Playstation EyeToy came way before Kinect, and sold over 10 million units worldwide. Thing is, Sony has strong third party support, exclusives, and good first party franchises. Whether they will be knocked out by another company, I don't know, but they do make and house some great games and I would be really disappointed to see them go like Sega.

The problem is that Sony didn't marketed it well while MS put half a billion dollars behind Kinect's marketing.

Forget that they've been making top shelf quality, high selling games for decades. Forget that they typically set the standard by which others (try to) follow. Forget that they are quick to realize their weaknesses and assess them. Forget that they'veread the market better than the other giants in recent years.

Yeah, I dont think the gaming division is going anywhere. Even if Sony does have to bow out of the console race (doubtful), they still have too many strong studios under their belt to just bail altogether.

Microsoft didnt "come up with the cool idea" of Kinect. 3DIR cameras were not invented by MS.

Infact, Kinect itself wasnt even invented by MS. Kinect was an invention by a company called 3DV systems which was shown off at CES 2009 (and it wasnt tied to a specific console yet). Microsoft saw their shiny toy at ces, they acquired 3DV systems for $30 Million dollars, slapped their logo on it and redemoed it at E3 as "project natal".

Heres another interesting tidbit....3DV systems, the company that made kinect (which was bought by MS) actually went to BOTH Nintendo and Sony first with the idea and were rejected by by both of them.

Actually I think microsoft will die by nintendo in the future rather than sony:

Microsoft went for casuals.
A lot of sales.
No quality.

I think that will hurt them in the next generation. Kinect sold en masse and has been very bad marketing because it doesn't work well and only has 2 or maybe 3 quality titles for it. The Wii had way more and Sony doesn't provide much for the casual gamer. I don't think casuals were even considering the Move and it really depends on their next generation approach what their outcome will be.

I suppose from Nintendo's perspective, it would be poetic justice.

That aside, I don't think Nintendo had a hand in Sonys problems. I think it was down to the monumental arrogance that led to this hardware design and underestimating their opponants this gen. But even this is only a referance to the Playstation divisions losses this gen.

The major issues with Sony are company wide and are in areas Nintendo have nothing to do with. I'd be sad if anything happened to Sony, I like their products (not refering to their gaming division with this). They are trust worthy and are of high quality.

Thing is: Sony ain't dying.

Ha, really. I think Sonys gaming division will be fine for the foreseeable future, but a lot of people are really trying to understate the seriousness of the situation here. I know SW has a knack for hyperbole and everything is always doomed... DOOMED. But Sony is in a bad position right now, no denying it.

You guys are missing the point. The Games division can do as well as it wants but it is part of a larger failing company. 6.5 billion loss in one year. Its the first loss of its kind in 65 years for this company because of infighting with the different divisions and a refusal to change etc. Bottom line if you work at a company, your fate is tied to the fate of that company. Im sure if you look at Huge companies that folded over the years, they might of had a profitable, "Marketing division" or maybe their "Accounting division" was top noch...but if the company itself went out of business, what did all of that noteworthy praise about a particular division matter??? Were the remainder of that marketing division gonna hang around and start a subsidiary, or just go find work in another firm? I am by no means joining the "Sony is Doomed" parade, but pointing out that a particular division in a failing company is doing well and "making games" is pretty stupid.

And as a footnote, those "exclusives " you keep bragging about are not selling. They are going to become a drag on the bottom line of a company that is bleeding money. They are spending X amount of millions to create these "mediocre" to "good" exclusives, and they are not selling because they do not market the game or the game just has no mass market appeal. I dont see this model carrying forward for the PS4. (If there is one)
