Ok, so if the Cell Processor is supposed to be so great.... why is it that NONE of Sony's PC's or Laptops on their own home shopping page even offer it up? I was just really amazed to see that NONE of their laptops, etc. had the "cell" in it given how much they have been touting this as the second coming of Christ for the better part of three years.Dlacy13g
Only a rugged built machine such as the PS3 can harness such immense power....
Because people that normally buy laptops could care less about linux and I am very sure the Cell wouldn't work with windows. People want windows and remember that the cell is a RISC bassed processor while the AMD and Intel are X86 based.

Fanboy spoted!:P. Sony co-op developed Cell with IBM and Toshiba. Sony itself was never a chip maker and won't be. Ibm instead is going to use Cell for servers and mainframes computers. Also check gamespot for that article of a scientist who managed to connect 8 PS3s and to do his work, that previusly he needed a supercomputer(so 4 Cells = something powerful at least as a mainframe).

I thought IBM was using Intel xenon processors for servers and mainframes?

Deathbourn
Good point, they need X86, but what if mobos and other hardware starts to support it, windows won't? they will, even Apple now supports Intel architecture!(something that a year before the announcement, looked like impossible to happen)....
This has got to be a joke? You know:
a) its not designed for computer's
b) its not an industry standard which it would have to be to be a computer part
c) sony would also need to provide motherboards for them
d) sony doesnt make computer parts
e) i think sony already sold cell to someone (toshiba?)
f) this thread makes no sence
g) you fail
h) thats all that i can think about

No they have in their plans for 08 to use it, specially for MMORPGs servers: http://www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/21433.wss

They are also selling or preparing Cell equipped servers and making a supercomputer based on G5s and Cells.
The Cell for the ps3 was never really intended for home PCs. They are using them for other electronics and applications though.

The Cell was made for curing cancer, massive floating point calculations, stringing together to form a super computer, possibly challenging Blue for Chess supremecy and everything else except playing games.

This is SW, you can fail at anything. Oh, and you fail because you use that dorky font.

Depends on the way you ask. Eg: This time was a more like an angressive question, that TC didn't want answer, just to find a way to attack on cows.

nah he does that also. try warhawk, HS, R&C:FTOD and then decide if it plays games or not.

answer: CELL is Great for processing multimedia code but is poor for the general purpose processing which is important in PCs & Laptops. CELL also uses a lot of juice which isnt ideal for laptops & in benchmarks the performance of CELLjust isnt good enough- standard desktop & mobile CPUs r better for running linux etc

Yea, that will take some time, but don't forget befroe 2002 we were saying the same for HD games, but look now at games. All big games are HD rdy games(even Halo 3 is -640p but remains HD!). For the specific numbers, on movies fun(specially those with Blu-Ray and HD-Dvd) are going to provide them a much better, whole-new experience(true HD + able to have all those videos on-screen simutaniulsy with crystal-clear picture) . For gamers, as I said it will take some time, but time will come, when we will have 4D gfx, physics, animations, HDR and HD all together with detailed textures, then Cell is NEEDED or for sure, frames per seconds levels to 'll be to low, to consider playable.

Look my post with the links in front page, read them and you will see, Cell didn't flopped.
