anymore like it did in 2006 & 2007 considering that their 1st and 2nd party line-up are bringing the exclusives in huge numbers this year.

@ all of the just like MS comments- Not really. MS focuses more on buying timed exclusive rights to games, or buying timed exclusive dlc. Sony's focus is more on getting exclusive content in the game at no extra cost. Timed exclusives, in the long run, are meaningless, as the other guys get to play em too (and a lot of times, when it does come out for the ps3 later, it has extra content thrown in for free). Timed exclusive dlc is REALLY pointless, as you still have to pay for it, the other guys get it too, and MS cited it as a reason they had to increase the cost of Live every year. Extra content on the disc that the other guys either don't get, or have to pay extra for? Now that's a decent incentive.

So, Sony is doing what Microsoft has been doing for the past 4 years? All the more reason to support a system that has a strong 1st-party offering of developers and games.

So long as it's not DLC you have to pay for, I'm all ears. Free exclusive content is always a plus in my eyes.

I'm sure in the overall context, missing out on a tiny part of the game is not going to ruin your experience.

It depends on the content.

Since when have both versions of any given game gotten exclusive content? Soul Calibur IV allows you to download the other console version's exclusive character, Mortal Kombat 9 is superior on the PS3, Batman: Arkham Asylum is superior on the PS3, Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition is superior on the PS3, Portal 2 is superior on the PS3, Dead Space 2 is superior on the PS3, Unreal Tournament III is superior on the PS3... I can go on and on.

What do lemmings have? TIMED exclusive content for Call of Duty: Black Ops, Homefront, and Fallout: New Vegas that will be readily available to PS3 owners 2 weeks afterwards.

It hasn't happened and won't ever happen. Microsoft doesn't believe in longterm.

For example, where are their 1st party exclusives for 2011? Gears of War is developed and IP-owned by Epic Games, so that doesn't count.

Well, its a good deal.

With all this fussy fuss of 360 multiplats ending up being better/performing better, which favors 360 owners.... its only fair Sony answers back with Exclussive content.

Better Multiplat vs Exclussive conent. Your pick.

All of my aforementioned titles performed better on the PS3... and all had exclusive content. 360 owners don't like to admit when they have a lose-lose situation, huh?

That's what I was going to say. Well... close. I was going to say "Sony want's to be a bunch of D-bags."

Seriously though, why don't they just work on getting devs to make the ps3 version of any game just as good as it is on other platforms. That alone would be a big step.
