but 1 thing though, "Sony to copy Microsoft..." i don't think marketing your games/console is copying some one, stupid title

Agreed, it's about time that Sony did some advertising! And yeah, it's hardly copying! Playstation has been around alot longer than Xbox!

i don't think they need a lot of marketing for the ps3, but i think they need more than what they've been giving it. i remember seeing commercials for resistance 2.... i think there was another game but the fact that i can't remember which one proves that i didn't see it enough to remember which one. i know i've seen some commercials for just the ps3 itself and they have a couple games playing against buildings but i dont know if i would really count that as adverts for games.

They're terrible at marketing the PS3. The commercials don't even tell consumers what the hell it is half the time. Is it a game console or a media center? They have to make it clear for people.

That's a good start for sony to make a comeback they need to start with Killzone 2 make so many commercials people buy it just to shut them up then go on with God of War 3, Heavy Rain and so on they will see the money train riding again with good business decisions like this.

In Canada Sony markets ALOT. Back in October - December every commercial break featured atleast 1 Sony commercial. And quite often there would be like 2-3 Sony ads during commercial breaks, especially on Sport channels.

I've said this many times, their marketing department needs to be rehauled.

At this point though, I think it's too late to undo the damage. This isn't to say that the PS3 will never do well, but the Wii has already become the dominant console this generation and spending money to push past MS this gen is a waste of cash. What they need to do is establish an identity for the PS3 instead of bragging about how powerful it is. If they do that then everything will mostly work itself out. They aren't going to beat MS anytime soon but the least they could do is concentrate on a more focused ad campaign that isn't some offensive incoherent art nonsense.

I just don't know what went wrong for Sony in that department...i mean marketing the PS2 they made that look easy..... where as with the PS3...it's like they forgot how to market things anymore....even the videogame marketing is bad Say what you want about Microsoft...but there marketing has been great almost all gen. Western Marketing...Japanese marketing they suck :P

The problem with the PS3 is also it's greatest strength...It does too much. But it lacks any kind of real focus. Is it a next gen movie player or is it a next gen gaming platform? It's both but the name "Playstation" does not accurately describe the new machine. It isn't a toy and yet it has the name of one.

And the Spiderman font....W..T..F?

that's true. the R2 commercial doesn't even show the game. the LBP commercial makes it look like a typical kids' platformer. the MGS4 commercial looks like a cheap blockbuster trailer. "THE SYSTEM.. IS MINE!" and the PS3 commercials are like iPod commercials or something.

I remember seeing a little big planet ad on tv and it was terrible and made the game look really bad, you ended up not knowing what it was and at the end you get a weird voice saying "play with everythiiiing" If I did not know about the game that ad would have put me right off...

They need to do more marketing? I kinda get the point of why Sony didnt really market as much as other consoles. They kinda thought that they would put out a product with better hardware etc. and consumers would purchase it off of its history...sony that is. Well...what are they going to market? They need to just keep putting out games, gamers will purchase...problem solved. Its not like I need a commercial to know what games are good. Maybe for a casual, but I usually know what and when games are coming out. Again..if its a casual gamer....they will get a Wii regardless. SO save the money Sony.

People said the same thing about the PS2.

Sony is just terrible at marketting their system now. The original PS3 ads were sort of cool, but they problem was there really weren't enough games to advertise them for.

I think Sony needs to put nfl, nba, mlb, and nhl along with lots of other cool themes available for free on the system and advertise that along with all the great exclusives. And include all its features in its advertising like web browser, unscratchable ultra-high capacity bluray discs, the only system to come with rechargable controllers out of the box etc and lower the price to $299 and increase the harddrive size to 200gb. Then throw in a chordless headset and 10ft HDMI cable.

Good, maybe that'll help Sony push some units. And maybe they should start advertising single games more, rather than 4 or 5 games in one commercial alongside Blu Ray to sell the PS3.

Oh, and Sony should update their freaking avatar selection. Where is my LBP avatar? Or R2 avatar? Or Solid Snake avatar? Or GTA avatar? Heck, there are Crash Bandicoot and Spyro avatars... yet there isnt a Crash or Spyro game available for the PS3. (excluding the PS1 downloadable titles)

The first 5 million will buy it without advertising. But yeah, I want to see Killzone 2 ads on cereal boxes and stuff. I want KZ 2 ads to scream "KILLZOWNED!!!!" in my faces and in the faces of those around me, from the moment I wake up until the moment I go to sleep.

Haha, good point. But I do think they should advertise KZ 2 in cinemas actually. Tons of people are guaranteed to see it and it would look amazing on one of those huge cinema screens.

There's a difference between advertising a lot and advertising a lot of terrible ads. If Sony is going to copy the amount of ads Microsoft are doing, then it better be at least as good because these Sony ads have been not so good in selling their products. If Sony had to lay off some workers, I hope it's their advertising department.

This article makes sense, but they seem to think that Sony not resting on their laurels and actually promoting and advertising the PS3 = "copying MS".

It's funny though, you do see the Xbox 360 logo on all kinds of things... yogurt, cereal, waffles, Pepsi products, etc. The PS logo? You'll never see it in a grocery store. Microsoft has done a great job promoting the 360.

Personally, I like the Spiderman font and think it suits the console nicely. Also, I think SOny is just NOW starting to advertise properly with those ads that show LBP, Resistance 2 and Dark Knight projected on a number of people/trucks/etc. They need to keep that up to promote the console, and also pump out ads for their heavy hitters like Killzone 2.

Gears and Halo both had major ad campaigns. On the other hand, Killzone 2 comes out in a month and I haven't seen one single commercial or print ad.

I love one of the adds that google sponors the wii after the article is done lmao. Sony does need to improve but in this bad emonic i dont think much about it. what they really need to do is lower the price of ps3 and the y get more sells plan as that.

EXACTLY. They need to be pushing Killzone 2 in the theaters as Floppy Jim said earlier.It would look freaking amazing on a big screen just like Gears and Halo 3 did.....

...and said campaign should have begun as soon as the clock struck new year's. if they market this game as litle as they did Resistance 2 and Little Big Planet, I'll assume Sony doesn't care to really compete this generation; only stay afloat long enough to make it to nextGen.

This should have been done from the beginning. With success comes arrogance for some. With the success of the PS1 and PS2, Sony must have felt that they could moved the same units off of brand name alone. Which failed. Most parents that do not mind paying PS3 prices don't because they do not know what the machine can do.
