Sony pushes for 90FPS as Standard for VR

Sony deems a stable 60fps as a Minimum for VR gaming, but is pushing for 90fps to be the Standard for play as even a stable 60FPS can cause users discomfort while using VR.

These findings are very similar to the findings of Oculus and HTC/Valve, since both the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive headsets use displays which run at 90Hz, though with such a high refresh rate it can be argued that the PS4 will likely be unable to run many visually demanding games while using VR headsets, especially given how few 1080p 60FPS games that are currently available.

How is this going to be possible with the weak sauce hardware in the PS4?

It will probably only work on some specific "VR games" with very undemanding graphics. However, similar to the VR headsets on PC "first-party" VR-specific titles are not where it's at. The exciting thing is 3rd-party modding that allows you to use VR in traditional games that do not support VR by default. For example, VR has been made to work in games like Skyrim, GTA5, Battlefront, or any other first-person shooter for that matter. I don't think PSVR will be able to provide compatibility for those games officially, and since PS is a closed platform that also means there won't be any modding that enables it.

They can't even maintain a good 30 FPS on their non-VR games. This is basically saying the resolution is going to match the PS2's.

Thing is going to fail on PS4. Maybe they are just releasing the stuff pre-maturely and will effectively support it from the get go with the PS5.

90 fps with games graphically similar to the Virtual Boy.

Though i'd imagine the PSVR would be capable of more than 1 colour, maybe.

Note: Oculus will be doing 90hz /fps @ 2160x1200 (across 2 screens)

So yea, its a bit more than 60fps @ 1080p :D

High resolution and FPS but ugly graphics? Or poor resolution with average graphics at a high FPS? What will they sacrifice to produce their sub-par product?

They should focus on keeping a steady 60 fps on upcoming games before trying to boost 90fps on the psvr. I imagine the resolution and graphics are going to take a pretty big hit if the stick to this.

After seeing requirements of Return to Dinosaurs Island VR Demo from Crytek, I'm still wondering how will they run Eve Valkyrie on Morpheus/PS4?

Especially when you consider the fact that they are "aiming to run games at 90fps", but their standard OK-ish looking games can't even maintain constant 30fps.

Which is why they won't be regular games. People on this thread are not very bright, any current console can do 1080p >200FPS if they wanted (at least internally, obviously HDMI would have a problem with that), but the developers have to be realistic about how much they will be rendering. They can probably do PS3 level graphics at 1080/90, maybe a tad higher on the textures.

So 1080p120, or at worse 1080p90. It's safe, and fair, to expect VR games to look worse than the games we are used to play on the console.

Just a silly question: Is it possible for the PS VR's hardware to help the console reaching those standards? Could it has it's own processor, memory upgrade, etc?

How is it possible ? Simple. It's not for ps4. They just making it future proof. That's how. By being Sony VR it doesn't mean it will be ps4 exclusive.

of course it could but I doubt that it will, getting these numbers won't be that hard if you use lower poly and lower shader models.

A game from last gen will easly go to 1080p and 90fps and those models are not that bad looking at all. Actually most games from last gen need something closer to a ps4 to run at decent settings.

Sure, maybe even slightly better looking than last gen games. We already have some great looking games PS4 at 1080p60 like MGS5, Advanced Warfare and MKX, so i'm sure that 90fps will not translate in bad looking games.

Sony could improve PS4's specs with the VR peripheral, though. It would make sense.

According to some hands on articles, yes Morpheus seems to have extra hardware to support PS4's hardware for VR games. Don't know how much powerful that hardware will be though, because of size of the headset.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. It will be on PS4 for some games, but they might move it on to the PS5 and maybe even offer native PC drivers.

They'll cheat and use interpolation and then claim everything runs at 90 fps. Just because each frame is repeated multiple times (2 or 3 at least) doesn't mean it's not displaying 90 per second.
