Sony is reaching out to Mom, Dad and the kids in a bid to widen the appeal of its PlayStation 3.

Facing stiff competition from Nintendo's family-friendly Wii, Sony will be heavily campaigning around the upcoming release of several all-ages games, most notably karaoke title SingStar and community building title LittleBigPlanet, streeting this fall and early 2008, respectively. Both are exclusive to the PlayStation platform, with earlier SingStar titles already available for the PS2.

Also, Sony is preparing to hype the PS3 as the most comprehensive Blu-ray Disc player available on the market. Currently, PS3 is the only device that features a Web-enabled Blu-ray player, although no studio has released a Blu-ray title boasting Web-based content.

"Our goal is to definitely widen our target base and not be so niche," said Kim Nguyen, PS3 manager. "We are not all about shoot 'em-up bloody games. There are friendly games."

She added, "This is high-def entertainment messaging, where we have our exclusive software titles, and we are delivering a very powerful machine. On the movie side, you have beautiful movies that you can watch on the PS3. We are going for that larger audience."

During the U.S. PS3 bow last fall, Sony mainly emphasi/zed the product's superior gaming technology. Nintendo instead talked up the Wii's ease of use. Wii ads featured various family members enjoying the system's unique wireless controllers.

With PS3's SingStar, players sing popular songs via a microphone attachment and are scored based on their similarity to the track's original performer. On LittleBigPlanet, players create their own customized, virtual world and can collaborate with other PS3 users.

Nguyen said a TV, print and online blitz will push these various talking points during the back half of the year, leading toward the fourth quarter. She declined to give a specific launch date.

Wii has sold 5.84 million systems worldwide through March, Nintendo officials said last month. Launched near the same time last year, PS3 has sold 3 million units worldwide, Sony confirmed.

Michael Pachter, an analyst at Wedbush Morgan Securities, thinks marketing should boost PS3. He agrees that PS3 can improve upon how it singles out its Blu-ray functionality.

"What they want to do is position the consumer to start wanting the PS3 in time for Christmas," said Pachter, figuring advertising might start as early as June. Plus, Sony "needs to educate consumers on why they need a Blu-ray player."

Nguyen said PS3 supply has increased at retail and noted that between February and March of this year, PS3 was the only next-generation console to show a sales gain.

"The Wii was down 22%, and the Xbox 360 was down 12%, and we were up 2%," said Nguyen, citing U.S. statistics from NPD Funworld.

However, PS3 still lagged in March sales, moving 130,000 units, compared to Wii's 260,000 units sold and Xbox 360's 200,000 units sold.

"The timing is definitely right [for renewed PS3 promotion], as the manufacturing issues have been ironed out," Nguyen said. "Retailers are getting an influx of supply, so it makes sense to ramp up marketing to coincide with that."

Through this summer, PlayStation will continue to sponsor various events designed to spread the word about PS3. In mid-March through May 5, the PlayStation AM JAM tour, starring various professional skate boarders, spread across eight U.S. cities.

PlayStation Patrol trucks, created specifically last year for people to sample the PS3, continue to tour the U.S through the year.

Also, Sony has partnered with the San Francisco Giants to promote the baseball PS3 title MLB '07 The Show. Prior to Giants taking turns at bat, clips of the videogame will run on the team's new high-definition scoreboard.

And yet it doesn't output 720p.

I think the Sony/PS has always had more of a casual type image. (Hardcore Price right now that's for sure). But it's the only console I think that serves both the casual and hardcore market the best. It seems like Wii = Casuals, 360 = Hardcores, and PS3 = mixed

Finally Sony figures out that they need adds that actually make sense.  This should help them out some.

another fanboy..... same could be said about alll the so called kiddie nintendo games.... ask yourself this: why is mario considered kiddie by some? the art style maybe? cuz the gameplay is somewhat challenging.... the story? most mario games dont have a real story....

why would little big planet considered kiddy? the artstyle? the gameplay? looks like a platformer... like mario... the story? will it have a mature themed story? i dont think so....

sony fanboys make me sad

I was just correcting him, sheesh.  Every five seconds i get called a fanboy in here,  whether it be a sheep, hermit, or cow.

Nintendo never really pointed out who they're aiming at until this gen, when they said they're aiming to get non-gamers into gaming.

they've been successful with the adults .. if they try too hard to get the families, they might just fail massively

I see no harm in Sony trying to make the PS3 a little more family/kid friendly. It'll never be as appealing to families as the Wii, though.

The harm is to Sony's image as copycat, again....

Whatever advocate becomes successful, they always manage to find a way to copy and says it was THEIR original intended thought/idea to begin with.

I don't need a Blu-Ray player. When I bought my HDTV in 2005 I bought a good LG DVD player that upscales. It looks fantastic on my television.

Now someone please tell me why I NEED a Blu-Ray player. Go on, convince me. I'm all ears.

They should make the PS3 image more like the...PS2.

The middle of the road console. Little bit of everything for everyone. Problem is that for some reason they wanted to "Out-PC" XBOX and realized that was a dumb move. You got 360 trying to copy the PS3 and the PS3 trying to copy the XBOX. Two dummies trying to out-dumb each other. Good grief.

KEEP IT SIMPLE! Thats why the PS2 sold huge. Thats why the Wii is selling huge.

Upscaled DVD's are not HD. Sticking feathers up your butt does not make you a chicken.

Once I started downloading trailers in HD on my 360 I noticed that those trailers looked better than my DVD's and they looked better than the films did in theatre. Thats when I decided that I wanted HD movies and went with Blu-ray. I won't replace my DVD's but I want all the new movies to look as good as possible.

sony used dvd for games then followed nintendo

first they had a deal then nintendo stab them  in back

Nintendo approached Sony and together they struck a deal to develop the SNES-CD (a cd based add on for the Super Nintendo). The reason why Nintendo approached Sony in particular was because Ken Kutaragi (the founding father of the Playstation) had previously sold a Sony based sound chip that improved the sound quality of the Super Nintendo.

Sometime in 1988 Sony began working on the prototype of the SNES-CD also called, "Playstation". This new addon was to be attached at the bottom of the SNES. The top would allow for catridges to be loaded and the add-on for CD's to be inserted. Along the lines of the contract agreement, Sony would earn the royalty for games released in the CD format. As confirmed before, Nintendo earned its profits from royalties of games released on their consoles.

When Nintendo had found out Sony's intentions it decided to get into agreement with Philips to build it a CD add on drive. Sony was not infomed of Nintendo's deal with Philips. This led confusion and a public dispute between Sony and Nintendo at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 1991,Sony announced the deal that it had with Nintendo

also Nintendo was very public about its skepticism toward using CDs and DVDs to store games, citing longer load times and durability issues. It was widely speculated that the company was even more concerned with piracy, given its substantial reliance on licensing and exclusive titles for its revenue

They look great. That's all I care about. Do you get some sort of special satisfaction knowing that you have actual HD movies? Is it because you can brag to your friends about it or something?

I have high-def digital cable, so I know what HD looks like. And believe me, my upscaled DVD player makes DVDs look fantastic at a fraction of the cost.

I'm a huge movie geek. I love movies more then I love gaming. So yes HD films are a big deal to me. I want to know that I am getting the most out of my HDTV. I don't need to brag about it, you asked someone to tell you why you would want Blu-ray so I responded.

You can like whatever you want but don't trick yourself into thinking upscaled DVD's look as good as HD DVD's.
