Poll Sony, Xbox, or Nintendo - who has the most polish in their first party games? (87 votes)

Sony 36%
Xbox 9%
Nintendo 55%

I think Sony does. Games like God of War, Horizon, Last of Us, etc all look fantastic. While I don't have an Xbox, I read they've had quality issues with games like Sea of Thieves. Nintendo usually does a good job, although I do remember Breath of the Wild having frame rate/stutter issues. But when I buy a Sony game, I can count on it looking and playing great.

How about you, SW? Who has the most polish in their first party games out of the big three console makers?

People will be biased, and likely don't own various platforms.

Sony has the most polish. High quality AAA games pushing graphics to new heights. Awesome gameplay, stories, voice acting etc.

Microsoft is somewhere in the middle. For every Gears of War 4 which is pretty good, they have shovelware like Recore.

Nintendo is the worst out of the 3. They don’t push anything. Nintendo doesn’t even use textures in their games. It’s hard to mess up a games graphics when they are simplistic and cartoony. They are still making N64 games with a cartoon coat of paint.

They should not be getting praise. They also have terrible online, bad stories, bad voice acting and simplistic gameplay and often gimmicks that make there games worse to control.

Without a doubt, Nintendo is the only out of the big 3 who always have outstanding polish 1st party games, no more/less. Sony comes second place as they too polish their 1st party games but Nintendo still outshines Sony but still, I like'em both and if I must pick 1, it's Nintendo who get's my vote.

I guess you haven't played Nintendo since the N64 days.

overall nintendo. i dont have an issue with buying their games day one as i know they are, for the most part, in good shape at launch. they do expansion packs for some of their games now but the base games for those are not exactly lacking either (though i dont get their release strategy for Splatoon and arms.....very few maps with free ones added later. odd). nintendo are not perfect. BOTW has performance issues that were never sorted on the wiiu (i hear they are mostly sorted on the switch) and xenoblade 2 is not as smooth running as xenoblade X (though overall it was still released in good shape).

probably the one area that would let them down on the polish front is online. the online experience is not great from what i hear (i dont use it personally).

Sony: generally solid at launch but more dugs certainly get through. at lest they did on the PS3. they can also look very polished but the gameplay can be anything but. i dont have a PS4 so i dont know if things have improved. are there big day 1 patches for many of their games?

they do have the record for worst out of the box experience for me in a game though: GT6. if i put my GT6 disc into a new PS3 it will take 8 hours to patch before i can play it. 8 FRICKIN HOURS. im not exaggerating either. i had to disable the auto shutdown setting on the PS3 because it would time out. some of those patches are extra stuff yes but 8 hours.....thats insane (this is on a 100Mb/s connection that is working just fine). i dont want to know what horror state that was released in.

I cant comment on MS. i hear the master chief collection was a dumpster fire at launch but i never played it.

I don't know. But Nintendo makes better games than Sony and especially Microsoft. They're just fun. Sony is too obsessed with expensive presentation and cinematic storytelling now.

@undefined: ‘I read they've had quality issues with games like Sea of Thieves’

Wrong. While there were minor bugs just about any online game faces upon launch, the game was playable for most since day one.

@sakaiXx ‘Voted for Sony for obvious graphical reasons. Their level of polish is just stunning’

‘Graphical’? That’s not what polish means. It means overall quality which sony also has issues with on occasion. Driveclub was broken on launch and took about a year to fix.

First party wise though, I’d have to go Nintendo for overall polish. You’d be hard pressed to find glaring issues with their first party titles. Although speedrunners often find and exploit hacks the average person wouldn’t find. Nintendo also isn’t as resource heavy as most so polish is easier to control. I picked MS second as well, I don’t buy playstations so I can’t judge them properly. Forza games launch dripping with polish.

Definitely Nintendo. Sony produces the largest volume of graphically striking games. But that's not the same thing at all as overall polish, to my mind. Not to snub awesome games like HZD which run rock solid and are fun to play

it's a really hard choice between Sony and Nintendo for different reasons. Both are excellent for polish in different ways.

Nintendo has fantastic polish for fan friendly nostalgic games

and

Sony has unmatched polish for AAA graphically impressive blockbuster games

I chose Sony because I think it's a bit more difficult to have bar setting graphically impressive games that are also among the most polished games on the market but It could go either way really.

Yea, I agree with you. Sony games are graphically way more intensive than Nintendo's. Not sure how Nintendo is getting so much credit here.

If talking polish day 1, clearly Nintendo hands down. I don't think I've played a botched game from them.

With Xbox, I give them edge of PlayStation cause even if a game isn't 100% golden day 1, they will remaster that game for free like they did Master Chief Collection and Recore. I don't know what you read about Sea of Thieves but that game was polished, people just didn't like lack of content. State of Decay 2 is the one with some jank. While Forza Horizon 4 had more polish than God of War and Spider-Man combined.

Not sure if every exclusive I played was Sony's, but Knack was wrankity when I played it, Until Dawn wasn't polished at all, Bloodborne was really choppy, The Last Guardian had issues, and Gravity Rush had issues as well.

Its nintendo they seem to make sure all there works are quality most of the time. Sony and MS seem to not care for there smaller studios works. They have let out stinkers. Sony has the polish when it comes to there big studios.

Zelda Link in the Wild. This game more a exception. Okay the other game called Arm is also unique. Let just say they release SOME complete new game. But, it easy to agree because it true. Smash Bro is just wiiu game. I not even counting re release game like Mario Car 8 or Donkey Kong Tropical Breeze. Game like Splattoon 2 is just like Call of Duty.

What make matter worse is nintendo fanboy jump to it defense and make me laugh when nintendo fanboy return is to complain about Sony “movie game” which have nothing to do with a good comparison or analogy.

Summing it up like that is a pretty superficial and ignorant way of looking at it. Nintendo is a mascot-driven company, and that's why you see their biggest mascots in the spotlight, because mascots are their niche. It's not just a new Mario game that gets rehashed - just looking at the main 3D games (64, Sunshine, Galaxy 1&2, 3D World, Odyssey) - they are all very different from one another that offer drastically different gameplay elements. It's not just the same old Mario game every single time that you incline. I'm not going to begin to count how many franchises Mario has alone, but I'm pretty sure there's more franchises owned by Mario than what I can count with my own ten fingers. So yeah, "it's just another Mario game," but which of the many different types of Mario games are you referring to that is all samey?

Nintendo is definitely not perfect, and yeah some games feel rehashed (Mario Party, for example) but to say Nintendo's catalog entirely is a bunch of rehashes is shortsighted.

You know what's the funniest thing about that statement? Literally every fanboy defends their consoles of choice. Cows tend to be the funniest ones when they get so cocky, imo.

Nintendo and Sony are fairly even at this point, with Microsoft just a bit behind due to how they treat games they're not sure about. I voted for Nintendo though because... well, BotW and Smash Ultimate.

CoD and FiFA and Madden is their respective company flagship titles like Nintendo Mascot titles that gets releases every single damn year. Its very funny to me when Nintendo fans tried to defend yearly releases of their games even though its essentially the same experience as last year, just like FIFA, CoD, and others.

I will give prop that nintendo do something else sometimes but, its Nintendo, wont be long till they rehashes something and fans called it amazing for "staying true to its roots". Its Its basic the same thing you get the past 30 years.

Sony has the budget, but Nintendo definitely has more polished games. Heck, I still play BOTW from time to time cos' it's just so engaging. Spiderman on the other hand is now collecting dust.

I can judge based on what I think is important as overall polish. I judged on graphic cause I think all 3 nailed on gameplay part and all console publisher have unique thing that they do best. Sony does well on one part, nintendo dnintendo does well on casuals, xbox does well on their market so I judged based on what I think differentiate best.

Anyhow gameplay wise I will never go to a nintendo game. Its another mario, its another pokemon, is another nintendo something aka its another nintendo recycled content. overrated, overhyped, lazy cash grab.

Blanket statements like these make me realize the people that say these things don't actually play Nintendo games to know better.

To me, Nintendo is just like Activision or EA sport title. Yearly releases of Pokemon is equal to yearly releases of CoD and FIFA in my eye. No difference at all, all reharshed content from way back with a coat of new engine. All equally crap.

Pokemon isn't developed by Nintendo.

Yeah and nintendo dont own parts of the IP.

Yeah and nintendo dont own parts of the IP.

You're trying to say that them owning a third of the IP means that they have complete creative control of the IP, eve though they literally helped to establish an entire company to independently manage it?

Nevertheless, its a nintendo IP that released yearly same as from other company that does the same. Rehashed content every year, just like the others

Uh-huh. This is very strawman. That said, you're saying that because of this one almost annual IP, the entire company is just another EA no matter what else happens? Just one IP is all it takes? Just want to be clear here.
